The Ultimate F1 Driver Vote Contest!

Post by Shadaza »

It is currently wimbledon season and inspired by the one on one nature displayed in singles tennis I thought, how about a (completley suggestive) seeded competition where the users of this very forum vote for who they believe would be the overall best driver in f1 history!

Rounds would go down to public vote on a random drawn selection of racing traits such as "Best Qualifyer" for one round followed by "Best at Overtaking" in another until 1 driver remains as the overall best (or at least forum favourite!)

In the spirit of the WTA the seedings and rankings are very dubious and controversial in that they are decided by the list of grand prix wins found here -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Fo ... ix_winners

Therfore the top 4 seeds in order are, Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, Aryton Senna and Nigel Mansell.
The seeding extends down to all the drivers that have won 4 races or more, meaning the seeds finish at Eddie Irvine ranked 52nd.

To be a true knock out competition there needs to be 64 competitors to avoid the use of byes. I want to suggest therfore that the forum uses here nominate the final 12 competitors
-Remember these 12 must be drivers who have won 3 races or less
For example I would nominate the following 12 drivers (Though my vote will not count to avoid bias)

1. Robert Kubica
2. Jean Alesi
3. Phill Hill
4. Chris Amon
5. Thierry Boutsen
6. Giancarlo Fisichella
7. Heinz-Harald Frentzen
8. Johnny Herbert
9. Jose Froilan Gonzalez
10. Wolfgang von Trips
11. Elio de Angelis
12. Alessandro Nannini
(and sorry to Bellof, Brundle, Johansson, Heidfeld, Trulli, Kovalainen, Kobayashi, Sato and many others!)

This first vote is mainly to gage interest for this competition and of course *DISCLAIMER* comparing drivers of different eras is not scientific or truly viable but more an exercise in procastanation!

The Provisional catagories to be randomly picked for the 6 rounds are:

1.Best Race Pace
2.Best Qualifier
3.Best Wet Weather driver
4.Best at overtaking
5.Greatest ability in a slower car
6.Best at performing under pressure
7.Best Race Craft

Feel free to suggest alternatives (I am not happy with the last 1) and I state again the catagory to use for each round will be random!

So remember, nominate 12 drivers with 3 wins or less to enter as wildcards. :D 8-)

Wow thanks for the quick replys so far.

Brundle and Bellof look like safe bets with 4 votes each. Kubica also look good with 3 votes. 2 votes for HWNSNBM could prove a dark horse!

No love for Alesi, that man was a hero to me, he's currently being out voted by Bernie!

Thank you so much I was in the middle of doing the same when I saw you beat me to it, opps! Johnny Herbert, Andrea de Cesaris and Elio de Angelis also now have 3 votes making 10 drivers tied on 3 with only the three remaining spots. I am keen to begin the contest proper so I think it's time for a final deciding vote between theese drivers:

Pierluigi Martini, Mike Hawthorn, Roberto Moreno, Takuma Sato, Olivier Panis, Chris Amon, Tom Pryce, Johnny Herbert, Elio de Angelis and Andre de Cesaris

So I think everyone should pick 3 from thoose 10. Thank you

Technically I had just closed this stage, BUT I will add de Cesaris and de Angelis to the current tiebreak voting stage (and keep Amon in the vote still) increasing the final choice to 10 drivers as opposed to 8. I will not do this for any
new votes though. So Benetton, please feel free to choose 3 of the remaining 10 drivers.

I was going to leave this vote open longer but 3 drivers have made a clear break from the other 7. So joining; Kubica, Brundle, Bellof, HWNSNBM, Cervert, Warwick, Kobayashi, Pironi and Alesi in the main draw are:

Chris Amon, with 7 votes.
Mike Hawthorn with 6 votes.
and Pierluigi Martini with 5 votes.

No other driver had more then 3 votes, however all 10 drivers had at least 1 and only Phoenix specifically wanted "Amon, Hawthorn, Martini" showing a promising variety in tastes for the coming rounds.

The 12 wildcards will be randomly distributed to face the top 12 seeds, can any of them cause an upset?

The next post will contain the opening 8 matches of the first bracket, the "Ferrari" bracket.

Round 1, Bracket 1: The Ferrari Bracket

The opening draw for the F1rejects "Ultimate F1 Driver" sees number 1 seed Michael Schumacher face Jean Alesi in round 1, a draw that must of had the French man cursing. 10 World Champions find themselves in the Ferrari bracket. With Button vs Hulme and Brabham vs Rosberg meaning that some world champions are going home early! Father and Son Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve find themselves in the same bracket! Keke Rosberg would have liked to face his son Nico but he recieved absoloutley no nominations to even qualify!
5 of the 16 drivers have Driven for Ferrari.

For me the the best match of the bracket is Jones vs G.Villeneuve. Certainly Villeneuve does not deserve to be seeded so low because of his unfortunate accident at Zolder preventing him from taking the future wins and even championships he almost certainly would have achieved, Alan Jones is no sloutch and Alan was responsible for bringing Williams their first ever WDC the fiery Australian showed great determination and racing spirit in what ever he drove.

The random Catagory drawn was number 2: Best Qualifier
Therfore the focus for round 1 is Qualifying, though feel free to consider other areas if undecided.

The Ferrari Bracket Draw in full

1.Michael Schumacher vs WC9 Jean Alesi
The stat busting German vs the Likable Frenchman

32.Jenson Button vs 33.Denny Hulme

When champions collide

17.Jack Brabham vs 48. Keke Rosberg
When Champions collide x2

16.Lewis Hamilton vs 49.Michele Alboreto

McLaren man vs Ferrari man

9.Juan Manuel Fangio vs WC5 Francois Cervert

F1's Grand daddy vs Stewarts apprentice

24.Alan Jones vs 41.Gilles Villeneuve [Shadaza's Match of the Bracket]
One of Australia's finest vs Daddy Villenueve

25.Jacques Villeneueve vs 40. Jacques Laffite

Son Villeneuve vs Ligier's hero

8.Niki Lauda vs WC12 Pierluigi Martini

Back from oblivion mega hero vs Minnow team superstar!

Topic: Qualifying

BONUS Question: Should the next bracket?: (a) use the same round 1 question as this bracket. (b) use a different question. (c) skip the individual categories and instead simply vote on the best overall driver.

Personally I Perfer (a) or (b) because option (c) would lose the overall focus and instead turn the contest in to a plain popularity contest. However I want the community to decide.

Alright, here are my picks.

Michael Schumacher vs Jean Alesi
I pick Schumacher, because, quite simply, he has the record.

Jenson Button vs Denny Hulme
For this one, I'll go with Button. He's not known for his qualifying pace, but Hulme didn't score any pole in his championship year.

Jack Brabham vs Keke Rosberg
I'm going with Rosberg here, just because of Silverstone 1985.

Lewis Hamilton vs Michele Alboreto
Even when Alboreto had a good car, he only scored two poles, so I'll go with Hamilton.

Juan Manuel Fangio vs François Cevert
I know Cevert had good racecraft, but he scored no poles when the Tyrrell was dominant. It's Fangio for me.

Alan Jones vs Gilles Villeneuve
This time, I'll give it to Gilles. Jones had monster race pace, but Villeneuve was quicker overall.

Jacques Villeneuve vs Jacques Laffite
Villeneuve took more poles, but in a dominant car, while Laffite was always in the second or third best car. Laffite gets my vote.

Niki Lauda vs Pierluigi Martini
Martini may have scored Minardi's only front row start, but that was mainly because of the Pirelli quali tyres. Overall, Lauda gets my vote here.

As for the next brackets, I choose option (b).

Michael Schumacher vs Jean Alesi
Sorry Jean, but I am going with Schumacher for this one.

Jenson Button vs Denny Hulme
Very tight, but I guess Button as the edge.

Jack Brabham vs Keke Rosberg
Jack Brabham clearly.

Lewis Hamilton vs Michele Alboreto
Hamilton is always up there so I will vote for him.

Juan Manuel Fangio vs François Cevert
Has to be Fangio...

Alan Jones vs Gilles Villeneuve
Very tight too, but since Villeneuve had more raw speed I will go with him.

Jacques Villeneuve vs Jacques Laffite
Jacques Laffite. He score some poles without never being in the best team.

Niki Lauda vs Pierluigi Martini
Niki Lauda despite Martini heroics the Minardi.

For bonus question I chose B.

32.Jenson Button vs 33.Denny Hulme

17.Jack Brabham vs 48. Keke Rosberg

16.Lewis Hamilton vs 49.Michele Alboreto

9.Juan Manuel Fangio vs WC5 Francois Cervert

24.Alan Jones vs 41.Gilles Villeneuve

25.Jacques Villeneueve vs 40. Jacques Laffite

8.Niki Lauda vs WC12 Pierluigi Martini

I'd take (b) for the bonus question.

1.Michael Schumacher vs WC9 Jean Alesi
The stat busting German vs the Likable Frenchman
Much as I want to vote Alesi, Michael Schumacher has the record.

32.Jenson Button vs 33.Denny Hulme
When champions collide
Neither are known for their qualifying pace, but Hulme only ever got the one pole (and rather late in his career at that). Jenson Button gets my vote.

17.Jack Brabham vs 48. Keke Rosberg
When Champions collide x2
Going with Jack Brabham here - he was still snagging poles at the end of his career, when the Brabham was no longer the top car.

16.Lewis Hamilton vs 49.Michele Alboreto
McLaren man vs Ferrari man
Although the last two years have been rather dry for Lewis on the qualifying front, Alboreto never struck me as anything more than a pretty good driver who was given a car a bit beyond his talent level. Lewis Hamilton for me.

9.Juan Manuel Fangio vs WC5 Francois Cervert
F1's Grand daddy vs Stewarts apprentice
Cevert never qualified on pole, and was on the front row a grand total of one time. This pretty much gives it to Juan Manuel Fangio by default.

24.Alan Jones vs 41.Gilles Villeneuve [Shadaza's Match of the Bracket]
One of Australia's finest vs Daddy Villenueve
Really not sure about this one, Jones has more poles, though that can be put down to his having a top car for 3 whole years, but in '79 he got more than Villeneuve even though the Ferrari was as good if not better than the Williams. But then, Villeneuve managed to get the '81 Ferrari on pole in San Marino even though there were several better cars, and did some superhuman things with the 1980 Ferrari, which we all know was pure shite. On balance though, I think I'll vote for Gilles Villeneuve

25.Jacques Villeneueve vs 40. Jacques Laffite
Son Villeneuve vs Ligier's hero
Laffite got less poles than Villeneuve here, but you can't ignore how much better the '96-'97 Williams' were compared to the cars Laffite got, which were pretty decent, but not great. Jacques Laffite gets the nod from me.

8.Niki Lauda vs WC12 Pierluigi Martini
Back from oblivion mega hero vs Minnow team superstar!
Martini might have the distinction of getting a Minardi on the front row, but apart from that and some good runs in late 1989, he was firmly in the midfield. Lauda, however, was quite the demon qualifier in his time, including 6 consecutive poles in 1974. I'll vote for Niki Lauda

As for the bonus question, my personal preference would be to keep running the same question until the end, so we have determined the best qualifier, then run it again with a different question. However, I'm very meticulous, and I don't think most people will find the prospect of doing this over several times enthralling, so unless a bunch of people like my idea, (you never know, this is the F1Rejects Forum) I'll say B.

It would have been so much better if the 60 drivers with 3 or more wins had been included, and the remaining four chosen between the people with 2 wins (González, Trintignant, Von Trips, Rodríguez, Siffert, Revson, Depailler, Jabouille, Tambay and De Angelis). Also I don't see what's the need to start so fast, I hadn't seen this post until now.

Also I don't see what's the need to start so fast, I hadn't seen this post until now.

Well I wanted to give a more open option to allow drivers to be voted in who the community thought were fast but may have been unlucky with wins. As for starting this too fast, I would agree but the nominating drivers stage was just a preliminary. I plan on keeping the vote for round 1 open longer.
