The vast majority is serious (as far as anyone can tell), but there have been cases of long-time members who wrote a lot of things turning out to be parodists.

I used to call it The Onion Effect, until I found it was known on TV Tropes as Poe's Law. In short, it's where it becomes ever harder to distinguish between satirical articles written about extremist nutcases, and those extremist nutcases themselves.

I called it the Onion Effect as I'd seen an Onion article entitled "Christian Right Lobbies To Overturn Second Law Of Thermodynamics" - where you'd think that even the craziest of nutcases with the thinnest of grip on scientific principles wouldn't be that stupid. Wouldn't you? And yet, I got the dreadful sense of foreboding that somewhere, out there, there is someone who believes that the Second Law of Thermodynaics should be overturned, for exactly the reasons given in the article (plus a complete ignorance of what "law" means in a scientific instead of a legal sense), and it doesn't take much to figure out where in the world that person lives.

The problem in America is there is very little to no middle ground anymore. Take for example the news, you can either have far-right (Fox, Limbaugh, Beck, Conservapedia) or Far-Left, (CNN, any of the NBC networks, especially MSNBC, and to a lesser extent CBS) and that's about it. I often hear peple claim they watch Comedy Central for news, but even that has spin, although whether its right-wing or left-wing varies week to week: currently with all the scandals involving the White House, it seems to be more ring-wing. Most Americans I know who want REAL news watch BBC actually, myself included.

The same theory can be said of people. For every Don Pentacost-style "Murica f**k yeah!" redneck, there's a crazy PETA member in Cali, burning Hummers and calling people who didn't vote for Barack racist. It's the reason why only about 20% of Americans vote. Its just too damn partisan for most of us (including me a Poly-Sci minor at college) to care. Nixon was right about the "Silent Majority". The thing is though, its silent.

Perhaps "far-left" was a bit overbearing. Admittedly they are the most center-minded of the cable news channels (not saying much) but they certainly are left-leaning. For example, They completely ignored the Philly abortion trial (although to be fair, so did everyone save Fox, and you can imagine how they covered it), and were very slow to cover the IRS and NSA scandals. They got all over Armstrong, and my opinion of his case is that if he didn't test positive while he was in the tour, his titles stand.* They did the same for Wiggins (or I thought), but not Evans. Makes no sense, those French. Again, no offense.

*I might be an American, but the situation as I see it is if he didn't test positive during the tour, he isn't guilty. The fact he claimed he was guilty when he never tested positive for anything during his tour days, his record stands. Now, they will say no one won the tour between 99-05 because on average, three of the top five riders in those years were caught and reprimanded for doping, which is pointless bull paddies.

So, I'm saying I'm not defending Armstrong for the sake of America.
