Your Reject of the Race - Singapore!

Post by Captain Hammer »

Because I'm playing Russian Roulette with my internet connection, this has to go up a little earlier than ususal. Anyway, it's Reject time!

The first and most obvious candidate is Romain Grosjean for imitating Nelson Piquet almost flawlessly.

Well, so far the mid-season replacements look to be on their way to ROTR. The three new(ish) drivers comprised the bottom three in both practice sessions so far, and Fisi would have been fourth from the bottom both times had Buemi not managed to save him that ignominy in Free Practice 2. But there's still time to pull it out!

Renault's campaign for the ROTR award for this time around is impressive even as early as Friday, with GRSJN replicating the scandalous Piquet spin at Turn 17 and two of their major sponsors having pulled out because of the cheating verdict.
And the race hasn't even started yet.

But as Jamie and Enoch say, these awards are always based upon expectations, so where do we draw the line? Wasn't at least part of this to be expected after the verdict came out?
I guess the only way is up and if they have a good race with both cars finishing, they should not get the award - depending of course on the competition from other candidates for the award, which hasn't exactly materialized yet.
"I don't think we should be used to finance (the manufacturers') R&D because they will produce that engine anyway" said Monisha Kaltenborn.
"You will never see a Mercedes using a Ferrari engine or the other way round."

Agreed, I expected Ferrari to do not so well this weekend and it seems the case. Although based on Q1 I would have thought that Kimi had enough in him to make Q2.

At this moment after qualifying I have to agree with thalion: Shared between Fisi, Liuzzi, Grosjean and Alguersuari. Last four places in quali.

This is my first post and I therefore want to make it really count and nominate Nicole, or perhaps it should be Lewis Hamilton for reuniting with Nicole. I thought, as did our hosts, that we had seen the last of her.

Five Live's Holly Samos had an early shout for ROTR when she asked the Bridgestone rep "are there any special considerations for a night race"

"yes we have a special compound that has extra grip in the dark". Tongue in check.

Jonathan Legard, purely for this insightful comment.

Kravitz: I think Hamilton has one more set of soft tyres than everybody else.
Legard: Yes, well Lewis Hamilton has an extra set as well, so we'll have to look out for that.

I also remember him saying something along the lines of this:

"Vettel puts in a good lap. As does Button." (Vettel's lap was 4 seconds slower than Button's. At least, I think it was Vettel)

Then Martin comes along with, "Jenson's lap isn't good enough."

I think that speaks for itself.

He only seemed to be looking at the fact that Button was showing a green minus figure on the timing screen, and announcing this as a good thing, despite the fact that what the number was actually telling us was that Button was around two hundredths of a second away from being bumped from Q1.

One can forgive these lapses if they come with the energy and passion of a Murray Walker, but Jonathan "Thad'll Do" Legard brings whole new meanings to the word tedious.

For all of Legard's tedious and dull commentaries Jenson Button gets my vote. He's doing an F1 version of Greg Norman blowing a 6 shot lead at the Masters, he's obviously nervous and he's being outpaced by Rubens. A podium for Rubens and no points for Button and its only 8 points with 3 races left, and then anything's possible.

My vote goes to Brawn GP. 10th and 12th on the grid at a street circuit is a disaster and Red Bull look set to score a swag of points in the process.

Brawn GP for qualifying 10th and 12th
Jonathan Legard for calling Vettel's 1:51s at the start of Q2 "a good lap". BBC, please get around to sacking him soon.

Force India: Sorry, but 2nd and 6th in Italy to 16th and last in Singapore. Ouch. A little slack as we expected them to fail on high downforce tracks.

Ferrari: No cars in Q3, Fisi struggling, and Raikkonen only 13th.

Jenson Button: 12th? Not great from the championship leader. With Vettel 2nd and Barichello 10th who knows what will happen

Renault: Self-explanatory.

Barrichello's 10th because of a gearbox change and Vettel's 2nd. Just had to correct you there

Night races.

I'm having to wake up at 5 AM to watch this race. Grr. So I'm gonna get five hours of sleep or so, watch the race, and then pass out for five more hours... two days before classes start. Great.

I'm not one of those who's been calling for Legard's head, but I did find it quite surprising when, following a Ted Kravitz report that Hamilton would be the only one going out on the softer tyres at the start of Q2, Legard said "Actually Ted, I think you'll find Hamilton's gone out on the softs as well."

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Barrichello at the moment. In contrast to Alonso's ability in keeping the Renault out of the wall when pushing it to it's absolute limit. (Possibly the best piece of driving I've ever seen in a 2009 F1 car), he manages to wreck the floor, scrapes into Q3 by only the skin of his teeth, and then flings the thing into the wall after setting fifth so nobody can better that.

This vote has nothing to do with the fact that Rubens is down for my ROTR in the Predicament Predictions thread...

Red Bull Stable:
Getting old now. Alguersauri has a pit problem and causes an accident with Sutil. Fuel problem for Torro Rosso, Webber crashes, Vettel speeds in the pitlane. Good Lord, next Buemi's gonna crash, no?

EDIT: As I post this, Buemi is wheeled into the garage.

Well, Vettel might still get his penalty. If he does after the race I say Red Bull is most definitely the ROTR. Vettel also ran over the kerbing.

After reading that dailymail article, I'm going to forget all about the race and nominate the F1Rocks stars for ROTR. It's obvious that the people interviewed don't know the difference between F1 and A1 Steak Sauce so their attempt to pretend they car about F1 is as cringe-worthy as Luca Badoer's performances in the Ferrari. At the very least, Lindsay Lohan deserves a nomination for confusing NASCAR with F1. And how can you "study" NASCAR for a year anyway?
