2013 HWNSNBM'S Hungarian Grand Prix Thread
After a 3 week break F1 Returns to action in Hungary. Often Regarded as Monaco without the barriers because it is so hard to overtake. This is a race where the Pirelli's can come into their own and where qualifying is crucial.
That means Mercedes should be at an advantage over 1 lap and on past history Lewis Hamilton should be a favorite. Like Montreal he has won at this track 3 times (2007 2009 2012) and Qualified on pole 3 times (2007 2008 2012). That kind of history makes him favorite. Nico Rosberg hasn't had great luck at this track (4th in 2009 his best result) let's hope Mercedes learned from Nurburgring or that conditions are like 2006/2011.
For Me Lotus are favorites in normal conditions but it depends if they can qualify well. Last year Romain Grosjean Qualified 2nd while Kimi Raikkonen was 2nd on the grid in China. If Lotus lock out the Front Row for me nothing can stop them. Raikkonen won in 2005 and has finished 2nd 4 times plus he was on pole in 2006 and it's the closest thing he'll get to a home race.
Red Bull dominated the 2010 meeting here but despite having had qualified in the top 3 in the last 4 events including 2 poles Sebastian Vettel has never won here. He would have won in 2010 had he remembered to check the safety car rules and although he was 2nd in 2011 that was because Hamilton has his penalty. Mark Webber inherited that 2010 win by putting on a Schumacher 1998 style charge. That and a 3rd in 2009 aside Webber hasn't had the best of Hungarian GP's so lets hope HWNSNBM gives him some luck to do so
Ferrari have to start delivering as of now. Their Qualifying has been shocking since Bahrain especially which is the last time a Ferrari was in the top 3 and Felipe Massa hasn't helped with 5 accidents over the last 4 races. Spain seems a long time ago now even for Alonso. Ferrari haven't won here since 2004 and haven't been on pole here since 2005 which rather sums it up doesn't it.
Mclaren ramped up the pressure on Force India in Germany and Hungary is one of their better tracks having won 6 of the last 8 Hungarian GP's. While i don't expect a win i really hope Mclaren rescue a podium from this season. Force India regressed in Germany with both Di Resta and Sutil going into a shell and not coming out . They can't afford to do that in Hungary.
Toro Rosso had a double points finish in the wet/dry 2011 race and I hope JEV's curse has worn off having seen Ricciardo get a Test in the Red Bull while he had to stay in the Toro Rosso. He should use this as motivation to get back on top just like Ricciardo does when he's getting beaten. Williams should be slightly more competitive now that we have the newer Pirelli's while Caterham and Marussia will sadly be at the back again and in the usual order: Pic Bianchi Van der Garde and Chilton (Unless Maxiboy uses his 2012 GP2 win as inspiration.

Re: 2013 HWNSNBM'S Hungarian Grand Prix Thread
Well, I predict Lotus and Merc to have a bit of an upper hand here and Red Bull should be up front. Ferrari I think will have another lackluster weekend, considering their qualy pace is total crap. McLaren I fell can do something here. Too bad I won't be able to see it hopefully happen.

McLaren just have to do well here, much better than anything else this season.
The twisty configurations of the Hungaroring seem to suit McLaren well because they have won 6 of the last 8 Hungarian GPs.

It's a matter between Lotus, Red Bull and Fernando Alonso, who should never be discounted. Red Bull's tyre degradation might put them slightly off though, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a Kimi Räikkönen victory.

You mean Merc? Though I have to be honest, Mercedes looks pretty good at the moment, considering qualifying does well here.

Anyway i'm sure we've all been aware of the proposed pit lane changes in response to the Webber incident. Well the FIA have finally settled on something

What will the new camera angles look like? Or will they be the same?

Forgot how at this race 10 years ago Fernando Alonso scored his first victory of 32 so far. This is the link to a video of Alonso winning with ITV commentary.

Who cares that it was Alonso's first win?
I do, but more important things happened that weekend, like a debut of a particular Hungarian racing driver. Some say, that if you mention his full name, you will be hit with multiple papayas from an unnamed resident of Vanuatu, and that he and Ferenc Szisz are infact the same person. All we know is, he's called HWNSNBM.

Another average weekend for Merc, then, even though you can hardly overtake in Budapest.
If the conditions are that hot, Ferrari and Lotus will be contenders for the win and I hope that FI can sneak onto the podium.

I wouldn't necessarily say that is the case.
OK, it is true that the current predictions for a very hot, dry weekend should play to their strengths and should help them cope with the changes to the rear tyres (the changes are supposed to lead, indirectly, to reduced heat build up).
However, against that there is the issue that they still are yet to really shine in qualifying - Kimi has only appeared once on the front row in qualifying (in China) and more normally qualifies on rows three to four. If Lotus end up behind both Mercedes and Red Bull in qualifying, given that overtaking is quite difficult even with a reasonable pace advantage (see the Hamilton-Kimi battle in 2012, where Kimi arguably had better tyre wear in the final stages but Hamilton could manage his pace in the final sector to ensure that Kimi couldn't use his DRS to pass him on the straights), they could end up stuck in the pack and lose a fair amount of time during the opening stages of the race.
It is also not entirely clear that this sort of venue will suit the E21 that much - Lotus have tended to be best at venues with medium to high speed corners and medium downforce settings, whereas the Hungaroring has tended to be better for cars that have decent mechanical grip and good performance in low to medium speed corners (one reason why McLaren have tended to be fairly strong here). They will probably still be reasonably competitive, but they might not be at their strongest around this particular venue.

"The problem with Grosjean is that he want to take a look back at the corner he's just exited"

Maybe because there weren't many expectations for Chilton this year while VDG has had more mistakes and is preventing the team from going any further.

Yeah but as a 2 time GP2 winner himself you would expect Chilton to have out-qualified and Outraced Bianchi in normal conditions. Their's no favouritism in Marussia so he's been a bit underwhelming for me
Without Mr Van der Garde Caterham wouldn't have been in Q2 in Monaco. I'm hoping there's no more Canada-esque drives from him

What? Let's put this into perspective here. Chilton has won just twice in GP2, and if we're being blunt, is probably in the team for his money/connections. Bianchi is a member of the Ferrari Development program and has been on the periphery of F1 for over a year prior to his F1 debut, and is also reckoned to be a future winner.
When looked at in context, Chilton hasn't exactly disgraced himself, while van der Garde, Monaco qualy aside, has done stark bugger all.

Grosjean would be a decent bet at between 16/1 and 22/1, especially if the track conditions look to be favouring Lotus.

In case you hadn't clicked, I genuinely believe Grosjean will win on Sunday

Bianchi is a member of the Ferrari Development program and has been on the periphery of F1 for over a year prior to his F1 debut, and is also reckoned to be a future winner.
When looked at in context, Chilton hasn't exactly disgraced himself, while van der Garde, Monaco qualy aside, has done stark bugger all.
It is also worth noting that, on paper, van der Garde supposedly has the stronger background - a Formula Renault 3.5 championship to his name and, in general, his end of season ranking in GP2 has been higher than Chilton - which, in turn, comes with greater expectations about his performance. Equally, there is the sense that the CT03, since it was upgraded in Spain, is a more competitive car relative to the MR02 and yet van der Garde has still been beaten a number of times by Chilton in the races.

"The problem with Grosjean is that he want to take a look back at the corner he's just exited"

One of the best races I've ever seen. Such a shame he couldn't win. Would love to see Vettel try the same in say a Williams now.

By far the best feel good moment of 97. A real what might have been case for Arrows.

I read a book last year where an F1 enthusiast from the Netherlands talks about his memories of F1. He mentions the race and when he goes over Hill's hydraulics failure, he says "You kind of knew it was going to happen".

James Allison is to join Ferrari
and Horner says Vergne is not ready for Red Bull. I'm quite suspicious about what he said.

Not surprising in the least. He's a good acquisition for Ferrari though, given that many people, myself included, rate him as one of the top technical directors in F1, and a fairly innovative guy. Given that all but 1 or 2 of Ferrari's cars since 2009 have either been cack or conservative, he could well inspire some change in the fortunes at Maranello. Speaking about Ferrari's technical side, any more on the rumours that Rory Byrne is going to help pen the 2014 car?
