[GPM2] Doing the impossible: Getting a "Life"...

Post by Ferrarist »

No, don't worry. I'm not going to get myself a life here. Or else I wouldn't have time to bring you my side-project. I'm using Nuppiz's excellent Leftovers Mod for GPM2. And I'm going for the impossible, I'm going to manage Life. Well, we all know about the difficulties of Life. Having a crap car, a crap engine and almost no money. While I'll try to play straight, I might coming out...as a cheat later on. Hopefully I'll have to stay in the closet...as a cheat. ;) And as Ben Edwards would say: "And away we go!"

The first thing I want to take car of, is the money. I need a cash flow in order to being able to steal parts from other teams at least. Our tight finances make it impossible to develop parts on our own, and they take too damn long. So I authorize all sorts of marketing, and allocate 100% of my time to $$ sponsor "Sasol". That should give me a 10-race contract, and thus a steady income.

Then I look after my staff, and my god! They all have just a half star skill, so in other words: They Suck! Still, I hire 10 excellent assistants for each department, because for example, you need to have at least 10 mechanics in your pit crew. The next look goes to my drivers, and while they have...urm...reasonable skills, they all cost money! The problem is, breaking a contract mid-season also costs money. I mean, there are some pay drivers like Schiattarella, Barbazza or Deletraz, which I may put into consideration for the next season. But when I think about having to pay 800.000 $ (!) to 38-year-old Bruno Giacomelli, this makes me wanna do a Günter Schmid. But split into 16 races, the salary isn't that much. It's just that Giacomelli doesn't give me a bang for my buck.

Now before we can do any testing, we'll have to arrange tire, spare parts, fuel and security contracts. For each area we have a choice of five companies. They distinguish themselves in quality and price. And here comes the 64.000 $ question: Why should I pay 10.000 $ for *****-tires, when I can have ****1/2-tires for 8.000 $. As tires for 7.000 $ have just ***, I'll go with the 8.000 $ ones. The same goes with the spare parts for 2.500 $. Fuel is a bit different, as each manufacturer "recommends" an engine for his product. My Life F35 W12 engine just happens to be recommended by a ***-brand, which costs 7.000 $ per race. I think that's alright, and I'll choose the fuel by Shell (And aspire to advertise for Sasol...). As for security, you always should take the *****-security, as they can help later with breaking into teams. They are definitely worth the expenses.

Before we go out testing, I'll have to check the cars first. And in their current specification, they weight 680 KG! Not only are they slow as mule, they are also overweight. But here's my approach: I'll always fit the lightest parts first, then I gradually build in the better parts, so I can have a good mix between light parts, and the one that are heavier, but better. Our cars weight 649 KG now, which is fine. But, now let's go testing at our home track in Monza:

At first I'll let all drivers run installation laps. 2x10 laps should be enough. Why 2x10? Because drivers tend to be pretty slow on their first run, and it also gives you the chance to make necessary adjustments on the car setup. So you can set some good benchmark times, which let you judge better which parts to use, and which not. Speaking of first runs, they are all horrendous: Brabham scores only a 2:01.539, Giacomelli manages to make at least a 1:57.534, but Scapini also stays over 2 Minutes. But all drivers wanted the brake balance to move forward, so maybe that'll...I hope.

The second run is a bit better, but you know what they say about a shot in your head and a shot in your foot. Brabham manages to set a 1:52, Giacomelli a 1:50 and Scapini a 1:53. But they are all satisfied with the setup, which allows us to move on. Now I'll check the suggestions our drivers make about how to improve the chassis. The drivers want me to "improve" the rear wing, front wing and side pods, as well as doing something about EMS and Transmissions. Well, let's take a look at what we've got: For now I'm going to keep the single wings, and just put on better side pods. That puts our cars at 650 KG, which should be my limit. And look: Giacomelli even manages to set a 1:49.6 time. Woohoo! And the lap times improve even further, when I decide to build a better transmission. Giacomelli scores a 1:49.1, while Brabham and Scapini also score better times:

Image

But enough with testing for now. It's pretty expensive, but it is definitely important, in order to test new parts. Anyway, let's do some racing, or rather "trying not to qualify at all":

Image

:(

And here are the race results:
Image

Sounds like there is a looooooooooooooooot of work to do...

Very interesting!

Can you tell us about the relative teams strengths'? How powerful your engine is compared with the other teams? You must be really desperate to qualify 12 seconds off the pace!

As you might have seen in the race results, Fondmetal and Onyx are the top teams here. Osella, Rial may also snatch up a win here and there. Zakspeed, Brabham, Andrea Moda, AGS, Modena and Pacific are solid midfielders, while Coloni and EuroBrun are clearly at the back of the pack.

My Life F35 W12 engine weighs 160 KG, but only puts out 450 BHP. In contrast, the Judd GV (which should be the best engine in the game) puts out 675 BHP and only weighs 130 KG. So yeah, my engine is pretty much crap.

And now let's continue with the program:

After the race, I was shocked at the sight of my bank balance. I've lost more than 400.000 $ over the weekend! But Sasol is willing to sponsor me for 8 races. I'll get 478.000 $ for the most costly parts, and 266.000 $ for the expensive parts. I managed to sell three most costly and two expensive places, so this should reduce my deficit I bit. Still, I also lay off five engineers, to save some money, too. But with only 412.296 $ left, I only replace the worn out parts. Testing and acquiring parts are too expensive for now, which is bad, because testing is very important for you. Not only can your drivers test new parts, but they also gain confidence if let them run longruns. But maybe Nokia will sponsor me after the Mexico GP, which should hopefully give me a small cash-flow.

So will we qualify for the Grand Prix?

Image

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

Image

ROTR should clearly be Johansson, for spinning off that early in the race.

And now comes to ever-important question: How much loss will we make, and can we avoid insolvency?
.
.
.
Yay! We only lost some 145.000 $ this weekend. And it turns out that Nokia wants to sponsor us. After selling them advertising space worth a million dollars (for eight race), we should probably make modest gains by now. And the big advantage in not-qualifying is that I won't have to replace my parts so often. So without replacing our parts, we go to our third weekend of the year at Imola.

Image

How the hell did get Zakspeed get there? Definitely the ROTR here.

Image

Nothing too surprising here...

It seems Nuppiz did a great job with the performance

You might get into some trouble with the engine power, though. I remember I once did a 1982 season mod (no picture changes, just stats) on which the engines were all between 500-600 BHP, and the AI tended to run out of fuel more than usual. I don't know about the other teams, maybe they are all over 600 BHP and you are the only one really screwed, your Brazilian performance is now starting to look stellar in comparison!

First of all, thank you for your feedback. And maybe I can "reward" you with a qualifying in Monaco. I mean, Andrea Moda qualifed their car in Monaco in real-life, so why shouldn't I succeed?

Well, I made a profit, although a very modest 26.000 $. But our next sponsor is already interested, even though I doubt that we'll ever do more than 100.000 $ this year.
I also find it ironic that Fondmetal sponsors me. What a nice guy Gabriele Rumi is. Not only he's sponsoring his team, he's also sponsoring others. Kinda like the Didi Mateschitz of F1Rejects.

As for our new car chassis: Only 9% of the car design are complete so far, but I don't have the resources to hire more assistants. And my designer sucks anyway, yet I don't yet whether I can afford better personnel for next year. Man, life sucks hard...

Meanwhile, in order to give my engineers SOMETHING to do, I let them research some driver aids. But why research legal one? Why not just research a turbo? Yeah, now we're really talking. 8-) But since I have only five engineers left, this might take a little while.

Image
These are all driver aids that can be researched in GPM2...and my bank balance.

But first, we have to race at Jerez...or rather watching the other race there.

Image

What a shock.

Image
Wait? AGS...wins? Oh, and ROTR should clearly go to Onyx.

After the Spanish GP, we've made more profit than ever. 65.000 $ are pretty good. Still, I need two more sponsors, but I'm confident that they'll come. I mean, even bad publicity is some publicity, isn't it?

But then there are my drivers, which are relatively expensive. But sacking them mid-season costs some money. In Gary Brabham's case it'd cost me 225.000 $! Looks like I'll have to wait until the second half of the season, before sacking him. Suitable replacements who might even bring some money into my team are there. Such as Jean-Deniz Deletraz (2.000.000 $), Ricardo Rosset (2.000.000 $) or Chanoch Nissany (3.000.000 $). And as long as they bring some cold, hard cash into the team, I don't care that much about the quality of the drivers. We're slow anyway!

Now we're off to Monaco, and maybe, just maybe, a little wonder will happen. Right? RIGHT?

Image

And what is Brabham doing? I mean, Giacomelli actually brought out 110% of our car, but what was Brabham bringing out? Perhaps just 100%, but still he's way too slow. And I have to pay him for that! Okay, I'll let him drive until the 8th race. Afterwards, a horrible driver who actually pays for his drive will replace him!

Image

No surprises here. Championship leader Tarquini wins one more grand prix.

I sort of use the lightest parts already, with the only adjustments being made in terms of cooling system, EMS, transmission, side pods and air box. And developing new parts takes a whole lot of time, and I can't afford that much personnel right now. Hell, I don't even have enough reserves to go on a stealing spree.

Dafuq is the Mexican GP doing in Switzerland? Time for a patch as soon as I'm able to do so!

Looks like I got the balance good though! And yeah, Life is probably the only team which will constantly DNQ in this mod, unless you change their engine.

What, is there a Swiss track that's called the Mexican GP, or a Mexican track that's called the Swiss GP?

The race is held in Mexico City (as the screen tells us) on the Hermanos Rodriguez track, but for some reason it's showing the Swiss flag instead of the Mexican one! :P Probably just forgot to change a hex value after changing the locations of those two nationalities.

First of all, I want to apologize for the lack of pictures in this update. I kinda screwed up with the screenshots, so you'll have to actually read the text. ;)

There isn’t not much to do, before we head over to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix. So without further ado, let’s make the journey across the pond.

As usual we don't make it to the grid. But Giacomelli misses by just three seconds! Maybe I should even keep Giacomelli, because he seems to be worth his money. As for Brabham…

As for the race, there were no real surprises here. Tarquini wins in front of Johansson, and builds up his championship lead.

After the race, I look after some good personnel for next year. And look at this! Not only is the best assistant cheaper, but he’s also better than the actual designer. (** over 1/2* my current designer has) And since even **-personnel is expensive (At least the ones that are under contract with another F1 team), I’m going with my assistant here. The same goes with the mechanic department. As for the engineering and commercial department, I found some decent **-personnel from F3000, which are way cheaper than my current employees. So next year, I should save some more money. But for now, let’s go racing at Silverstone:

And this time, we miss the grid by some 15 seconds. At the race, Johannson wins this time, with Tarquini only coming in third. The ROTR should be Brabham here, because they finished three laps down on the last two positions of the race!

After the race, our bank balance says 566.032 $. A nice sum, but I don’t plan on spending it. With a bit of luck; I may rack up a million dollars before the end of the year. On the other hand, I could easily sack Gary Brabham and replace him with an equally horrible driver, but one that pays for his ride. But I’ll give him a race or two. And for now, let’s hop over to France for the next grand prix.

By now, I don't even need pictures to say that we didn't make the grid here (This time by "just" eight seconds). But worth mentioning should be Giovanna Amati, who also didn't qualify.

JJ Lehto wins this time at Paul Ricard, with Tarquini following on second.

Next up is a double-header in Germany. First, we’ll visit the Nürburgring, then the good old Hockenheimring. And I notices that, thanks to our newest sponsors, we made a whopping 110.000 $ profit! Maybe I should endure Brabham’s performance for the rest of the season, at least until I have more than a million dollars. It’s not like someone else is gonna be better than Brabham. At least someone who's willing to drive for Life.

We miss the grid this time by some 13 seconds. The race is similar to the race before. Lehto wins, with Tarquini coming in second. Said Tarquini is leading the championship by some 18 points over J.J. Letho. By now it should be clear that one has to beat Fondmetal and Onyx, in order to be at the front of the grid.

After Nürburgring however, we suffered from some setbacks. Our contract with Sasol was up, yet they weren’t willing to commit themselves to a continuation of our partnership. Thankfully, Hewlet-Packard was ready to take some sponsor space over, but not all. Maybe I’ll have to reconsider my plans to keep Brabham. But for now, let’s go to Hockenheim!

Not only do we miss the grid by more than 20 seconds (!), Coloni also doesn't qualify for the race. But as Andrea Moda and Brabham pulled out of the weekend, the race has to start with only 19 cars on the grid. Which is once again won by Lehto over Tarquini. One wonders, how long Tarquini can keep his championship lead by just finishing in 2nd place.

Apparantly you don't like reading through text. But don't worry, the next update definitely has some pictures in it.

The Hungaroring is next on the schedule. Maybe we'll at least not-qualify with dignity.

Image

That's what I wouldn't call dignity! At least not what Brabham did on the track.

Image

Once again, no real surprises here.

After the race weekend, I've finally had enough of Brabham. So I sacked him, which only cost me 93.000 $. And I replaced him with this young fella:

Image

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny! But seriously, he'll do the remaining races in this season, and I'll get 2.000.000 $ as a result. That is friggin awesome! So, let's see how Deletraz does:

Image

*cries* Oh my god, what have I done wrong in my former life?

Not to derail this thread in any way, but as you're the mod maker, you have enough experience with the game. I assume you're not supposed to use team orders or to touch the tyre/fuel usage or the mentality? Because I've had this happen in Montreal even without touching the orders...

Either that or the rain is insanely imbalanced.

It's the latter, the drivers' wet weather skill has too much of an effect on the results especially in heavy rain conditions. That, and the conditions usually change during the session, which further mixes up the grid. Oddly enough, it seems that in this mod the chance of heavy rain and downpour during qualifying seems to be much higher than usual.

Okay then, I'll try to make it at least to the end of the year. So, let's get this over with:

As there is not much work to do before Monza, I just put in the right setup and head for the track.

Image

It get boring...

Image

What? Christmas Dinner wins? Great Scott!

But after the race, a little light at the end of the tunnel appears. We have researched the Lvl.1 turbo! And I mean, if I'm about to go down, why not do it with style!

Image

The turbo doesn't help! And on top of that, we're fined 10.000 $. Way to go at discouraging me from doing it again, FIA!

Image

Yeah, not much to say about that.
