F1RGP2C Apertura: 1997

Borrowing this idea from dinizintheoven and Adx_Wales, here are the 1997 Apertura results.

Seeding:
1. Daniel Moreno
2. Andrew Spokes
3. John Zimmer
4. Tom Douglas
5. Leonhard von Gottorp
6. Damon Cannon
7. Kazuhiko Takagi
8. Rory McAllister
9. Pieter Kickert
10. James Davies
11. Masta Valsattis
12. Gio van Dycke
13. Pablo da Silva
14. Bernhard Pech
15. Reiko Megumi
16. Jorg Scrattenheim

Round 1

1 Daniel Moreno (DNQ) vs. 16 Jorg Scrattenheim (DNF)
2 Andrew Spokes (2nd) vs. 15 Reiko Megumi (DNF)
3 John Zimmer (4th) vs. 14 Bernhard Pech (DNF)
4 Tom Douglas (8th) vs. 13 Pablo da Silva (3rd)
5 Leonhard von Gottorp (DNF) vs. 12 Gio van Dycke (DNF)
6 Damon Cannon (5th) vs. 11 Masta Valsattis (DNF)
7 Kazuhiko Takagi (DNF) vs. 10 James Davies (DNF)
8 Rory McAllister (1st) vs. 9 Pieter Kickert (DNF)

Round 2

16 Jorg Scrattenheim (DNF) vs. 8 Rory McAllister (13th)
13 Pablo da Silva (6th) vs. 12 Gio van Dycke (DNF)
2 Andrew Spokes (DNF) vs. 10 James Davies (DNF)
3 John Zimmer (DNF) vs. 6 Damon Cannon (5th)

Round 3

8 Rory McAllister (DNF) vs. 13 Pablo da Silva (10th)
10 James Davies (1st) vs. 6 Damon Cannon (6th)

Round 4
10 James Davies (2nd) vs. 13 Pablo da Silva (11th)

James Davies wins despite not finishing in the first two races. Pablo da Silva's improbable run through the field came to an end in Round 4.

Meanwhile, I'm proposing a F1RGP2C Predicament Predictions. Predictions would look like this:

Code: Select all

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Pole position:
Fastest lap:
First retirement:
Reject of the race:
Golden Papaya:
DNQ:

Points system will be as follows:
2 for correct finishing positions
1 for "right driver, wrong position" (what is it, actually? :?)
1 for correct fastest lap and pole position
3 for correct ROTR prediction
2 for correct Golden Papaya (near-miss/7th position) prediction
2 for correct DNQ prediction
-4 for late submission or late changes (when Tristan posts qualifying times, it is the deadline)

Thoughts? :)

Race Review:
The race was mind-numbingly dull. Tom Douglas led from pole but his two-stop strategy was unable to overcome Moreno's one-stopper which enabled Daniel Moreno to take his second win of the season.

Positives:
Daniel Moreno: Moreno rebounded from last week's disappointment with a clinical victory in Monaco. Although a lot of the credit must go to his pit strategy, Moreno's drive was impressive and he was able to keep Douglas behind him late in the race. It wasn't Senna/Mansell 1992 but it was close enough. Moreno now takes the outright lead in the championship from Davies who only managed 5th.

Tom Douglas: Somehow, Douglas hasn't been able to grace the top step of the podium since Brazil last year. However, it is apparent that this won't be the case for long if Ferrari can put it all together for one race.

Andrew Spokes: Solid recovery for Spokes after last week's mechanical problem.

Kazuhiko Takagi: Takagi can't seem to finish anywhere other than fourth as this is his fourth consecutive fourth place finish. Funnily enough, Takagi now lies fourth in the championship just by the virtue of consistency. It is yet to be seen whether he will mount a legitimate title challenge.

Davies, Cannon and Valsattis: The three standouts from the early-season running all drove quite well. No mistakes were made.

Jorg Scrattenheim: Scrattenheim was running in fifth for most of the race and was up to fourth after Kickert retired. Unfortunately, Arrows' poor reliability struck and Scrattenheim was forced into the pits with an electrical problem on Lap 67. He dropped to eighth.

Ben Fleet: Although he retired from the race again, Fleet made up six places at the start and was running in front of the DAMS cars while he was on-track. Stewart's next goal has to be getting a car to the finish.

Negatives:
Pieter Kickert: The curse of the second Williams driver continues unabated.

John Zimmer: He was off the pace of Spokes all weekend. Is he officially washed-up like James Davies claims or is he just on a cold streak?

Stewart: Their reliability must improve.

Leonhard von Gottorp and Miko Fakkinen: Okay, parking your car in the middle of the circuit is not a good way to avoid a collision. Penalties!

Gauthier: Samael Meerwick and Lawrence Tucker have usurped the Volga pairing as the worst driver lineup in the field. Admittedly, the chassis is terrible but the drivers are compounding the problem massively. Tucker had an embarrassing crash at Tabac early on in the race and Meerwick was a lap behind van Dycke's Minardi. Therefore, Gauthier has won Reject of the Race for Monaco.

Penalties:
+1 to Leonhard von Gottorp for parking his car in a bad spot
+1 to Miko Fakkinen for parking his car in an unsafe position

Leaders:
Tom Douglas: 1-28
Daniel Moreno: 29-36
Pieter Kickert: 37-50
Daniel Moreno: 51-

Unpopular opinion time. I don't really like the fact that Predicament Predictions seem to be sprouting out of just about every fictional series. It works in real life, but I don't think it does in our universe, and all it does is clog up threads. :|

Yeah, can we at least move the predictions to another thread?

Besides, why would you want to go toa Williams when they're already losing Newey and are rumoured to lose their works engine deal with all the talk I've been hearing of Renault pulling out of the sport at the end of the year.

Ligier will sign up Tyrrell's sacked drivers as test-drivers, if they got nowhere to go.

Well, you're only allowed to pick one. I'll allow it because McFry is currently on Gauthier.

Also, qualifying results will be posted on Monday so if you want to submit predictions, please get them in by then.

Don Rennis wrote:Rory my man, we're getting the guys to look into a solution for all the problems. So far, all we can tell is that the failures aren't related in any way, shape or form which I guess is a good thing in that it's not a chronic issue. Besides, why would you want to leave when you've already won a race this year and we've got Newey designing next year's car? Especially to drive for those clowns at Williams which, from what I've heard in the paddock, are about to lose their works engine deal with what I've been hearing about Renault pulling out at the end of the year.

And Jimmy, I love how you've been driving this year but could you please stop getting yourself into trouble with the press all the time? I mean, a competitive spirit is good and all but the last thing I need is to deal with some lawsuit because someone else has taken what you're saying completely out of context.
