I thought putting Kimi in the car was a bizarre decision at the time, and passing up Perez and Hulkenberg. I agree that both drivers could be leaving them this year.

Still, it does seem to be the case that Ferrari are perhaps relying too heavily on veterans at a time when they need something of a fresh start - yes, they have up and coming drivers like Bianchi and, just below him, Marciello, but there seems to be some resistance to making the final step and putting a driver into their team. I wonder if, perhaps, there is a fear that there could be a repeat of what happened to Perez when he went to McLaren - that the added pressure and demands placed on a young driver who is racing for a major team could prove to be overwhelming, such that they are hesitating on taking that risk?

Alesi did fairly well compared to Prost - scored 21 points compared to Prost's 34 is not a bad result. And then they didn't fire Jean for underperforming, and stayed on for four more seasons. This is what they should do - a reformation. If Alonso stays with them for 2015, this would be a wise decision. Jules will have the support of Ferrari, and no pressure from them should also apply as well (but knowing the team from the inside is a definite plus). In fact, Marciello could be a replacement at Marussia - this should keep the prices lower, while giving another YDA member a chance. Something, or someone seems to hold Ferrari back from a complete tabula rasa.

Someone at FIAT needs to give Luca di Montezemolo a swift kick out the door at Ferrari. He is a relic of years gone past. Ferrari needs to modernise? He is the first person that needs to go. It doesn't matter who you install as the team manager, Luca still picks the drivers himself, and he heavily favours veterans. He'll rarely, if ever, throw the dice on a youngster or a rookie. Gilles (and, I suppose maybe Niki and Jean) being the rare exception.

Hulkenberg is ready now. He is ripe for a promotion to a top team. This is his fourth season in F1, so he has the experience behind him now. Previously he took his time to get going in a season, but it wasn't helped by constantly switching to new teams every season. Now he's back at Force India, a team he's worked with before, he's got off on the right foot, and as long as the car doesn't fall back in the development race, will only go from strength to strength based on past performances.

Ferrari would be crazy to extend Raikkonen's contract. Kimi was probably the best driver in F1 in the mid 2000s, but he is past his prime now. He demands too much money for the results he can deliver now. You can pay someone like Hulk or Grosjean half as much as Kimi and get equal or better results.

But then, that puts them in an awkward situation in regards to Bianchi. Contrast it to Ricciardo; he at least had a mid-step between the bargain basement HRT and the Red Bull drive. Bianchi probably needs the same, to gauge his performances in a genuinely midfield car. I'm sure Sauber would take him on in exchange for a discount on their engine contract, though....

Bianchi will score points every race in a Ferrari, but maybe he does need to see a midfield car to judge if he's Ferrari's future #1 or is he a #2

I know I'm going to get shot for this but I can't see how DBTMOTR can go to anyone other than Chilton. At every other team the 2 drivers where closely matched either in Qualifying (Sauber or Lotus) or in the race (Caterham). At Marussia Chilton was 6 tenths behind Bianchi and finished 2 laps behind him. While one of those was down to Chilton not unlapping himself when he ruined Kimi's race the other was fair and square and why I think Chilton will get DBTMOTR

That's not based on dislike for drivers it's based on cold hard reality. Yes I know Gutierrez is useless as well and has given more ammo for people to fire at him but at least he out-qualified his team-mate this time (albeit not really noteworthy when it's Adrian Sutil). Sadly we can't base Red Bull, Lotus, Sauber or Force India on the Race because 1 driver had problems at the start and Toro Rosso had one driver out after 10 laps but Mercedes Ferrari Mclaren Williams and Caterham all had their drivers so close together at some point. Marussia didn't.

I'm not ragging on Chilton but when analyzing the teams sadly he strikes me as the favorite to win the award.
