Re: Rantbox
Red Bull is now starting to seriously annoy me with all the unnecessary and constant whining about this year's tyres. We all know the tyres are rubbish and Pirelli went too far, but Red Bull petulant behaviour about this is not called for.

can't agree more. They were complaining a lot during the Malaysia GP, especially after qualy, and yet they finished comfortably 1-2....

I hope Pirelli's change of compounds for Bahrain wasn't because of their whining. Giving it their way would only have an adverse effect, resulting in more whining.

Is it just me or does it annoy anyone else that Pirelli have labelled their hard tyres orange and it's not a natural colour progression? It should go white/yellow/orange/red, not orange/white/yellow/red.

It looks like, although Pirelli are now changing the construction of the hard tyre for the Spanish GP onwards so it is now closer to their 2012 specification tyre, that Red Bull are still pushing for changes to be made to the tyres. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/22290968
To be fair to them, though, although they are the most vocal, it looks like they are not the only team asking for changes to be made - Hembery has claimed that eight of the teams are supporting their decision not to change the tyres for the rest of the season. Now, Hembery hasn't specified who the teams that are not supporting his position are - now, Red Bull is accounted for and there are indications in the German press that Mercedes are probably the second team pushing for changes, but I'd be curious to know who that third team was.
CoopsII wrote:Coulthard gave a more balanced opinion in his piece.
Anderson's take on the affair is also fairly neutral too - if anything, it seems to be slightly siding with Perez given that he says that the team probably should have asked Button to let Perez through in order to maximise their potential points haul at the end of the race, since Perez looked like the much quicker driver at that point in the race. Given how Perez caught Webber and Hamilton at the end of the race, it's entirely plausible that the fighting between Button and Perez cost the team 5th place - equally, as Anderson points out, the two of them could have taken each other out of the race entirely.

Apparently they made the decisions after Malaysia because the word was they wouldn't have been able to produce enough soft tyres in time for both China and Bahrain. And since the mediums are used for almost every event on the calender, they probably had a few hundred spare sets available for Bahrain instead.

I don't recall seeing it mentioned here before, and when you think about it the designation is a little odd, is it not?
I cannot be sure, but I think it is simply a holdover from earlier times that has persisted because it was a convenient way of designating the tyre that was expected to be the preferred option for the race, which was shortened to "option tyre".

I thought that it was used because the "prime" tyre is the ideal tyre for the race, whilst the "option" is the optional one, or the one less suited to the conditions.

I'm quite frankly sick and tired of so-called F1 "fans" moaning about the tyres/strategy. A good number are moaning about there being four pitstops for most cars yesterday. I guarantee most of these fans were moaning after the Monaco race last year, because most people only did one stop. I feel sorry for Pirelli, they'll get bashed regardless of what they do.

THIS. So much. I really can't stand this crap. Everybody has the same goddamn tyres. If Ferrari and Lotus can handle them, then it's everyone else's fault for making a car that can't.

While I don't really like all that tyre saving, I hope that Red Bull aren't successful with their complaining. Ferrari and Lotus (and also Force India) have done a good job with building a car which can handle the tyres and it would be really unfair to change the tyres now.

The issue with the tyres is whether of not the cars design is causing them to be damage, or they just aren't durable enough. I can see why people don't want 4 stops, but it's not easy to stop if cars are harsh on their tyres. What would not be good is a return to the 1-stop Bridgestone era. However, tyre failures need addressing.

It's just Red Bull crying foul because their car isn't managing it's tyres well. They wouldn't be complaining if they were in Ferrari/Lotus/Force India's position.

Personally, I wouldn't be too surprised if Pirelli left F1 due to all the constant spats from the teams - I believe Paul Hembrey released a statement saying that they were told to build tires that degraded quickly and produced more pit stops - and if this claim is true, then they are succeeding invariably. Personally, as long as we don't have any more Indy 2005 incidents, I couldn't give a hoot on how durable the tires are.

I still don't know why Mateschitz is complaining so much about the Pirellis...
It's all nonsense if we look at overall race time by the winner.
-Here I'm considering all current formula (2009 - now) years for the first 5 races, I'm missing out wet races and Bahrain 2010 because a different configuration was used.
Australia:
2009 - Button - 1:34:15 (2 SC)
2010 - Button - 1:33:36 (wet/dry) (1SC)
2011 - Vettel - 1:29:30
2012 - Button - 1:34:09 (1 SC)
2013 - Raikkonen - 1:30.03
Malaysia: (2009 and 2012 wet races)
2010 - Vettel - 1:33:48
2011 - Vettel - 1:37:39
2013 - Vettel - 1:38:56
China (2009 and 2010 were wet)
2011 - Hamilton - 1:36:58
2012 - Rosberg - 1:36:26
2013 - Alonso - 1:36:26
Bahrain
2009 - Button - 1:31:48
2012 - Vettel - 1:35:10
2013 - Vettel - 1:36:00
Spain
2009 - Button - 1:37:19 (1 SC)
2010 - Webber - 1:35:42
2011 - Vettel - 1:39:03
2012 - Maldonado 1:39:09
2013 - Alonso - 1:39:16
Overall, barring Malaysia and Bahrain, This season's Pirellis are helping the same race time from the events this season (3 out of 5). Ironically the two races I have mentioned are the ones that Red Bull have won, yet they're still complaining....
I see no reason to suggest changing these tyres

I do think that it is possible that Pirelli could reconsider their commitment to F1 - after the criticism of events in Bahrain, this is what they had to say:
"We were asked to replicate Canada 2010 and we are doing what we were asked to do. If you don't want us to do that, tell us and we'll do another approach," Hembery said of the criticism. "But if we do that, maybe it doesn't appeal to us any more being in the sport where you get no visibility.
"That was one of the reasons why the previous suppliers had to go, because they were anonymous.
"We could build the tyres to last the whole race, go to sleep, say we're not worried about any publicity.
"As it is a very dramatic and significant net cost to the business, we have to justify why we are here," he added. "So we need to have visibility, we need to have a profile, otherwise quite frankly we won't be here."
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/04/2 ... formulaOne
By the sounds of things, Pirelli are in an increasingly uncomfortable position in the political debate between teams, with Mateschitz pushing for what he believes would benefit his team the most and outfits like Lotus and Ferrari keen to keep things as they are. With a hostile press and aggressive teams to deal with, I wouldn't blame Pirelli if they decided to back out of F1 sooner rather than later.

Well, I'm okay with those degrading tyres. There are teams who can handle them quite good, and others who don't. So back to factory for them and work on it. Mercedes for example has had this problems ever since Pirelli entered. So start working on it and stop blaiming the tyre-warmers for destroying them (that one really made me laugh this weekend
).
BUT, what I think has to change as soon as posible, are the problems with tyres saying bye-bye and disintegrating into million pieces. That should never ever happend. Imaging that happening in a fast corner like Eau Rouge...
And I still don't believe Pirelli for claiming that all accidents where caused by debris. Of course mister Hembery has to say that: they still sell tyres for road cars. Show the customer, that the quality is outstanding... And his pictures in Twitter showing the involved carbon parts prove nothing. They haven't been stuck in the tyre, so just walk around the circuit and pick up any random part lying around and claimt that exactly these parts caused the tyre to loos the belt.

My rant about tyres is to screw them and actually race. It seems to me that the FIA want higher deg tyres to increase overtaking. On track or in pit lane? I think the pit lane. At least DRS and KERS help counterbalance the difference.

Pirelli changing the construction of the compounds is just wrong. The Lotus is designed with THESE tires in mind! You can't change the rules in the middle of the season just because they make 4 pit stops! bathplug all who have complained about the tires! Red Bullshit!
