BBC Sports Personality of the Year is... not Jenson Button

Post by watka »

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year award ceremony has just finished and the award, against the bookie's predictions, went to Ryan Giggs. The way I see it, the only reason they didn't give it to Button was because they had to be consistent following Hamilton's non-win last season (he debatably had a better season). Giggs is a great player, but last season he was no better than he's ever been before (although that is an achievement in itself at his age).

Strange version of The Chain with Eddie Jordan on the drums.

Don't really see why Giggs won it, bit of meh award overall, but it doesn't help when they award it to past it football players.

Jordan's not even a great drummer, it sounded bad.

Just thinking, the Captain'll be furious. He was probably so confident that he saved his money to vote for Joe to win on the X-Factor.

:o SINNER! If HWNSNBM was a Man U fan there would be a flaming papaya heading your way as I type this
Though if it were a Man U player to win SP09 I'd have chosen Scholes instead.

And as soon as Button was announced runner up I gave the two-finger salute to the TV

I think it's pretty clear that HWNSNBM supports these guys.

Edit: Don't know what's wrong with that link.

It seemed to be a public vote, from what I could tell. I only watched a bit.

In which case, football players or boxers are almost always going to win.

Not necessarily.

In the last fews years Jonny Wilkinson, Zara Phillips (who?), Freddie Flintoff, Kelly Holmes and Chris Hoy have won it.

Well, we Finns have chosen the F1 WDC as the Finnish Sports Personality of the year 2 times out of four, With Rosberg and Häkkinen 98.

But atleast they've gotten beaten by actually deserving athletes. Häkkinen 99 by Mika Myllylä who won 3 gold medals at the 1999 Skiing World Championships and Räikkönen by Tero Pitkämäki, who won the Javelin Gold medal in 2007 world championships.

(fun fact: The only Rally-driver to be chosen as the Finnish Sports Personality of the year is Juha Kankkunen in 93. So much for Finland being a rallying country :P)

BTW, thats Räikkönen with two K's and two N's. Not Raikonnen (Raikkonen is fine if you have no umlauts though)

 WTF? I need to travel back in time and tamper with the results so Marcus Gronholm gets the title he deserves :D

I think the only thing stopping Hamilton winning it in 07 and 08 was that F1 was on the ITV and not BBC,
Phil Taylor the darts player has more personality than ANY of the people nominated, but his sport is on SKY.

If there was an un-TV linked british awards THAT would be the only fair way around it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not darts!!!

Giggs was a good winner - Button didn't get it becuase he had such a clear car advantage early in the year. Hamilton hasn't for the last couple of years because in 2007 there was a lot of negative PR about his move away from the UK and last year was an Olympic year and what Chris Hoy acheived was staggering. I think for an F1 driver to win it now they would need to win multiple titles.

Hill and Mansell won it cause they won their title being alot older plus mansell could of won the title 3 more times and was unlucky and Hill twice but both won it just once and thats why they got the BBC award plus they seem to be more popular than Button and Hamltion which seems weird but oh well

Yeah, both Mansell and Hill coulda won the title plenty more times, if it wasn't for the fact there were better teams and drivers competing against them.

Actually, even Deletraz or Lavaggi coulda won a few titles if it wasn't for the better drivers and teams so... Kinda moot point eh? :P
