Kerrang! is the best radio station in the country, although its only available in the West Midlands AFAIK.

Anyway, today i've gone fairly old school for my standards, listened through the whole of Pills Thrills and Bellyaches from the Happy Mondays. Class album all the way through, although there's only 10 songs.

I'm not keen enough on rock to listen to Kerrang, but I know that it is a good station.

Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches - good grief, that came out the year I went to university, which makes me feel OLD. And that Blur song you linked to (which is one of my favourites by them, btw, shame Damon's voice has completely gone now!) reminds me of playlisting it at the University Radio Station!!

Video game music, eh? I see your weird... whatever that was, and I raise you Chris Hülsbeck. For those of you who don't know who he is, I can sum up his best work in one word... Turrican. That's the tune you're greeted with (it's called Desert Rocks) in the first level of Turrican II, and if you're wondering why put such a marvellous composition right at the beginning of the game instead of saving it for a later level - this way, every player gets to hear it. And this (called Bionic Action) is how the player is greeted in the first level of Turrican 3 (a.k.a. Super Turrican or Mega Turrican if it was ported to one of the consoles of the time). Also, there's Chris Hülsbeck's self-remix from the official soundtrack if you prefer, and weirdly, there's a version of this same track made via a C64 SID chip that featured on the unofficial Turrican 32K, and which includes and extra bit at about three minutes in that doesn't feature on any of the 16-bit games, or the OST version. No idea why, but I'd have left it in.

Incidentally, the ringtone on my phone alternates between the C64 version of Bionic Action, and Final Fantasy IV's victory fanfare. Usually it's FFIV, though, because getting a call happens once in a blue moon and it always seems like a victory.

I had a Definitely Maybe shirt a few years ago...I think it's just disappeared though...

I'm looking forward to a lot of stuff that should be out soon, for example Biffy Clyro's new album, and John Frusciante's new LP.

I'm rather looking forward to Muse's new album too; it's getting a bit of stick for the new direction they've gone in but hopefully it will be rather good. Chris Wolstenholme's healthy again now, which should breathe life back into them.

Johnny Claes was an accomplished jazz musician.

Damon Hill plays the guitar, and was in a school band called "Sex, Hitler, and the Hormones".

Hahaha, these I can maybe understand, it's current music, many people feel compelled to immediately show dislike for new songs and genres that appear, you only have to look at some of the Muse fanboys getting their knickers in a twist about the new stuff they're coming out with to see that, but as far as I'm concerned I don't bother with the artists' stereotypes - if it's a song I like, I'll listen to it.

And Nickelback to boot as well.

But this I can't stand at all. I honestly cannot believe the number of people who seem to show such a hideous aversion to Nickleback. East Londoner, if you wouldn't mind, I'd like one good reason why you don't like Nickleback, and it can't be a load of waffle about them being mainstream, because that's a pathetic reason and just shows why the rock/metal community has gone right up its own arse in the past 10-15 years or so. Classic Rock is a well-respected magazine, they constantly harp on about the lack of new bands making it big in the past decade or so, yet when faced with one which has, they see fit to make a mockery of them for no real reason. It's hilarious, because I've yet to see a real decent reason why so many people like to sh*t over what is fundamentally a very successful band.

I don't see why I can't dislike Nickelback...the reason is like variety in my songs. Nickelback have cracked out the same thing for years. I like bands or artists that explore different areas in each album, that's just my personal preference. The mainstream thing doesn't bother me at all, as I'm a big RHCP fan who have become one of the most accessible bands around. Their gradual transformation from funk-punk to alternative over the past 30 years (yes, the Chili Peppers are 30 years old next year) made each album different. And I like that.

Nickelback aren't really my bag at all. I've given them a chance, and I just don't get on with Chad Kroeger's not-so-dulcet vocals or the repetitive song format. It's cool if you like them, but I don't see why I have to.

The main reason why I dislike Nickelback is, basically I don't like them. I find them boring, deriative and rather crass. There's hardly been any progression from their breakout album in 2001. Now, some bands don't need to progress too much from their original sound (good examples being Oasis and The Strokes) as they don't repeat themselves on each album, and still sound good. But if I didn't know better, I'd think all Nickelback songs came from the same album. (that's probably a really crap reason...).

Mainstream doesn't bother me one bit. Some of my favourite bands (Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Foo Fighters, White Stripes) can all be considered mainstream. They've all become popular, and shift bucketloads of albums, but they've haven't become boring and churning out the same album all the time. They've pushed themselves to evolve and change, or to consolodate what they do best.

Plus the fact that over the autumn last year, I'd constantly hear When We Stand Together. On EVERY bloody music channel and all over the radio. Awful, awful song.

I will admit though, I did like Rockstar when it was first released. This was years before I discovered the Stone Roses and Britpop.


Now, enough of this silly debate over opinions. I'm absolutely addicted to Jake Bugg. He is a star of the future. You may have heard this song over the summer.

Both good accounts, the repetitive format is something that I'm not too fond of either. I certainly wouldn't describe myself as a massive fan of them or anything like that, though I like quite a few of their songs that must be said. I just don't understand why they've received so much grief when as far as the rock/metal genre is concerned, there has been very little to shout about in terms of proper mainstream success for many years now. The bands that do manage to achieve this kind of success, not just limited to Nickleback, have tended to be on the end of some pretty nasty criticism from naiive fanboys who couldn't tell you the difference between some early Pink Floyd and Whitesnake. I think it's a real shame that in the genre's own circles, these sort of bands just don't get the recognition they deserve. It's like East Londoner slagging off Oasis because they were all mainstream whilst Ocean Colour Scene or whoever else were less so during the whole Britpop era, it just doesn't make sense.
