I remember when I was about 14 I started making my own F1 t-shirts with stencils, a scanner and iron on transfers because a) I couldn't afford most of what was out there b) the only opportunity, pre widespread internet, was to buy at races and c) they were all designed with blokes in mind and I wanted ladies fit shirts, and something a bit different with the logos. Most of them were fairly rubbish but I did make a Monaco GP one very like the one on the site. I should have set myself up in business with it really.

There's still time to set up your own business. Maybe your USP would be to cater for the female market? It could work...

The biggest stumbling block would be copyrights for using names and logos. Another one I made was a very cool skinny Senninha one by scanning in a picture from a magazine, where only a few people in the UK knew what Senninha was. God knows how I'd manage to put that into production.

Dedicated fans like those of us on here and my dad would have heard of Senninha. But yeah, I would not know how to practically go about setting up a business. Someone to give you a set-up loan and some advice, then maybe some trade stands at Silverstone/Brands Hatch/whichever race track is closest to you, website (however you do one of those), maybe a small ad in the web directory of Autosport... But I would be a bit bewildered doing this in practice!

And I don't know how much of this is under copyright, I got stuff from there a tear or two ago for my dad, and pretty much all the teams they had represented on there were defunct teams, who would not be in a position to enforce copyright claims.

I run my own business already in gymnastics/stunt/acrobatics so I'm not a total novice. But this would be a completely different kettle of fish. Well who knows, someday I may want a new project!

Bit of a bump for this thread - I bought this McLaren team shirt in a second hand shirt today, and I'm trying to pin down what season it's from (assuming it's genuine and not just an elaborate replica!):


After a little googling, it seems very similar to what Ron Dennis and another team member are wearing in these two photos, both from 1984:

But there are a couple of main differences...
1. There are no 'proper' Marlboro logos on it (including the back) - was cigarette advertising already banned in some places in the '80s?
2. There is no TAG patch on it, which could mean it's a bit older, perhaps from the first part of 1983 (wikipedia tells me the TAG engine was only introduced at Zandvoort in 1983)

So at the moment I'm guessing British GP 1983. Anyone have any further ideas?

You are certainly in the right ballpark - the only two seasons where SAIMA and Hercules were sponsoring McLaren together were '83 and '84. Beyond that, I don't really know.

As far as I know, Segafredo didn't sponsor McLaren in 1983, so using yours and Stramala's logic, it's from 1984
