That's an interesting idea, Guinness being the title sponsor for Empire.

I would say go with Unipart although less money involved at least we know that the is getting it over two seasons. Where as with guiness if we dont get a point we know we will loose funding which could affect car development for the following season. The Ford engine would be a step backwards.

We're not getting points and switching engines might hurt too much for the extra money, so play it safe with Unipart.

More Funding = More Success

Guinness it is. Though if I had my way I'd try and get both of them onboard. As for Ford, them and their naturally aspirated engines can sod off.

28 Piercarlo Ghinzani (Osella-Ford)  1:16.127
29 Michele Alboreto (Tyrell-Ford)    NO TIME

Well,I did not expect that. For most of the season,Riccardo Patrese has been the weaker of the two Brabhams, with Nelson Piquet scoring poles and podiums while Patrese was giving scorekeepers headaches by trying to extend the longest possible countback with John Watson....with only one point on the board. Now,though, his BMW engine has come alive and somehow, with some immense luck around Woodcote,Patrese finds himself on pole for tomorrow's race, with Elio de Angelis trying to make up for his Montreal DNF in second. New championship leader Alain Prost is sitting pretty in third, with Patrick Tambay in close company. Alfa Romeo have struggled on the tight circuits so far this year, but Andrea de Cesaris is showing that the Alfa can go fast on fast tracks as he proves right here. The Lotuses,or Lotii, are sixth and 7th,with Nelson Piquet not doing as good as his teammate, but enough to get 8th.Then our first non-turbo runner in Derek Warwick out of all people is ninth, before Thierry Boutsen leads his teammate home in tenth for Toleman.

And now some shocks. Jacques Laffite had a nightmare qualifying in Canada, and today wasn't too much of a sweet dream, qualifying behind the Ligier of Jarier of all people.McLaren struggled badly, though Williams struggled heavily with the Cossie V8s.Rene Arnoux claimed that he was held up every single time he felt he was on a good lap,but that's no excuse for qualifying behind the Williams. And finally, the team that has been more-or-less the surprise of the season, finishing 3-4 in Canada, now qualify 24th and last.LAST. However, both have plainly good reasons. Sullivan dropped a cylinder during his main flyer after two bankers, while Alboreto did not get out of his garage at all,the car's hydraulics just sitting in a corner not wanting to do anything. Shame, really.
------------------------------------------------

OOC:Race should be up by Wednesday,keyword--should. And no,xkoranate does not simulate someone failing to set a lap time, but Alboreto's lap time was so horrible, even a Kauhsen driven by Giovanni Lavaggi could have done better than that, and I just could not find an excuse as to how that lap time could have ever been set.

Take Ghinzani's time and add 3 seconds. In short,he was 4 seconds away from actually qualifying and a whole ten seconds beyond Patrese's pole time.

Anyway,here is....

1983 British Grand Prix--Race

11 Martin Brundle (Empire-Hart)            -2 laps
12 Manfred Winklehock (ATS-BMW)            -2 laps
13 Danny Sullivan (Tyrell-Ford)            -2 laps
14 Brian Henton (Theodore-Ford)            -2 laps

Code: Select all

 - Johnny Cecotto (Theodore-Ford)       DNF lap 60
Jacques Laffite (Renault)            DNF lap 54
John Watson (McLaren-Ford)           DNF lap 54
Teo Fabi (Toleman-Hart)              DNF lap 42
Eddie Cheever (Williams-Ford)        DNF lap 37
Alain Prost (Renault)                DNF lap 34
Derek Daly (Lotus-Renault)           DNF lap 27
Corrado Fabi (Osella-Ford)           DNF lap 26
Niki Lauda (McLaren-Ford)            DNF lap 13
Nigel Mansell (Lotus-Renault)        DNF lap 10
Rene Arnoux (Alfa Romeo)              DNF lap 5
Marc Surer (Arrows-Ford)              DNF lap 2

This race, barring all the DNFs,was all "Forza Italia",despite the race being in Milton Keynes.3 of the top four finishers were Italians, and the podium was filled with Italian manufacturers. Patrick Tambay was the sole Frenchman to put a slight kink in Italy's celebrations, which became bigger when he won the race by a dominating 50 seconds. 50. Over his teammate,no less, who co-operated with Tambay to mug the field at the start, then Tambay ran away like a man on fire.Almost literally, when Eddie Cheever's fuel leak somehow ignited as Tambay's car flew by,producing a miraclous trail of fire that was quickly extinguished by other passing cars. One of those cars was Andrea de Cesaris, who finally found the right side of luck with his Alfa Romeo for the whole weekend to take third place. However,he did get a bit of help when Patrese and Alain Prost had a scary moment at Abbey when they touched as de Cesaris shot through the middle.Patrese soldiered on to fourth while Alain Prost couldn't help but notice his right front wasn't touching the ground anymore. Or turning. Or doing anything helpful in particular. Thus,he had to retire with the suspension skewered.Nelson Piquet had a solid,if not successful, effor in finishing fifth, while the Toleman team were elated with Thierry Boutsen bagging their first point of the season, proving the strength of the new engine upgrade.

Derek Warwick sailed home close behind in seventh,Mauro Baldi eighth, and Keke Rosberg had an absolute shocker of a day, having his enigne stall in the pitlane among other calamities that placed him behind a Ligier.Yet,that also placed him infront of the other Ligier, that of Jean-Pierre Jarier.Martin Brundle ,believe it or not, forced a photo finish with Tambay, though that was to determine whether he would end up two laps down, which he was. Manfred Winklehock had another exciting battle with Brundle like Long Beach, though that battle dissovled when Winklehock became a bit too generous in letting Piquet through.Danny Sullivan completed a miserable Tyrell weekend while Brian Henton finished stone dead last.

Now,time for those that DNFed.Marc Surer was musled into the barrier at Woodcote by Rene Arnoux on lap 2,though karma bit the Frenchman hard as he went wide on Woodcote on lap 5. He could have made it back onto track...had he not hit Surer's car first.Nigel Mansell had his rear wing come off, though thankfully he only hit the barrier with a light tap. Niki Lauda pulled in with a nasty transmission issue on lap 13. Then,Corrado Fabi made himself a prime contender for the worst driver of the race.We should really call that Reject of the Race, but that sounds too...flashy,so this will do for now.Having a terrible pitstop,he came out of the pits to find out that people started lapping him.Derek Daly was one of those, and as the two came down into Chapel,Daly pulled inside expecting Fabi to let him through. He didn't,and the two ended up in the barrier.Dally was understandably irate at Fabi, and didn't mind attempting to chase Fabi all the way back to the pitlane like a Hollywood film, except with less explosions and being in the English Countryside.

Prost's and Cheever's failures were mentioned above,Teo Fabi had issues with steering,John Watson and Jacques Laffite had a coming together at Copse that sent both cars home with a limp and finally,Johnny Cecotto decided the best thing to do at Woodcote was to run over the second kerb of the chicane. Cue broken suspension, broken floor, broken Cecotto and broken car. Another thing that was broken was Alain Prost's short time at the top,his championship leader status being taken over by Elio de Angelis, with Patrick Tambay breathing down his neck. With just 7 races left, this is going to be good.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Driver's Championship (Round 9/16)

1.Elio de Angelis--30
2.Patrick Tambay--29
3.Alain Prost--28
4.Jacques Laffite--27
5.Niki Lauda--19
6.Michele Alboreto--18
7.Eddie Cheever--15

16.Derek Warwick--2 (1 5th,3 7ths)
17.Rene Arnoux--2 (1 5th,8 DNFs)

July 20,1983

Thomas Travers smiled. He often smiled, but this smile was bigger than before. Having got some solid finishes and an ambitious sponsorship deal with Guiness hat would get Empire well and truly noticed, Mr. Traver's had every reason to smile. And as he arrived to the hotel in Brands Hatch, his smile grew from happy to super-happy/creepy levels when the announcement came in over the phone that the second chassis has just finished being developed. Finally,a chance to see why two chassis is better than one. But first,he would have to figure out something.

If you put a new chassis directly into a race without testing, you don't know if the car will travel on rails or break down having traveled 18 metres. So the obvious thing Mr. Travers thought was right to do,was to test the car. Not now, obviously, seeing as they had just arrived at Brands Hatch. Instead,it would be somewhere between the European and German Grand Prix.Where, though, was the test going to be held?

ISSUE:Where will Empire test their new chassis?

Give your vote as being a track in Europethat is not a street track. That includes Spa back then.

You have, once again, some time to vote.

Does listening to a dog licking its balls get you excited?

I suggest testing at Brands Hatch as they will have just finished a grand prix it gives an oppurtunity to compare both chassis and hopefully see if a new one is an improvement and help decide which one to race im Germany

Depends on the weather really. If the predictions are good, go back to Brands and save on the transportation costs. If the weather is bad, go back to Paul Ricard once again. If it rains there too, go to Jarama. The weather must be good there.

Brands Hatch seems like the most logical idea to me.

What a lap. Just, what a lap. Alain Prost showed what you can do with a great car and an even better driver and downright thrashed Brands Hatch's lap record, taking pole and outpacing teammate Jacques Laffite and Derek Daly by over a second. Laffite tried his best, but his lap time was well off and almost fell into the clutches of Daly.Patrick Tambay had a reasonably reasonable qualifying in 4th,as Niki Lauda showed everyone he still has it,dragging the plodding McLaren into fifth. Elio de Angelis was next, leading Riccardo Patrese over the stripe. Marc Surer had an impressive session by Arrows' standards, while Nigel Mansell and Keke Rosberg had almost the exact opposite.Thierry Boutsen impressed in the Toleman, running high on confidence from his sixth at Silverstone last week. Now,though, from the congratulations to the comiserations.Nelson Piquet had an awful qualifying, managing to run wide at Druids almost Every.Single.Lap. Still, could be worse. Could be Eddie Cheever, who qualified is dreary ATS/Theodore range

From the quiet front end of the grid,we get to the back bit. And the stories here are not so much the times, but the stories, which will be featured in this weeks F1 Headlines. First comes from the Theodore team, who have announced they are starting to run out of funds and may consider folding by,or maybe before the season closes. Next up comes the news within Osella. Previously,we reported that Osella had signed an engine deal with Alfa Romeo that was due to begin in Detroit with brand new Alfa naturally aspirated engines. However, despite the hard work from Osella mechanics,Alfa only supplied engines after the Canadian Grand Prix, two races after the engine was due to debut with them in the new FA1E chassis. And,as it turns out,the FA1E's original design was too small to fit in the engine, thus they stuck with the Ford engine for the British Grand Prix before finally being able to fit the new Alfa engine in. The new engine saw both cars gain a whole lot of power on the straights, but the cars "turned like sleeping Labradors" according to Corrado Fabi, and thus both cars were barely pipped out of the race by Empire Racing and Martin Brundle.

Uh-oh... That was just too close to the DNQ zone. We're slowly falling back in the field... We are already annihilated by not only the turbos but DFVs as well.
