F1 Hard Charger Award

Post by WaffleCat »

This award is simple. It is to credit those awful qualifiers who do well on race day. Those banzai overtakers. This is the Hard Charger award.Basically,it is who climbs his way up the order the most.Shared drives are not allowed and the Indy 500 does not count.

Race Winners
Britian-Johnny Claes
Monaco-Johnny Claes
Switzerland-Harry Schell
Belgium-Johnny Claes
France-Peter Whitehead
Italy-Phillipe Etancelin/Toulo de Graffenreid/Peter Whitehead

One thing Johnny Claes had was reliability. He finished 4 races,a feat only Farina,Fagioli and Rosier managed to achieve. While Peter Whitehead put on a late season charge,Claes hung on to take his first world championship. He only missed out on victory on races where he did not finish, apart from Switzerland, where Harry Schell got his only finish of the season.

Once again,it was a case of consistency paying off for Louis Rosier, though he left it until late to take the crown.Had he not overtaken more than 5 people at Pedrables,Reg Parnell would have been crowned champion.Instead,Rosier got the grit between his teeth and climbed up an impressive 13 positions to take his title.Defending champ Johnny Claes fought, but inevitably, his four finishes were not enough. Also,we have a complete reject in Nino Farina for now, having bad luck strike against him and cause him to go ona negative total two seasons in a row.

Don't you mean Guy Mairesse instead of Willy Mariesse?

Fixed the little blip.

Also,I have already done 1952.I tell you, loads of one-offs in Britian and Germany screwed my mind twice over. However,it also meant that one reject gained 22 positions in a race.Won't say which one...yet.

Johnny Claes is your first multiple champion!Probably the first time Claes won an alternative championship twice that is not rejectful(i.e Mediocrity award,Reverse Qualifying etc.).Claes' campaign was helped a lot by his win in Germany, which saw him climb 22 positions! That alone would have been good enough for second in the championship.Defending champion Rosier had a lackluster year, only able to finish one race.A candidate for Reject of the Year(if it existed then) was the Dutch Grand Prix, where few drivers finished as they barely changed places at all.

And just like that,Louis Rosier becomes the second double champion in four years. He had a straight victory, finishing all but two races and winning one of them as well.Once again,Ernst Klodwig manages to climb 17 positions in his home race to climb to fourth overall. The race everyone was watching, though, was to see who would come second in standings,Bira or Chiron.Rather funnily, they finished together on the same lap, with Bira just behind Chiron, meaning that Chiron would take second place in standings, making this a French-speaking Louis 1-2.

Roberto Mieres beat,no wait, demolished, hang on....steamrollered the field like Johnny Claes two seasons before.Take a massive win in a race, add a few more results, and you have your title right there. He climbed a massive 26 positions in Silverstone, just one more than Onofre Marimon managed in that same race. Some good results in Switzerland and Spain all but sealed that title.Defending champ Rosier had three retirements before putting a late season charge, but it still was too little, too late.

Maurice Trintingant takes the title in a rather wierd and tragic year.Pierre Levegh, who recorded a highest championship standing of 6th in 1951,died in the infamous Le Mans disaster.Only two drivers completed the full distance in Argentinia, and defending champion Roberto Mieres climbed higher than Fangio.Two-time champion Johnny Claes contracted tubercolosis during the year, and would eventually succumb to his illness.

Paco Godia blew his competition into the weeds with his performance this year.Despite missing out the first two races and failing to finish at Belgium,he got his act together and pulled of four stunning performances to get the top spot.Jack Fairman does solidly with a second despite participating in two races, and Ron Flockhart trashed the field at Monza to climb to third in his only race.

Also,two-time champion and always a frontrunner Louis Rosier was killed at Linas-Monthlery after the season finished. He ended his time in F1 with two championships and four race wins.

Masten Gregory not only becomes the first American to win the title, but also the first driver to not win a race yet still take the championship, pipping Jack Brabham at the final race where the Australian did not even start. This probably explains the low scores for this year.

Cliff Allison took the first title ever for a British driver, beating out Roy Salvadori in an almost epic battle.Emphasis on the almost.1955 champ Trintignant is also right up there as defending champ Gregory only finishes one race.

Also, note who shared the win in the Belgian Grand Prix :) .

What a season.Trintignant and Burgess only scored points in three races, but made the most out of them, with Roy Salvadori and defending 2-time champion Bruce Mclaren playing catchup.By the final race, however,McLaren and Salvadori were the only realistic contenders for the title. However,McLaren messed up his chances by qualifying 4th,meaning he could not gain the 6 places he needed to win the title unless the scorekeeper got a bit drunk and made him gain more places than he had.Unfortunately, the scorekeeper was sober and Mclaren failed to gain any positions at all, which left Salvadori, who qualified 12th,a clear shot to win the title.

While running second and even challenging for the lead in the final few laps, everybody thought that Salvadori would win the title. But,with just four laps remaining, his engine expired. You can just imagine the heartbreak happening right there and then.He even lost second place to Trintignant as rules state that tiebreakers will be resolved for first, second or third places at it involves giving out medals, and Trintignant won the opening race at Monaco while Salvadori failed to win anything.

The first South African driver to win the title,Tony Maggs outright dominated the field, climbing high whenever he finished, which was a lot of races. One oddity you might note is that Innes Ireland won the USA Grand Prix, yet still finished down below in the negatives. That was due to a horrifiying British Grand Prix where he finished 14 laps down after losing 13 positions, hence his negative total.

Another dominant season,de Beaufort seemingly blew everyone into the weeds, and then some. However,Jim Hall grabbed onto the fencepost and put it somke miraclous results of his own to stay in contention all the way to the end.In fact,Hall was leading the standings heading to South Africa, but failed to attend the race and the title was there for de Beaufort to take.Other notes is that 1957 champ Gregory finally takes his first ever win,and Maurice Trintignant proves to everyone that age in just a number as he is in the top 10 in standings for the 6th consecutive time, and his 8th total.

Giancarlo Baghetti looked to be in total control of his championship campaign, when he realised he could not go any further to USA and Mexico. He didn't seem stressed,as several title contenders missed the trip over the pond. One driver made it across, however, and that driver was Richie Ginther. He promptly won the title with just the right amount of positions gained at Mexico. This came as not that much of a suprised considering he ended every race in the season classified, thus boosting his rankings.Dan Gurney,on the other hand, wished he wasn't even on the grid.Late race failures and poor performances in terms of positions gained led to a terrible season overall.Other things of note include Tony Maggs gained his 25 positions in only two races and Maurice Trintignant claimed one last hurrah in his long career as he grabbed his fourth win in the French Grand Prix.

Unfortunately, reigning champion Carol Godin de Beaufort died when his Porsche crashed into the trees at Bergwerk during practice for the German Grand Prix.He had one championship and a record-tying 5 wins to his name.

I love it. Just a 'short holiday'. Wish I could just do that. I'd go everywhere!

Monaco-Jo Bonnier
Belgian-Lorenzo Bandini/Bruce McLaren/Jack Brabham
French-Jo Siffert/Graham Hill
British-Jo Siffert/Ian Raby
Dutch-Richard Attwood
German-Masten Gregory
Italian-Innes Ireland
USA-Pedro Rodriguez
Mexico-Richard Attwood

This time it was a case of consistency:Siffert's finishes versus Attwood's positions gained per race.It all came down to a final battle at Mexico, where Attwood needed to gain 6 positions on Siffert to win the title.Attwood did everything, climbing 11 positions in the race.Unfortunately,Siffert did just enough, literally,to take home the coveted championship.Jo Bonnier was 3rd through sheer consistency.

Also, the South African Grand Prix had more winners than floors in a skyscraper, with Siffert,Paul Hawkins and two one-offs matching each other while staying ahead of the field.

British-Chris Lawrence/John Taylor
Dutch-John Taylor
German-Graham Hill/Jochen Rindt
Italian-Bob Bondurant/Geki
USA-Peter Arundell

This was a title almost no one expected. After the first two Grand Prix,it looked like Bob Bondurant's finish in the Monaco Grand Prix, one of only four, could propel him forward. Then John Taylor scored three straight wins on the trot, looking comfortable to take the title.Unfortunately,he was killed at the German Grand Prix, and hopes swept in Bondurant's favour after his shared win with the amusingly named "Geki" in Italy. However,Peter Arundell put in two storming final races where Bondurant was disqualified and retired to take the championship by 5 positions.Arundell dedicated his championship to Taylor, who many people believe should have won the championship.

Race Winners
South Africa-Bob Anderson
Monaco-Pedro Rodriguez
Dutch-Ludovico Scarfiotti
Belgian-Jo Siffert/Bob Anderson
French-Jackie Stewart/Pedro Rodriguez
British-Guy Ligier
German-Jo Bonnier
Canadian-Jo Bonnier/Jack Brabham/Mike Fisher
Italian-Jacky Ickx
Mexico-Jean-Pierre Beltoise
USA-Jonathan Williams/Guy Ligier

This was one very close championship battle. The top 5 always seemed to be in contention one way or another.Pedro Rodriguez took advantage of starting early, and Spence and Siffert followed suit.Ligier start just before mid-season with Bonnier starting just after. With three races to go,their standings looked like this:

1.Pedro Rodriguez-28 pos.
=.Guy Ligier-28 pos.
3.Jo Siffert-22 pos.
4.Mike Spence-21 pos.
5.Jo Bonnier-16 pos.

Siffert,Spence and Bonnier were the only ones to score going into the final round in Mexico,Rodriguez's home turf. So,going into the final race, things looked like this:

1.Jo Siffert-30 pos.
2.Pedro Rodiguez-28 pos.
=.Mike Spence-28 pos.
=.Guy Ligier-28 pos.
5.Jo Bonnier-25 pos.

Siffert could have easily won it,but his engine overheated on the 59th lap, meaning that he would lose two positions and still be classified. This left the final six laps a chance for Ligier,Rodriguez or Spence to win, with Bonnier being the underdog. However, with his low qualifying spot,Ligier could afford to finish last and still win it,provided Spence nor Rodriguez finished 3rd or 5th respectively.Rodriguez tried desperately to catch Spence for the title, but it was to no avail,as Guy Ligier wins his first championship by simply making it to the end of the race.

One more note of interest:Jonathan Williams wins his only race in a Ferrari. If only Enzo spotted his talent....

French-Vic Elford
British-Jacky Ickx
Germany-Jack Brabham
Italian-Jo Bonnier/Piers Courage/Jean-Pierre Beltoise
Canadian-Vic Elford
USA-Jo Siffert
Mexican-Jo Bonnier

Jean-Pierre Beltoise was very inconsistent. He had very high scores in some races, but had ghastly scores in his other races which almost allowed the consistent Rodriguez to catch up.Unfortunately for him,he misses out on yet another title byu a small margin. If someone had a most positions gained per race average,it would go to Bonnier who amassed all his positions in just three races alone.

And,no,Chris Amon hasn't won a race yet. He's even at the bottom of the standings for the second time in three years.

Bruce McLaren is this championship's first ever triple champion, where he finshed all but one race in which he started.Defending champ Beltoise tried the consistent strategy, but it didn't exactly pay off but second and first in your first two full seasons is enough to make anyone happy, especially Beltoise.Another trend over the Sixties is an ever decreasing but ever more competitive field of drivers.

Stats over the first two decades of the sport are next.

Holy son of a sea faring cockroach,Graham Hill did absolutely everything he could've done if your only finished 5 races.Scoring double-digits in every race he finished,he led the championship for all races bar one, which John Love won.Rolf Stommelen gave Hill a close run thing, but it was not to be.

Also, there were two sad deaths.Jochen Rindt died while leading another championship, which he won posthumously. The other sad death was that of defending champion Bruce McLaren, who died testing a Can-Am car at Goodwood. He was only able to finish one race,Spain,in which he gained 9 positions. He won a total of three championships with a record eight wins.

Two words:Fittipaldi choked. He would have been leaving the US with the title, but instead lost three positions in the final two races.Mind you,he was on 40 positions gained heading into Canada, but lost three positions, gifting Surtees an almost guaranteed victory when he ran slow enough not to be classified at Watkins Glen.Instead,Surtees almost choked up too.He finished last among those classified, losing 4 positions, while Ronnie Peterson finished third, tying on positions with him but losing on countback. Also, had Peter Gethin gained one more position,he would've had claimed the title for himself.Instead,he had to settle for third.

Also,I accidentally misspelt one driver's name, but the mistake was too good to take out IMO,so I left it in for you all to laugh at.

French-Graham Hill
British-Rolf Stommelen
German-Mike Beuttler
Austria-Jean-Pierre Beltoise
Italian-Mike Beuttler/Ronnie Peterson
Canada-Henri Pescarolo/Graham Hill/Carlos Pace
United States of American-Ronnie Peterson

You have to feel sorry for Niki Lauda. He wins 3 out of the first five races and his points total could've won him the championship in any other year. But not this year.Instead,Graham Hill took advantage of finishing high and finishing often to eclipse Lauda.Performance of the season, however, goes to Ronnie Peterson for being able to gain 22 positions in USA,tying third on the most positions ever gained in a race with Johnny Claes.

Race Winners

British-Mike Beuttler
Dutch-Gijs van Lennep
German-Jackie Oliver
Austrian-Gijs van Lennep
Italian-David Purley
Canada-Howden Ganley
USA-Mike Beuttler/Jacky Ickx

Average this Season:21.9 Positions Gained

Mike Beuttler had won the championship with the most amount of wins ever by a driver in a season with 5.Granted,back in 1950,to do that, you had to finish almost every single race bar one.Still, winning one-third of the races isn't that bad.Andrea de Adamich could have won as he got his total positions total after just six races, but the massive pileup at Silverstone ended his career. And,although we saw some of the best of the best,we saw the rejectfulest of the rejectfulest as Denny Hulme failed to capitalise on good qualifying performances with a terribly slow race, causing him to get the new record for least positions gained in a season:minus 32.

Also,Liechenstein wins a race!

No,this is not a typo. No,the little voice in your head is not joking. And no,I wouldn't play such an elaborate prank to tell you that Graham Hill just smashed the record into oblivion and beyond. He was also almost twice the number of positions gained over second place Brambilla. This championship also ties Hill with McLaren in most championships won.How did Tom Belso and Rikky von Opel win(second win for von Opel) i have no bathplugging idea.
