No upgrades are allowed I'm afraid until after the Brazilian Grand Prix! The interval is every 3 races...

And the next race, South African Grand Prix, will start at around 8:00pm GMT today, after the Prost GP race has finished! The chatroom may be open before then so check this thread for details!

Race cancelled due to a glitch with the track :( Cars were unrealistically spinning into the barrier due to a funny kerb. PI'll try and fit the race in on Sunday on a version of Kyalami that actually works!

1980 South African Grand Prix - Kyalami, 61 laps

Well, I'll be adopting the Positives/Negatives style of reviews for the rest of the year...

Positives

Harvey Jones - A decent qualifying effort saw him line up 6th on the grid, 7 tenths off pole, but even so the win suprised everybody. Well, me and Nuppiz, who spectacularly predicted that Nurmester would qualify roughly half asecond of the grid (0.421 seconds to be precise), and also predicted a Harvey Jones win. Still, not that we should be suprised - Harvey Jones of course took his first victory in the attrition hit 1979 European Grand Prix, a great drive around the Brands circuit that was a shining light in between a mountain of retirements. Anyway, back to this race, Harvey worked his way up to 3rd at the start, and when the leading Scheckter and McAllister encountered the slow Prost, Depault and Keegan at the back, remained glued to their gearboxes. Harvey wouldn't get by McAllister till they came to lap Villeneuve, and an overdefensive Emerson Fittipaldi allowed Jones to slip past Scheckter. With 10 to go, he had a 3.1 second lead...which he improved to 4.5 seconds over the most powerful car on the grid.Masterclass.

Williams - Callum McAllister took pole, the 8th of a two year career, with Scheckter behind Laffite in 3rd. Good qualifying has become expected of the Williams team, but some races have saw them slip back in the race. Actually, starting 1st and 3rd is a dramatic improvement over last year's effort which saw both drivers wallowing on the midfield. McAllister and Scheckter quickly went 1-2 in the first 5 laps, swapped positions behind the slow Alfa of Prost in last position on lap 15, and were 1-2 before Jones passed McAllister and finally Scheckter. The Honda engines made the finish, both of them actually, for the first time since Honda's entry into the sport which is an acheivement in itself. McAllister dropped back slightly in the last 10 laps, allowing both Brabhams through after a 'burn from the stern' approach, but brought the car home in 5th to remain in the lead of the driver's championship.

McLaren - Last time out, the British team qualified several seconds off the pace, and just scraped into the points due to attrition. This weekend saw a marked improvement for the team, with Gulliame Gauthier qualifying 7th, less than a second off of the pole time, with Daly 10th. Gauthier's and Daly's impressive pace continued in the race however, staying ahead of the previously faster Audis, Merzarios and Ferraris. A long battle with Bellof's faster Shadow defined the race, but high finishing rates among the leading pack denied McLaren the chance of points. The only question mark still hanging over the team by the chequered flag is wheter or not the team will be able to maintain the pace.

Negatives

Beppe Gabbiani - The Italian pay driver looked like he was going to impress this weekend, before a show of complete stupdity earnt him a 1 race ban and Reject of the Race. A decent qualifying saw him qualify a whole second faster than his team mate, and he was up to 13th position on lap 2 before he suffered a gearbox issue that saw him Hans-Joachimed, err sorry, stuck in 3rd gear. Now any other driver would pull into the pits and retire, but Beppe struggled on for a further 3 laps. He then proceeded to hold up Callum McAllister and Jody Scheckter, who were running 1-2, holding up Jody enough to allow McAllister to have a 5 second lead. The blag flag was shown to him on lap 7, and for 3 laps he did not stop, earning him disqualification from the event and a one race ban that comes free with all DSQs. Oh, and to make things worse for Restov, de Angelis retired with brake failure on lap 5. Boo, and if you will, hiss.

Jean-Pierre Jabouille - Jean-Pierre could only manage 16th on the grid while team-mate Carlos lined up 5th, and struggled to move past slower cars. While battling with the two Audis and Brian Henton in the midfield on lap 14, he managed to pass Henton, who was behind the Audis, into turn 1, but put the power down too early and span into the wall, ending his race.

Audi
- The pace was decent this weekend, like last- battling with the Merzarios and Henton's Shadow was the order of the day. But, engine failures on both cars within a lap of each other will worry the team, as the German marque have yet to have a car finish the race.

20:08   YourHostPasta   The Scheckter-McAllister gap is staying at a steady rate, there must be team orders involved
20:08   EnzoOsella   "I hear we're going to get turbo engines next season. Plus, we might have a small edge on the more technical circuits this season due to not having turbo lag in our engines"
20:09   YourHostPasta   TT ne last question Thomas, do you think Lotus can mount a title challenge this year/

20:11   EnzoOsella   "They've got a solid driver pairing, and the chassis seems to be good. It really epends on the reliability of their Renault turbos."

20:12   YourHostPasta   Remember Alan is out

20:13   YourHostPasta   Is that there is a group of 5 cars, within 2 seconds of each other

20:17   YourHostPasta   As both Audis retire within a lap of each other!
20:17   YourHostPasta   Bothe ngines failed
20:18   YourHostPasta   Scheckter's lapped Villeneuve, and is now behind Fittipaldi,w ho's battling with Henton
20:18   YourHostPasta   Harvey Jones also finds himself in 2nd position
20:18   YourHostPasta   18 runners
20:18   YourHostPasta   Jones is closing on Scheckter now...
20:18   YourHostPasta   but Villeneuve's between the two
20:19   YourHostPasta   And McAllister's right behind him!
20:19   EnzoOsella   TN: "Enzo, am I wrong or are those some German cursewords that are being shouted next to our pits?"
20:19   YourHostPasta   Jones laps Vill;eneuve,
20:19   YourHostPasta   Attacks Scheckter but Henton gets in the way
20:20   YourHostPasta   Hneton moves over now..
20:20   YourHostPasta   Jones is right behind Scheckter, with Fittpaldi's Merzario in front
20:20   YourHostPasta   This is interesting
20:21   YourHostPasta   McAllister is stuck behind Henton...
20:21   YourHostPasta   As Jones has closed on ScheckterFittpaldi's being very defensive...
20:21   YourHostPasta   But Scheckter and Jones are through
20:21   YourHostPasta   But McAllister can't get by
20:21   YourHostPasta   POiquet closed up in fourth now as well
20:22   YourHostPasta   He could still win the race!
20:22   YourHostPasta   McAllister past Fittpalid, but so did Henton
20:22   YourHostPasta   Patrese's Arrows conks out
20:23   YourHostPasta   But Scheckter's caught Depault for second time...
20:23   YourHostPasta   Now, if Jones can get past Prost quickly..
20:24   YourHostPasta   Which he hasn't
20:24   YourHostPasta   Has now thoug

20:24   YourHostPasta   Scheckter left the door open at the last turn!
20:24   EnzoOsella   wooo!
20:25   YourHostPasta   Scheckter tries to go down the inside at T1, but Jones shuts the door!
20:25   YourHostPasta   He's still got to get past Depault now, with Scheckte ron his tail...
20:25   YourHostPasta   JONES AND SCHECKTER SIDE BY SIDE!
20:26   YourHostPasta   THE HONDA'S GOT MORE GRUNT
20:26   YourHostPasta   Scheckter leads again, but STILL behind Depault!
20:26   YourHostPasta   McAllister and Piquet are now right behind
20:26   YourHostPasta   HJones looks down the inside, but Jody shuts the door
20:27   YourHostPasta   Lap 51 across the line10 to go!
20:27   YourHostPasta   Jones goesfor it!
20:27   YourHostPasta   ABut can't make it stick
20:27   YourHostPasta   The leaders are seperated by just 1 second!#But Schekcter slips a little wide

20:28   YourHostPasta   If Jones can lap Depault down the main straight he could win the race!
20:28   YourHostPasta   Jones pulls out to lap Depault

20:31   YourHostPasta   He muscled his way past McAllister, there was slight contact
20:31   EnzoOsella   I guess I should put the lottery ticket in, first I guessed Nurmester's qualifying time almost spot on and now Harvey Jones is leading...
20:31   YourHostPasta   Haha!
20:32   YourHostPasta   Just 6 laps to go now, Jones leads bu 3.4 seconds..

Why hasn't Ferrari been given ROTR? Qualifies 23rd and 24th and both are nowhere in sight for the race. Incredulous!

Eddie Cheever will be replaced with Teo Fabi for the next race. There is just no excuse in being four seconds slower than anyone else!

Audi find the reliability of the engine concerning - a real shame as we are confident that the power produced by these engines are among the best on the grid! Unfortunatly, there is a limited amount of work we can do until after the 3rd race - so I think it is a case of keeping fingers crossed, wrap the engine like a present using Gaffa-Tape and make sure that Niki Lauda and Marc Surer use their best abilities to make the finish line!

You guessed correctly. Valentino Nichhi will make his F1 debut in Brazil.

Meanwhile pasta, are there any decent drivers that are unsigned? I signed up Elio to lead the team forward, but seeing as he's being outshone by Beppe Gabianni of all people, he might be replaced if he doesn't pick the pace up.

Well, of the real F1 drivers that didn't compete in alternate 1979 you've got Clay Regazzoni and Patrick Depailler. Of course you can also bring in a real-life driver earlier than they did in real life (like Stefan Bellof), provided they are a plausible age and have had a plausible amount of experience. :)

Osella would be willing to lend Teo Fabi - we can always replace Eddie Cheever with Siegfried Stohr instead.

Because Gabbiani's actions were more rejectful! Ferrari can be added as a negative as well.

Quite indeed, the Ferrari Turbo works team being soundfully beaten by the RAM March Lotus Ferrari Fiat customer V12 Super Aguri team. (it's just RAM March, really)

If anybody needs a driver: Brancatelli is available and he did a decent job last year for RAM. Not winner material (unlike Lammers) but a good consistent points scorer.

Sure!

Osella is happy to lend Teo Fabi to Restov, and we'd also like to announce a private test of our own at Monza. Due to lack of funds it will be for one day only, with Eddie Cheever and Siegfried Stohr being compared to each other.

If possible, JLD will run a test at Hockenheim. Keegan will run both days in one car while Depault and Bleekemolen will share the second car. We'd also like to invite Audi along to make a complete Volkswagen test session.

I was just thinking - to make the driver market fairer in future seasons, perhaps we should start using the contract method pioneered by Flaschenpost, now being used by Samster in Alternate BTCC, in future. Driver ownership doesn't really work in the context of real life drivers...

I second that notion but on the basis that I can keep that clown Depault on as a test driver or something like that.

Audi accept JLD's invite and would like to use Jochen Mass to test the car on all days. We will be focusing on reliability and trying to work out how a team using customer engines of the same design can make their engines last the whole race - whilst ours keep on detonating! :P

Edit: @ Pasta - Any chance of doing a race report with screen shots? I enjoyed being able to see clips of the cars during the highlights of the race! :)
