Q&A with Phoenix McAllister

After the recent announcement that Team Phoenix would be renamed Aeroracing Engineering for the 2015 season, we've arranged a short interview with Phoenix McAllister, who will be the team's lead driver for next year as well as hold an important post within the team.

-First off, why rename the team?

Quite simply, because we wanted a change. The team was becoming stagnant, and with this change we're doing a major reshuffle at all fronts, because radical changes were needed.

-Do you think podiums and victories are achievable?

Yes - but not in the short term. We'll need a couple years to sort everything up but we could surprise from time to time too. We're very calm, we don't need to rush things. For us, it's more important to do things step by step.

-What is the philosophy of the team?

The problem with Team Phoenix was that we got too embroiled on the commercial side of things. As the name suggests, Aeroracing Engineering is focusing almost solely on the racing side. We're looking for racing people, passionate folks. Our commercial side is reduced solely to ensure the team can operate without any issues. However, we'll release merchandise of the team and organize some events for fans, that's for sure.

-What about the second driver?

We've not confirmed anything as of yet. We are in talks with various drivers, but they definately need to bring money because we'll need to undergo a heavy development programme in the near future to ensure that we'll be competitive in the future. Drivers from the junior teams will one day be promoted if they're good enough, but only after proving their worth.

-It was rumoured Pippa Mann could be driving one of the cars...

We've talked to her, because she has strong support from several Manx companies, and seh's a former series champion. She really has something special on her, and it'd be a huge pleasure to have her with us.

-What about The Stig then?

Oh, he's found it difficult to adapt to this series, which is surprising because he had a strong reputation from other categories. But he'll find his feet, I'm sure. He's not been ruled out yet... However, truth be told, we're waiting to see if Pippa Mann is available or not.

-And the engine suppliers?

We still don't know, but we've heard Ford is very interested in offering us a works deal as well as technical assistance. We're in talks with them and we'll keep you informed.

By the way, are you purely interested in her if she is allowed by Aerond (or whoever it is that decides these things...) to be a pay driver, or do you just want her full stop (no innuendo intended) next season? And I probably won't decide until the end of this season whether she decides to rejoin her own team or not.

The ruling says that any regular driver can´t become a pay-driver. As Pippa drove in 2013, it isn´t possible for her to be turned into a Pay Driver. This wouldn´t be a problem with any other racer of the 2010-2012 era as they haven´t been given stats under the current system. A pay driver can become a regular driver (as decided by team owner) if scores at least 10 points within a season.

Could an exception be made for Ben Fleet as he scored 7 pole positions last year?

I configured the Random Grip factor as discussed last night.
The driver with the less ammount is Gary Cameron with 1660 points, and the highest is Miko Fakkinen with 2600, due to his lack of experience and the high inconsistence ratio of his car.

From a few simulations now racing at the top should be a bit closer (more cars fighting for podium places) and PreQ should be closer as well

He started off as a pay-driver, and he is to continue to do so (just in case Foxdale run into difficulties and need credits to improve things, like reliabilty, for example... ;) ).

MA-Racing: Driver number four makes his appearance.

After Mitie Aviation Racing bagan the year with Valsattis and Pchelintsev, Stephen Mackintosh was brought in to help the team. Now it's the turn of David Neuberg. The youngster has been competing in the F3 series for the junior team and has had a mixed season so far. Neuberg brings much needed sponsorship from Drubnik, his fathers company. "We're delighted to bring David on board", said team boss Mr.Alexander. "He's had a difficult season so far with the junior team, but the extra money brought in for running him will help improve the car throughout the year."
David too, was happy to help the team. "I'm happy to help the team whatever way I can. My contract with the main team lasts for just 4 races, and I'd like to thank my sponsors for giving me the opportunity to race with the best."
As of yet, it is still undecided who will take over from Neuberg after the 4th race, with both Pchelintsev and Mackintosh being similar in pace in the time they've had in the car.

just to confirm, Neuberg is in the car alongside Valsattis for race 5,6,7 and 8. He's also a pay-driver.

Then I'm affraid there's no deal. Don't get me wrong, I'd REALLY like to give her the seat, but sadly I desperately need a pay driver to improve the car, since we're barely able to score points when there's some attrition, let alone doing so on merit alone. BTW I'd like to know, Aerond, if you'd like, how much improvement can I still extract from my engine, as well as know when will The Stig pay up.

Phoenix, I think I have found a solution to your pay-driver problem! I was browsing through some old F1 News magazines from 1994 (which featured, amongst others, Jim Bamber, Bob Constanduros and Joe Saward!) and I found this interview with a regular contributor to the magazine, who also happens to be a pay-driver! Look at the penultimate paragraph for his personal sponsors...

F1 News, 23rd November 1994 wrote:Eff One - The Man Behind The Mask

In response to your many requests we have decided that it is time to unmask our own 'Eff One.

Personal Life

Full Name: Ephran One Jnr.

Birthdate: 31st October (Hallowe'en)

Star Sign: Cliff Richard

Birthplace: I don't really know. I was too young and my mother swears she wasn't there at the time.

Height: I find it safer not to stand still long enough to be measured.

Weight: According to 'Police 5', I am medium build.

Colour of eyes: Red

Are you Left or Right handed? Actually, I am amphibious.

Nickname: Ever since I was at school I have been known as 'Oy You', but since working in F1, people seem to call me Dash It - as in 'Have you seen what Dash It has written this week?'

Family: Mrs. Eff, well, that's what I call her, plus the two little Effers.

Early Life

Did you enjoy school?
I think that's a bit of a personal question. I admit I enjoyed matron a few times, but so did most of 4C.

What were your best subjects?

I was particularly good at country dancing and I won the school prize for Best Milk Monitor.

What was your first job?
I was trained as a coronation programme seller and then I got a job as Marcel Marceau's script writer, but I'm still waiting for a proper job.

Who or what was your first love?
Oh, that's got to be me.

What was your first car?
A Reliant Robin Turbo. Unfortunately, one of the front wheel's was missing.

When did you first become interested in motor racing?
What's motor racing?

Home Life

Where is your present home?
A telephone box between the pits and the Gent's at Silverstone. It's a bit cramped, but Mrs Eff doesn't like me using the family home. She says it ruins her credibility with the neighbours.

Do you have any pets?
Yes, an earthworm called Horace.

What do you do to relax?
I used to be a train spotter, but the station master threw me out for shouting, "Look, there's another one!"

Most treasured possession?
My birth certificate. It makes it possible to prove everyone wrong.

Everday road car?
I drive a Ferrari F40 - Don't look at me like that, the Morris Marina body is just to fool people.

Do you have any phobias?
Not any more. I used to have, but my wife forgot to water them and they died.

Likes and dislikes

What makes you laugh?
My column. It must have universal appeal, because all the women I've ever met say it makes them laugh too.

What makes you really angry?
Gossips and people who spread malicious romour.

What is your favourite music?
Good quality pop, like the Bay City Rollers or Brotherhood of Man, but I also enjoy classical music - I think it's a lot better than it sounds.

Is there any type of music you hate?
I hate 'happy ending' film music. It's so depressing.

What food do you like most?
Cocktail cherries, because you always get a drink with them.

Is there any food you dislike?
Any that I have to pay for.

What is your favourite film?
Polaroid is my favourite film. At least you don't have to give it to the chemist to lose.

Who is your favourite actor/actress?
I've always admired Judith Chalmers.

What is your favourite colour?
I have no colour preference, as long as she's attractive and has a good figure.

Professional Life

Who has been the biggest influence on career?
My probation officer.

Who do you think is the greatest ever racing driver?
American driver, Pete Arun. He was before my time, but I saw him in a film called "Grand Prix" and I think he was brilliant. Have you ever noticed how much he resembled James Gardner, the actor?

Which is your favourite race track?
Wherever the next race is, at least it gets me out of that telephone box.

Which track do you least like?
That's easy. I've always hated the Northern Line.

What do you think is the single most important advance in motor racing safety?
Carpeting circuit bars has dramatically reduced accident injuries.

What was your worst racing moment?
Biting into a Brands Hatch beefburger.

Which race do you remember with most satisfaction?
I am not prepared to answer that as Mrs Eff might be reading this.

Do you have any raceday superstitions or lucky mascots?
On racedays, I always get into the car from the same side - the driver's side - before driving to the circuit.

Who are your personal sponsors?
Campaign for Adult Literacy and the Department of Social Services.

Who do you tip for future F1 stardom?
Personally, I'd love to see Mr and Mrs Michael Andretti return. They would soon be Eff One stars again.

His picture was interesting. He very much resembles Top Gear's The Stig, but with a white balaclava and tinted, red skiing goggles in place of the tinted, white racing helmet...

Huh? I thought the minimum from a paydriver was 20?

And Horizon got 80 last year for Reyna-Sanchez's one off...

Correction: MRT got 80 credits for Reyna-Sanchez's one off in the USA because with the way the pre-qualifying draw worked out and with CR being so useless, I could get away with it. :P

So that would be 10am in Eastern Standard Time, 6 hours behind. Well, here's hoping I actually wake up before that time. How long does a race usually last?

like a real F1 race (70 to 110 mins)

Slightly interesting fact: 1 credits = $10 000 (I think)

(Yes, I am just trying to boost my post count to beat Phoenix  )

I have a task assignment for someone who wants to spend an hour and a half with photoshop (probably less)

I can do it (But I'll probably do such a shockingly bad job at it that TMLW will probably redo it for me anyway  )

I may be up for the challenge, depending on what it involves.
This is a cool spot.

It's not difficult (easier than painting a gp2 car), but I'd like to know who has availability to get it ready fast.

Here we go then; I need someone to take this as a template and paint (in this same size, don´t have to escale or anything) every car on the grid. It doesn´t have to look exactly, but more or less resemble the current cars on the grid (so you can tell if it´s an Acuri or a MRT by just looking at it, but doesn´t have to be incredibly exact for those cars which use the same colours).

A) I have little knowledge of the current paint-schemes of the F1RWRS grid, which makes me kind of useless for this task.
B) I'm currently busy working on my own project right now instead :P

So hopefully someone else will pick this task up.

How Acuri will spend their 80 credits:

Andrea Acuri's Qualifying Performance - 30 credits
Acuri's engine upgrade - 50 credits

Should be 80 credits in total

I can give it a go Aerond, though I don't have photoshop, just paint.NET.

Whilst I work on the ones I know, could someone find the page which Aerond posted all the liveries on please?
