My F1 rFactor career
My F1 rFactor career
INTRODUCTION
I joined the fun with many others and decided to go on with my own career. This starts from 1988 season, and I'm driving an Osella. I don't use my real name here, instead name Eros Sanguinetti, Italian driver. That suits well with the ambitions to start with Italian team.
All tracks of 1988 are ready with an exception of Imola and Suzuka. I will use 1994 version of Imola and late 1990s version of Suzuka if they are not available at the time. With Imola it's likely since it's second round of the season.
1988 had 31 cars, one dropped out in pre-qualifying and four in qualifying. With the rFactor system, I will use practice as a pre-qualifying, but only for the teams that participated it, at least during the first half of the season which concludes after British GP. The teams in pre-qualifying are EuroBrun (2 cars), Rial, Coloni and Dallara with one car each. So slowest of these five will not take part in qualifying nor race.
There is some bug which usually makes many drivers to drive more laps than allowed in qualifying. As it's mostly out of my control, 26 fastest drivers will race. However, those with too many laps will start from the back of the grid.

Round 1 - Brazil
In the practice/pre-qualifying, Andrea de Cesaris was not able to make the track, so it was quickly clear who would drop out. No major drama, I was around 26th but didn't speed up really with softer tyre and I was mostly using heavy fuel load.
Surprisingly, qualifying took two major casualties. Alain Prost was just starting his fast lap when Luis Perez Sala chopped ahead of him, coming from the pit lane. The two touched, Prost flew into the wall and damage was done, DNQ for the Frenchman. The manoeuvre was deemed dangerous and Sala was excluded from the race too. Also it was bad day for Thierry Boutsen. The crash happened just behind me, as I left the pits I went ahead of Tyrrell driver (didn't spot whether it was Palmer or Bailey) and Boutsen was behind him. He decided to take working lane in the pits and smacked into safety car waiting at the pit exit! Again, too much damage and the Belgian was out. So that left only one spot for other DNQs and it was to be Bernd Schneider.
Ayrton Senna took the pole with two Williamses behind him, Mansell ahead. Alboreto, Nannini and Piquet rounded out top 6. I was 23rd, ahead of Martini, Dalmas and Ghinzani in the grid. No one was sent to back of the grid this time.
At the start, I took it badly and dropped down to 25th into the first corner. Johansson spun and I had to swerve a little to avoid him. Dalmas went past me so I had only Johansson behind at that point. I climbed up few spots on the first lap to 21st, mostly thanks to turbo engine which was obviously big help at the longest straight. But then a series of mistakes brought me back to last. Larrauri was first to retire and I ran 25th for most of the time. I was lapped already on lap 10 but from then on I kept quite a good pace. I seemed to perform better when I had cars around me and I was not circling around alone. Berger and Gugelmin had slight altercation in a left-hander behind the pits and they both had to pit. I continued running until I went wide and when returning to the track Derek Warwick hit my car. It was the end of the race for both drivers.
Senna won the race for the delighted fans. Alboreto took 2nd and Nakajima sensational 3rd ahead of his team-mate Piquet. Berger and Gugelmin recovered to take final points.

Re: My F1 rFactor career
I'll be interested to keep reading this, although there is no 1989 mod for rFactor yet. Seems to be taking a long time.
I can't drive the 1988 mod, mostly because I have to use keys and it's impossible with the '88 mod.

Round 2 - San Marino
As mentioned earlier, 1994 version of the circuit is used as there is not 1988 version available. Different contributors but the layout has been the same.
I couldn't get grips with the circuit at all. First sector was fine, but Aqua Minerale and Variante Alta chicanes...just horrible. I ended up qualifying in 29th, only beating Alex Caffi. So DNQ for me. Schneider and Dalmas also failed to qualify.
I got some major air in one of my qualifying laps.

Top three of the qualifying was the same as in Brazil: Senna, Mansell, Patrese. Gugelmin was fourth, Piquet fifth and Capelli sixth. Berger, Prost, Tarquini and Cheever were sent to the back of the grid.
Since it's not possible to put driver out, I started the race, put one litre of fuel and went on. I ran out of fuel in the uphill after Tosa and car stopped at Aqua Minerale.
Prost and Berger had incident in the back of the field and they both had to pit. Also pitting were Ghinzani and Alliot. The first real retirement of the race was Warwick on lap 6.
There was lots of incidents throughout the race. Patrese dropped down around 10th lap, while few drivers like Nelson Piquet, Ivan Capelli and Stefan Johansson had to make multiple pit stops.
Prost drover brilliant race after his first-lap pit stop and he was in the points around half-distance. This was not enough for him and he grabbed 2nd place on lap 39, but couldn't catch Senna in the lead. So it was McLaren 1-2. Joining them on the podium was surprisingly Jonathan Palmer, after Alboreto and Nakajima collided just five laps from home. For the delight of Minardi, their driver Martini took the final point.
Mansell retired again with engine problem. Rene Arnoux was only one who crashed on his own, but Mauricio Gugelmin had a huge accident following a brake failure.

Wasn´t it allowed in Rfactor to Ban AI drivers?? At least I can do it in my Rfactor... I say it because of the 16 driver grids.

Round 3 - Monaco
My game crashed very late in the race. I had very rejectful race, with a total of 9 pit stops for repairs. However, the attrition was very high and I was 7th at that time with five laps to go. I would have moved just into points due to Sala's retirement.
A lot of crashes, about everyone had to pit at some point of the race.
I have no will to do all again. I had race order in my mind though, it was this:
1. Bailey
2. Alliot
3. Senna
4. Patrese - 1 lap (DNF)
5. Palmer - 1 lap
6. Sala - 7 laps (DNF)
7. Sanguinetti -7 laps
8. Cheever -8 laps (DNF)
DNF Gugelmin (59), Arnoux (57), Warwick (57), de Cesaris (57), Capelli (40), Johansson (39), Modena (39), Martini (38), Tarquini (37), Mansell (36), Larrauri (33), Alboreto (30), Boutsen (28), Prost (23), Streiff (21), Berger (11), Piquet (9), Nakajima (5)
Sala, Capelli, Tarquini, Alboreto, Boutsen, Streiff, Berger and Piquet due to accidents.
In the qualifying I got very good lap and was 12th fastest. But with four drivers taking too many laps, I ended up in 8th of the grid. I kept my place until first issue which was head-on collision with Senna who was trying U-turn at Massenet. Both of us damaged front wings as a result.
The rest of my pit stops due to these
2 Hit kerb at Swimming pool and hit wall
3 Too fast into Massenet, spun into inside wall
4 Hit Martini at Swimming pool
5 Lost control at Swimming pool, slid into wall
6 Ran little bit wide at tunnel and touched wall
7 Missed braking spot at Tabac
8 Spin in Ste Devote
9 Too fast into Massenet, understeer into outside wall

Round 4 - Mexico
Practice quite normal, I was 22nd, actually in a group of drivers who were pre-qualifying. de Cesaris was slowest again and got dumped from the qualifying itself. Bailey didn't drive in practice at all due to mechanical issues.
Qualifying claimed one big victim again. This time it was Gerhard Berger, whose engine failed just after leaving the pits. Got my car in at the lower end of the grid, 20th position. Three drivers were ordered to the back of the grid this time: Cheever, Johansson and Boutsen.
Grid:
Senna - Prost
Mansell - Alboreto
Nannini - Bailey
Capelli - Piquet
Gugelmin - Patrese
Nakajima - Palmer
Arnoux - Warwick
Streiff - Sala
Larrauri - Modena
Tarquini - Sanguinetti
Alliot - Martini
Caffi - Cheever
Johansson - Boutsen
DNQ: Ghinzani, Dalmas, Schneider, Berger
This time I got a good start and I was 17th at the first corner. However I had to give room for Tarquini and Cheever during the first lap. Caffi collided with Johansson and retired at the hairpin.
But the race went wrong at second lap, as I spun in last part of first S curves and Martini hit me. Both got damage to front wing so we both had to pit and lost a lap. With the heavy fuel load the car was very difficult to drive and I had more spins. I pitted again to adjust front wing a bit, but after that I was already two laps down. To make things worse, I got penalized for ignoring blue flags but didn't manage to serve it before running wide in Peraltada and spinning into inside wall and losing a wheel. That was the end of my race.
Boutsen had another collision later in the race, this time with Warwick who had to pit.
McLarens were ahead most of the race. Alboreto managed to challenge them but he crashed late in the race following a brake failure. Several other drivers near the top had same fate in the closing laps.

Round 5 - Canada
I had quite a difficulties to get grips with the circuit. Especially with braking zones and the fast since-removed left-hander between the hairpin and start-finish straight.
Anyway, I qualified 23rd and ended 22nd in the grid after Tarquini got demoted. Otherwise the qualifying threw up major surprises, as the McLarens were only 5th and 7th!
Row 1: Patrese - Alboreto
Row 2: Berger - Mansell

The start was catastrophical and I was 25th at the first corner. I got overtaken by Tarquini in the first lap so I was last before the hairpin where Tarquini and Modena collided and Ghinzani had to avoid a bit. First lap 23rd then, before incident on lap 2 brought me back into the pits. I ran about 10 laps more before crashing in first corner and that was it.
Elsewhere in the race, McLarens quickly moved to the front, but Prost retired early. Senna then escaped and had some huge gap, even helped by Alliot who collided with Alboreto who had already lapped the Frenchman. Alboreto lost about 10 second in that spin. Polesitter Patrese crashed at the final chicane and had to pit for new front wing, therefore dropping back. But another easy win for Senna, who now has 28-point lead in the standings!

Round 6 - Detroit
Another street circuit where it's easy to make mistakes. Again happened to me, but I was able to put the car into better half of the grid (just) but only due to drivers doing too many laps. McLarens were again on the top, but this time it was Prost who took pole.

Last three were penalized drivers
DNQ: Ghinzani, Alliot, Schneider, Dalmas (crash in qualifying), Tarquini (failed to pre-qualify)
Start was not bad although lost one place. But then had to pit already on the second lap and was in the back. Arnoux crashed out on lap 4, Senna crashed into spinning Mansell and lost several laps as a result on lap 7. I continued until lap 16 when suspension failure put me into the wall at the end of the second of the three straights in the city area.
Bailey and Johansson were having great races until their retirements, Bailey was as high as second and Johansson third. Many crashes caused pit stops and therefore some top drivers ended some laps behind. Two more drivers ended their race in accidents. Modena collided with Nakajima in the first corner and Senna lost brakes and took Cheever out as a result.
Prost won easily, but Mauricio Gugelmin took surprise 2nd place.
1 Prost 63 laps
2 Gugelmin +49,7
3 Patrese +1.10,1

Since the late 1987 results are taken into account when looking at who is going to pre-qualify, two races before the cut-off Dallara is going straight to qualifying and Osella into pre-qualifying. I need at least 8th place to overtake Zakspeed who have one 7th and then 9th. AGS is quite safe thanks to their point in 1987 Australian GP.

Round 7 - France
I took qualifying lap early and when I had done that I was quite shocked - 3rd! Of course that didn't hold long, so I ended up 11th in the grid. No McLarens on the top 3, and Prost down to 9th!

There will be no pre-qualifying in Silverstone. The stewards decided to ban Rial team from British Grand Prix after they ran Andrea de Cesaris's car for about 20 laps on the track with gearbox stuck, while he was going about half a minute slower than the rest.
Off to race:
Good starting position but it all went wrong at the first corner. I didn't have the best start, but I was going side-by-side with Palmer, me in the inside before being pushed into a spin by Boutsen. I got slight damage and had to pit after first lap because car kept steering to the right on the straights. Only Streiff was behind me in this point, as he had to pit for front wing. From then on I made only progress by retirements ahead. On lap 30 I was 20th.
I pitted second time on lap 33, as my tyres were mostly gone at that point. After that I was a lap down and tried to unlap some drivers. I collided with Alboreto then and pitted for front wing. After that I tried to race just easily to the finish which I did, finishing 13th out of 14 classified. The one behind was Alboreto, who later on collided again, this time with Streiff who was just pitting. Alboreto lost several laps while getting his car back to going.
Prost climbed to the lead and was set for victory when Honda engine failed. Senna inherited the victory.
1 Senna 80 laps
2 Mansell +6,8
3 Nakajima +10,7
4 Patrese +20,0
5 Cheever +43,2
6 Nannnini +45,8

10 Caffi - 1 lap
11 Berger - 2 laps (engine)
12 Streiff - 2 laps
