I wouldn't be so sure about that. Hamilton would have to be aware of the speculation suggesting Mercedes will withdraw, wholly or partially, in the very near future. There is simply no way he would entertain any idea of joining them if he thought that was a realistic outcome. Sure, you could make the case that he's simply using that to bluff McLaren, but if Hamilton could find out that Mercedes intends to withdraw, then McLaren can find out, too. And if they do, then his bargaining position is significantly weaker. So Hamilton would have to have a reasonable belief that the team will stay in the sport. Indeed, if they sign him, it's a statement of their itnentions to stay.
Likewise, Hamilton would have to be aware of the performance issues at Mercedes. But look at their development schedule this year - they've done virtually nothing. The tests at Magny-Cours saw their first real upgrade at a time when Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari have all introduced at least two major aero packages already. Naturally, this begs the question of where Mercedes' resources are going. I suspect they're gearing up for 2014, trying to replicate their success in 2009 when they had a monster of a car. If they can convince Hamilton that the long-term outlook is bright and sunny and stable, I think he'd be very tempted by that.
