Straightforward enough, who would you like to see portraying who in the film
My first initial thought is Benedict Cumberbatch as James Hunt

Well, I think every film needs Nicolas Cage. What role could he play, though?
And Keanu Reeves as Jochen Mass.

Who on Earth are they going to find with the charisma and gravitas to play Otto Stuppacher?
It's just unbelievable...that Formula 1 could be such a ridiculous melange of idiots.

According to IMDB two of the lead cast has already been decided: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1979320/
So its Thor as James Hunt

Some of you may remember him as Captain Kirks dad from the reboot of Star Trek.
and Frederick Zoller from Inglorious Bathplugs as Niki Lauda

I'm curious to see what the producers are going to do about the cars from the 1976 season. There aren't that many still around, unless they commission replicas. Hope they won't all be CGI.

with the cars, woulden't the easiest way round this be to stick replica shells on Go-Karts and speed up the footage?

Surely we first need to have a mystery film, uncovering the greatest mystery of all time.
What is Deletraz doing?
Or
I am slightly bored, starring Nick Heidfeld (Uncovering the mystery of why Nick Heidfeld is slightly bored)

The only problem with that is that RUSH will be set in 1976. Ganz might be an appropriate choice if they were making a film based on the 2010 season, but he's too old to place a fifty-year-old Bernie.
And the only reason why you're suggesting him is because he played Hitler in DOWNFALL.

I actually don't think the cars will be much of a problem, you don't need the entire grid and many frontrunning cars from that era are still around and run in historics/demonstrations (think Goodwood Festival) so getting enough cars is not impossible (though it won't come cheap, especially to run them at speed, so it depends on the budget).
What might be a problem would be period tracks, since many of them have been completely overhauled (Osterreich Ring, Zandvoort, Fuji), it would probably be possible to "dress up" some of the reletively untouched tracks to resemble their former selves, again depending on budget. Of course, the most important track of them all, the 'Ring, hasn't actually changed that much, but whether they would be allowed to run a period car there at any kind of speed is another matter.
So in my opinion doing it "right" is possible, but expensive.

Well, maybe they don't have to use the actual cars, but... just giving the replica crew lots of time with the steady car to take all the measures, do the laser scanning, take 1000+ photos of all the details etc. as well as tips from the drivers (the living ones) and engineers.
There was a guy that built a Volvo OV4 hot rod, and didn't even have the stock car to start with. He actually visited the Volvo museum and took all the necessary measures to build the car looking as close to the original as possible.
Now his car is also on display in this museum.

CGI would be involved in this case. Although some of the tracks' layouts hasn't changed a bit through the years, the surroundings (buildings, stands etc.) did.
For tracks that have been heavily modified... well - my idea would be to find some tracks that have exactly the same corners (even if it is a single corner) as the original one.
Then they would film all the necessary sequences, add some good CGI (buildings, widening or narrowing the track if necessary, stands, crowd) and combine them into a whole race sequence. Considering that they would try to include all the highlights, filming locations would be narrowed down to the original track + tracks for additional footage + some green screen footage (just find a long strip, put up a big green screen and shoot what you have to).

But if you are an F1 enthusiast and really want to make a film that is as accurate as it gets...

I think Niki Lauda should make a cameo appearance as a background person of some sort. A bit like how Stan Lee appears in all the Marvel movies.
