The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing thread
Re: The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing threa
Well, I think this is incredibly worthy of a discussion.
With a few laps to go in the final race before the chase, Newman takes the lead. If he wins the race, he is part of the chase by virtue of his previous win and the win that would have occurred tonight. Newman is contesting this second wildcard spot in the chase with Martin Truex Jr, who also has a single win.
Clint Bowyer, Truex's teammate, receives word that Newman has the lead. As a result, he does this.
Caution flag comes out. Everyone dives for the pits for tires. Newman comes out behind several other drivers. Vickers slows down considerably to allow Logano (who was battling for 10th in the championship with Gordon) to pass him. Edwards goes on to win.
Logano (driver from different team) and Truex make the chase as a result, Newman does not.
Discuss. As outrageous as it is, be civil.

Re: The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing threa
I have a bigger problem with Edwards blatantly jumping the restart but getting the okay from NASCAR because he and Paul Menard, who should've been leading on the restart but didn't because Edwards is a douchebag, made contact. That's such bathplugging bullshite... but at least Kurt Busch made the Chase. That was the only thing I was worried about.

I know this seems like a bit of a stretch but why am I reminded of Crashgate?
In any case, Bowyer needs to be thrown out for a few races and MWR eliminated from the Chase. I don't know if Truex knew that Bowyer caused the caution to come out, granted, but it will look bad on him.
Or maybe he learned some things from Nelson Piquet Jr; who knows

I think Dale Jr. and Mark Martin did things like this about a decade ago. As Jr. spun himself out lazily to get Jeff Gordon back on the lead lap and to keep himself from having to pit in under green at Bristol. Martin blew his own engine out as to help Matt Kenseth trap a bunch of drivers a lap down at Rockingham in 2003. I also blame Paul Menard's poor restart and if Carl Edwards was black-flagged, Newman could have finished 2nd and got in as Truex won the tiebreaker to make the chase. This isn't new at all. In fact one could have said Jimmie Johnson also deliberately overheated his tires resulting in a blowout to get Jeff Gordon back on the lead lap.

ok so they didn't quite pull a Briatore, but it is sort of like what happened in 'Pore 2008 where one team member was pushed forward at the expense of another.
obviously, instead of crashing one car out, they pitted to allow the other driver to pass him under green and gain the point needed. the points mean nothing for them now, as they have been docked severely.

Clint Bowyer spun out, and then Vickers allowed Logano by gaining position by pitting in. I guess Penske got lucky as there was no evidence of communication between Penske and Michael Waltrip.

Seriously? Who comes up with these team orders? NASCAR sort of fixed the wrong (MWR has taken no responsibility so far, instead saying Ty went rouge), and yes, Gordon should be in, but I don't like Gordon, so I'm okay with it
.
I'm more interested in how Newman will do after absolutely shredding his crew Saturday. I think a few "slow stops" are in his future. But what do I know.

And now Gordon is in the Chase, as the 13th man, and NASCAR has now banned team orders, while acknowledging it was commonplace in years past. Pure idiocy. Why not oh I don't know? Have a real points championship? And not a stick-and-ball playoff? Nah, makes too much sense.....

Martin Truex Jr. isn't exactly the best driver in NASCAR either. I don't think one wants to have a sponsor tied to a driver who has only won two races in nearly 300 career NASCAR Sprint Cup events after a cheating scandal. As in Martin Truex Jr. has the shades of Dave Marcis all over him at this point.

Normally I would agree with that, but they stayed with Mikey for years, and Truex can drive circles around Mikey. I dunno, to me Sterno-gate and Floorboardmagnet-gate are worse, although both of those are tame compared to "secret-double-turbo-gate" in the WRC and the first Spygate (which everyone seems to forget about) in 2003. Man Tyota really gets caught a lot don't they?

I think Toyota is some sort of company who says win at all costs. The problem is that Newman has more wins and poles than Truex Jr. as does Kurt Busch. Both of them have had problems securing sponsorship in the past. When the other options available are that much better than Truex Jr., I wouldn't be shocked that Napa jumped ship after this scandal given the other drivers who could land the sponsorship include a driver with 17 wins and 50 poles and another with 24 wins, 16 poles, and a championship. A couple better drivers with sponsorship troubles who are currently as good as Truex Jr. without the scandal baggage. There is a lot more media coverage with more wins and poles, and Busch and Newman have just about 150 more NASCAR starts than Truex Jr.

I can't help but think that NAPA wanted out of MWR for a long while. Granted they did stick with those prior controversies but the incidents in Richmond might've been the straw that broke the camel's back.
I wonder if they're going to any other team; I'm sure some of the smaller teams would love to pick up NAPA, or conversely, they could go to a big team (Roush, Hendrick, Penske, etc).
