Ferrari have a lot of explaining to do. And probably some couples therapy to go.

As usual, the Scuderia ran rampant at the start, quickly jumping Prost and Patrese to assume the lead of the race. Patrick Tambay was leading ahead of Elio de Angelis at that point. However,de Angelis sought to look for a way past. Going into Tarzan on the second lap,de Angelis peeked inside for a move on Tambay, but the Frenchman shut the door, tapping de Angelis and sending both for a spin, which neccesitated some avoiding action from the rest of the pack.Unfortunately,Andrea de Cesaris was unsighted, and when de Angelis' Ferrari came into view,it was too late. He pranged against de Angelis and hurtled into Tambay's car, sending the championship leader and de Cesaris out of the race, while Tambay had a long limp back into the pit lane.

The beneficiary of all this hoo-hah was John Watson, whose gutsy squeeze between de Angelis and the Grass moved him up to third, behind Patrese and Prost. If this race happened earlier in the year,Watson would have been gobbled up by the rest of the pack. Instead,he took full advantage of a brand spanking new TAG turbo and quickly found the lead of the race, from which there would be no looking back. Derek Daly assumed fourth with Jacques Laffite yipping and yapping behind Daly like a French Jack Russell. Michele Alboreto was sixth and Keke Rosberg was seventh with Derek Warwick in eigth and Manfred Winklehock ninth. Tenth, though, was Eddie Cheever, having got an amazaing leap on the start and the lap 2 spins. Mauro Baldi retired on lap 17 with a fried Ford following a rather clumsy gearshift. Michele Alboreto latched onto the Daly-Laffite battle, and soon was looking for opportunities to pass them both. Into Scheviak,Alboreto attempted a move around the outside of Laffite, where the Tyrell had much better grip, but spun a complete 360 set off again, despite completely shredded tyres that needed replacing.Keke Rosberg also spun trying to take avoiding action, and was lucky that the resulting impact with the fence only dented his steering a little.

Meanwhile,Watson was flying. He already started lapping the last place runner,Martin Brundle,on lap 27. Although, admittedly,Brundle was retreating back into the pitlane having lost 3rd and 5th gears, thus he was last. His teammate,Niki Lauda was also flying up the field, showing the power of the new TAG engine and cementing McLaren as an unstoppable force yet again.Meanwhile, Manfred Winklehock had a botched pitstop after accidentally knocking away one of his spare tyres entering the pits, leaving his tyre changer to chase the runaway wheel down the pitlane in a moment sure to go down in Formula One blooper reels in years to come. This, however, cost Winklehock a whole twenty seconds. Rene Arnoux's oil pipe came loose on lap 42,ending his race and Derek Daly's a lap later, when the Lotus spun on the spilt oil on the exit of Hugenholtz and spun into the inside barrier.

Niki Lauda's race came to a halt on lap 50,where the one weakness of the TAG engine was found: reliability. However, the main strength of the TAG was exhibited by John Watson, who crossed the line in dominating fashion, almost 40 seconds ahead of the next finisher,Riccardo Patrese in the Brabham-BMW.Alain Prost finished ahead of Jacques Laffite in fourth, boosting Laffite's chances of winning the championship overall. Fifth was Derek Warwick, scoring Arrows' first point since Monaco. Finally, sixth was Eddie Cheevr, also scoring his first point since Monaco. On the final lap,Nelson Piquet was running seventh, and was actually hunting Cheever down, until he overcorrected his car at the exit of Hondenvlak and speared into the wall, ending his race on his last lap.

F1 Headlines

The Title Chase:

Laffite
The Leader

Points:48
Wins:4 (Brazil,Long Beach,Europe,Austria)
Podiums:4 (Wins)
Poles:0

The championship leader got his season off to a magnificent start, taking two wins in the first two races and leading the championship by 11 points over the first four races. However,he hit a dry spell, including a shocking DNQ in Canada, that allowed the Ferrari duo of Elio de Angelis and Patrick Tambay to close right up. Turns out this was all the push he needed as he came back strong with two more wins in Brands and Autria to hold on to his slipping grasp as championship leader so far.

de Angelis
The Chasing Wolf

Points:45
Wins:3 (San Marino,Belgium,Germany)
Podiums:6 (Wins+Brazil,Britian,Europe)
Poles:1(Germany)

Elio de Angelis has not had the perfect season he would have wanted, but this is his best shot yet to win the Driver's Championship.Despite being peppered with unreliability throughout the season,he's shown pace whenever he finishes, with six of his seven points finishes being no lower than second. He only has one pole, but if he drives like he always had been through the season, this guy could be your next world champion.

Prost
The Pole-Sitter King

Points:41
Wins:1 (Canada)
Podiums:6 (Win+San Marino,Monaco,Belgium,Austria,Dutch)
Poles:4 (Brazil,Long Beach,Europe,Dutch)

The only real contender from last year to be in the hunt for this year's title,it's fair to say that Alain Prost hasn't got luck on his side. What he has, however,is skill and precision,as demonstrated over scorching one-lap performances, taking four poles, second only to the even more unlucky Nelson Piquet. Prost started the season with two poles, but DNFed both races. However,he followed that with a constant points scoring flow, interrupted only by DNFs at Britian and Germany. Prost has also proved handy in changeable conditions, winning the wet-dry Canadian Grand Prix. Despite the sole win this season,Prost is looking strong to fight for the title.

Tambay
The Outsider

Points:35
Wins:2 (France,Britian)
Podiums:5 (Wins+Long Beach,Detroit,Germany)
Poles:1 (Canada)

Patrick Tambay may be 13 points back, but he is most definitely not out of the title race. Having taken over the Ferrari seat in tragic circumstances last year,Tambay has proven himself and the tifosi that he is not just any replacement driver, but one with a passion to win. He announced himself as an early title challenger winning at his home race in France, but reliability has plagued the Frenchman harder than his teammate, though he has an extra win to his credit in Britian. However, with three races to go,Tambay has to push now, otherwise it is game over for him.

September 10,1983

"This is your 7 a.m. wake up call,Mr. Travers"

Thomas Travers acknowledged the smooth,Italian voice of the receptionist, got up,had a quick bathe & change, and went to look at his calendar. Then,he realized he was two days away from a date,in which he marked in bright orange and green, indicating a "VERY IMPORTANT" on his "importance" meter, which he came up when he was 8 and continued to use it to this day. This certain day that was marked,September 12, the day after the Italian Grand Prix, was going to be the start of something big for the new year. This marker was titled:

"START DRIVER SEARCH."

30 Johnny Cecotto (Theodore-Ford)    1:39.026

Now,if you are one of the four title contenders featured on the headlines, and you happen to be leading the championship, your main focus would be not to make any stupid, silly, catastrophic mistakes that will see you make the blooper reel in sports highlights shows.

Laffite did the exact opposite.

After setting a reasonable banker lap,Laffite went all out on his second run. He was timed third as he entered the Lesmos. He should have kept focus on making it past Ascari as he went through Serraglio. Instead he thought he could take the first kink flat out. Big mistake. Laffite went sailing into the gravel trap, which is where he ended his afternoon,19th on the grid, and miserable in his car.

Meanwhile,McLaren are proving that their new TAG engine would be a force to be reckoned with next year,as Lauda and Watson took pole and third on the grid, with only the Renault of Alain Prost splitting the two. Prost was not the only championship contender near the top,as Patrick Tambay qualified fourth in his hopes of keeping the championship alive. 5th was Nelson Piquet, and sixth was the ever impressive Derek Daly. Elio de Angelis did not have his best qualifying, and would be rueing at missing at the opportunity to get a massive advantage over Laffite. Riccardo Patrese came in 8th,Andrea de Cesaris managed a decent ninth for Alfa Romeo, and rounding out the top 10 was the Toleman of Thierry Boutsen.

And finally, even though Johnny Cecotto qualified dead last,Raul Boesel will be the person to participate in Theodore's last ever Grand Prix start, qualifying 23rd ahead of the Ligiers and Martin Brundle.

Senna, Bellof and Berger as a 3rd option for a rookie! I would also like to see one experienced driver in the team(let's say 2 or more seasons of experience!)

Who is this "Schumacher" you speak of?

And hiring another rookie driver like Senna probably isn't what the team needs at the moment - now that we are beginning to step up we need experience to get the feedback on where we can go faster.

This is why i think one experienced and one rookie driver would be the best choice!

Michael Scumacher was born in January 1969 (off the top of my head). So in '83, he would be 14... Even in 2013, 18 is considered very young for Sirotkin to make his debut for next year...

I don't think we can afford a talent programm at the moment! In a few years when we are one of the big teams we can do it!

I think we should try to get Berger. He's probably the best young driver available for a small team like Empire, as I think Bellof and Senna will sign for larger teams. I'd suggest Boutsen, or if we can't get him Johansson as our second driver.

May I suggest Corrado Fabi? Based on F2 results, he's an outstanding driver despite his struggles in the Osella.

Jacques Laffite (Renault)             DNF lap 4
Andrea de Cesaris (Alfa Romeo)        DNF lap 1

Patrick Tambay may have had the worst of luck this season, but today,he has the comeback gods on his side, even if only it was just a podium finish.Still,he gained six vital points, compared to all of the other three championship contenders: zilch.

As the race started,Andrea de Cesaris ended his race in hilarious fashion:by getting to the start-finish line and stopping almost immediately. After the fans saw an Italian retire in an Italian car, they started to groan as Riccardo Patrese found a way past Elio de Angelis on lap 3. One lap later, though, and the tribunes erupted with cheers. Jacques Laffite attempted a real risky move on Eddie Cheever into Parabolica in his attempt to move up the field. Cheever didn't expect the Renault to close in that quickly, and Laffite had to apply the anchors to avoid contact.Unfortunately, this resulted in the championship leader spinning into the gravel trap and out of the race. The tifosi continued cheering until lap 8,when Niki Lauda's engine failure resulted in Alain Prost leading the race, with John Watson not too far behind. Behind them, traditional Italian unreliability struck, this time though for the drivers. Michele Alboreto and Mauro Baldi both ended up spinning at Ascari and retiring,as they seemed to skip off some oil spilt by Lauda's McLaren. Note down that last statement for now.

The battle up at the front was starting to boil,as Watson furiously looked every which way past Prost, the fast and furious Brit obviously quicker, but the cool and calculated Frenchblocked every move with skill. On lap 13,Watson attempted a move down the inside of Ascari.Once again,Prost went for the block. However, that move to the inside meant that Watson was now running on his teammate's oil.Without any chance to stop the car,Watson plowed into Prost, sending both out of the race in spectacular style. The tifosi, once again, erupted into cheers and whoops.

At this moment,Patrick Tambay was leading the race, but only by a bit, ahead of the two Brabhams,Piquet ahead of Patrese, with Elio de Angelis waiting in the wings. The pit stops shuffled positions each way; Piquet got the jump on Tambay, but Patrese got held up by his teammate, promoting de Angelis into third to the crowd's joy. Further behind,Nigel Mansell attempted to pit,but spun around at Parabolica after extending his tyres beyond the manner which nature intended, ending his race with some bad tyres. de Angelis started to set a much faster pace than Tambay, and Tambay, being gracious, slowed to let de Angelis pass at Lesmo, knowing full well de Angelis could catch Piquet. However, the Italian also slowed. With smoke pouring from the exhaust. His transmission went haywire, and the main championship challenger was out with 17 laps to go.The tifosi went dead silent.

Apart from Teo Fabi being a victim of sudden brake issues on the last lap,de Angelis' blowout was the last eventful moment of the day,as Nelson Piquet cruised onwards to take his first, deserved victory at Monza. Patrick Tambay set some stunning laps near the end in an attempt to catch Piquet, but second was enough to please the tifosi.Third was Riccardo Patrese, marking the first time both Brabhams made the podium this season.4th went to Derek Daly, who needed points badly, fifth went to Rene Arnoux, and sixth went to the lucky Arrows of Derek Warwick, who went through the last three laps with very little rear brakes.
And spare a thought for Theodore, who celebrated at their wildest when Raul Boesel came across the line last, behind the Liger, the Tyrell and the Empire. It was always good having them around, they will be missed from Formula One.

September 12,1983.

Thomas Travers was usually never in a major rush to get back to his office after races, but today was an exception. He would pilot his truck through the traffic, flying down autostradas,Autorouted and even detoured a little into Germany just to reach the unlimited autobahn. Even Martin Brundle looked scared as Travers zipped-zapped past traffic.

Finally reaching Milton Keynes,he did not touch the brake until the truck reached the carpark. Rushing over to his desk, almost damaging the prototype chassis for next year,Mr. Travers sat at his desk. He had a good idea of who to approach, but he needed to approach them first before other teams got their hands on them.He had 350k set aside for signing drivers. The search was on.

The search for Brundle's replacement is on.
------------------------------------------------------------

ISSUE:Who will Empire sign on in 1984?

Reply with at least two named drivers who Empire can sign. This person doesn't need to be a newcomer, other experienced drivers can be approached, but may cost more.

Another feature has been added:Driver Salary. There will be an option to offer a greater contract for a high chance of signing,a regular contract,or a cheap-but-easily rejected salary. The greater contracts are good if another team is interested, and will increase the probability of a driver signing on,while the cheap option works vice-versa,but could leave more money in development of the car.Votes for both drivers and salary options of a driver will be taken into account.

The size of the driver's salaries, the demand for the driver and the RNG scores will all be decided by me. You can ask me for a rough estimate on the prices and demand of a driver before submitting votes.

I'll propose Ayrton Senna and John Watson. Senna for 100k and the rest - for Watson.

You might have mis-read the opening post.

You can name two drivers, but state the size of contract you can give them: Small,Medium or Large.Empire's not hiring two drivers, just naming two drivers to sign, nor is there any monetary values that you can offer. I'll explain:

e.g. You propose to sign Driver A,a relatively experienced F1 driver with a previous podium finish,to a Medium-sized contract, and Driver B,a young driver that finished second in a feeder series,to a Large contract.

Because Driver A is experienced, his medium salary will be 275k,but since driver B is inexperienced but with some potential, driver B's large contract will be 175k at most.

Do take note the rest of the money will be used in car development.

Hmm. I think we'll start with Ayrton Senna, of course, to a large contract, and if that doesn't work, we'll try Nigel Mansell to a large contract as well.

Just to clarify, are we running one car or two cars for '84?

Anyways, I'd like to propose we offer a large contract to Stefan Bellof, and a medium contract to Michele Alboreto.

A large contract for Ayrton Senna would be best following an easy championship win in the British F3 (considering how Martin Brundle wasn't present for it).

As a second driver, I would suggest Jonathan Palmer on a medium contract, after winning the European F2 championship with 6 races wins and 4 more podiums from the 12 race calendar.

Large for Ayrton Senna, medium for Stefan Johansson. We either need a raw diamond, or an experienced veteran to improve our car. Ideally I would like two Empires on the field, one for a young prodigy (Senna, bellof or Berger) and another for a veteran (Johansson, Jarier, or maybe de Cesaris)

Voting for driver picks closes as soon as the Japanese GP ends,so get those votes in if you have not voted for drivers to join Empire's lineup in 1984 yet.

As of current vote tallies,Ayrton Senna has got quite a margin over everyone else so far,and will be the first one approached to sign on should votes remain the same.

A medium one for Senna, what about a Large for Lauda? If we want experience for a car, theres some right there? Failing that, how about Large for Watson, or a medium for Warwick?

(Apologies if I have missed obvious stuff, I have only just joined the fray now, so please correct me if needed!)

You're not really missing anything, just that you can only choose two drivers to pick and no more,so you'll have to eliminate two from the four you mentioned. And welcome to Empire!

Lauda is the past. And he is a world champion. I can't see why would he accept any offer from a newly established backmaker team.

Ok, in that case a medium for Warwick, and a Medium for Senna. That should leave some cash behind for car development or replacement chassis if we get too many incidents in one season.

14 September,1983.

Thomas Travers was at his factory, checking up results and watching videotapes of previous F1 races using those new-fangled Betamax recorders. He also managed to get a recording of a British Formula Three Race at Silverstone, lent to him by a kind fellow down the road, filming the scene at Becketts. He inserted the tape. 50 minutes later, his mouth was left agape. He had struck on probably the best young driver of the decade. Mr. Travers had to contact that one driver. He was going to contact Ayrton Senna.

----------------------------------------------------
Empire Racing Driver Contract Negotiations for 1984(Shown in negotiation order)

Name:Ayrton Senna
Driver Contract:150k (Large)
Driver Profile:Only 23 years of age,Senna has been lighting up the British Formula Three calendar, having set the championship alight with 12 wins so far in the season and running away with the championship. The Brazilian is known to be quite agressive behind the wheel, but he is touted to be a future star and comes at a reasonable price, bringing in some Brazilian sponsors. Toleman and Empire have splashed plenty of cash for him,but Tyrell,Arrows and, most notably,Brabham are all looking for the Brazilian's service.

RNG:1-30 Toleman
31-55 Empire
56-70 Tyrell
71-85 Arrows
86-100 Brabham
RNG RESULT:28! Ayrton Senna joins Formula One with the Toleman team

Name:Stefan Bellof
Driver Contract:120K(Medium)
Driver Profile:Bellof, just like Senna,is a young hotshot with a big future ahead of him in Formula One.However, despite a lackluster Formula Two campaign,he has set the world alight in the World Endurance Championship, winning the 1000km at Silverstone with a pole time fast enough to qualify 17th in the Formula One event. Also,he has set a new lap record at the Nurburgring. Bellof is known to co-operate well with teammates as long as they're on the same page, and his sportscar credential have attracted offers from all over;Tyrell,Toleman,ATS,Ligier and Empire, who approached him last year, all wanting to sign the Belgian.

RNG:1-25 Tyrell
26-50 Toleman
51-70 Ligier
71-85 Empire
86-100 ATS
RNG RESULT:72!Stefan Bellof joins the team whose offer he refused last season, quite a shocking signing if you ask me.

Name:Gerhard Berger
Driver Contract:80k(Medium)
Driver Profile:Berger has not made many waves at all so far in European Formula Three, but there is plenty of potential in the young Austrian despite having yet to win a European Formula 3 race. However, the key thing talent scouts have pointed to is bagloads of potential, and that has caught the eye of Spirit,ATS,Empire and RAM.However, some say that another season in Formula 3 will do him more good than harm.

RNG:1-25 Empire
26-50 ATS
51-70 RAM
70-90 Spirit
90-100 Stay in Formula 3
RNG RESULT:5!Gerhard Berger makes a move to Empire for an early visit into Formula One!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15 September,1983

Thomas Travers looked like the kind of guy who gets the 4th place consolation prize in the local lottery. He made his money back and managed to sign a very good driver, yet Mr. Travers knew he missed out on the Grand Prize everyone wanted. And he was that close too, with Senna making that micro-hesitation that almost convinced Mr. Travers that Senna would be an Empire driver. Well, at least Mr. Travers could walk out with a smile, knowing he signed a talent good enough to rival,if not beat Senna. That second driver,though.....was he too inexperienced? Should he have stayed in Formula 3? Mr. Travers was struggling to think whether he was a good pick, but he looked on the bright side. He was cheap. That meant there was 150k left in the bank for him to develop the car. For that step back,Mr. Travers found a way to make two steps forward.

Bellof and Berger. Very pleased with this pairing.

Let's score that point for '84.

Bellof and Berger are both very good and talented drivers! But i think that at least at the beginning of the season we will suffer a bit from the inexperience of both drivers! On the other hand, if they find their rythm and got some experience we have really good drivers in our team!
Let's be the biggest surprise in F1 in 1984 and score some points!
