Mini Reviews for each driver.

1. ITA Alberto Ascari
A dominant weekend, Ascari won from pole, led all but six laps and took fastest lap by a fair margin, the only blip being a slow final pitstop which briefly dropped Ascari behind Chico Landi. This would be no worry for Ascari as he quickly gobbled up the Brazilian within a couple of laps with his fresh softs. It has to be said however, that his race was made easier by Fangio's mid-race retirement. 10/10

2. ENG Peter Collins
A gradual rise up the field eventually settling into a race long battle for second with Hans Stuck and Chico Landi, the former on the same strategy. Collins eventually pipped Hans Stuck on the final lap by virtue of making his final stop later than the German meaning he would gradually real him in over his final stint. 9/10

3. BRD Hans Stuck
Spent most of the race in 2nd behind Ascari after the retirement of France's Maurice Trintignant. Stuck was eventually outdone by Collins on the same strategy, the Englishman's later pitstops allowing him better pace at crucial moments. 8/10

4. BRA Chico Landi
A brilliant home race, Landi ran an alternate version of the standard mixed 2 stopper by running both of his soft stints first, allowing him to rise into the top five early on. At one point the Brazilian looked like a genuine threat for the podium, even briefly leading on merit once the leaders had cycled through their final stops but his strategy meant that Landi was stuck on worn hards which made him a sitting duck for the other leaders who were all on fresh softs. and by the end of the race Landi was back down to 4th. 9/10

5. NED Dries van der Lof
The Dutchman ran a risky strategy with five stints on softs, this meant he lost minimal time on worn tires in exchange for spending more time in the pits than anyone else. However of the drivers that ran exclusively on softs, he ended up the highest finisher, passing Titterington, Claes and Bettenhausen in his final stint, the latter having done three stints on softs. On a side note, Van der Lof was the only driver other than Ascari to set a sub 1:18 lap in the race. 9/10

6. USA Tony Bettenhausen
An impressive debut for the American who spent the bulk of the race comfortably inside the top ten. He also spent the race as the leader of the drivers exclusively on softs until the final laps when Van der Lof finally overhauled him, taking advantage of his fresher tires. 8/10

7. BEL Johnny Claes
Running the same strategy as Landi, Claes managed to rise up into the top ten early from deep in the midfield but like Landi, lost positions in the closing stages on worn hards. Still this was easily Belgium's best finish since 1950. 7/10

8. NIR Desmond Titterington
Another variant of the all soft strategy with the Ulsterman running four stints. In the end he wasn't too far from Bettenhausen or Van der Lof proving that all three varients were roughly equal. 7/10

9. IRE Joe Kelly
Gained more positions than any other driver running the opposite strategy to Landi and Claes by running the hard stint first, Kelly managed to finish ahead of Wallenius, the only other finisher on the same strategy despite starting much further behind. His soft stints were almost as short as Van der Lof's which allowed him to be one of the quickest drivers in the latter stages but he had lost too much time earlier with his long hard stint to contend with the other drivers that were on the mixed two stopper. 6/10

10. MON Louis Chiron
Somewhat of a disapointing race for the oldest driver in the field. Chiron ran an exclusively hard strategy meaning only one stop in exchange for never being particularly quick at any point. Although both he and David Murray got into the top five early on after those who had started on softs made their first stops, both spent the rest of the day gradually dropping down the order as the hard tires proved to be not that much more durable than the softs, negating most of their advantage. 5/10

11. DDR Ernst Klodwig
An odd strategy from East Germany that was never really going to work, essentially a standard hard strategy with a short soft stint tacked on at the end. Klodwig just barely gained back the time he lost from the extra stop but not enough to overhaul Chiron for 10th to make the strategy worth it. 6/10

12. NZL Jack Tutton
After a poor qualifying session, the All Blacks then made the mistake of running the softs to within an inch of their lives in the first stint by spending 37 laps on them when 35 was the recommended maximum, the consequence being that Tutton lost a bunch of time on worn tires and spent most of the day languashing towards the back. Its somewhat of a miracle that he ended the day as high as 12th. 4/10

13. FIN Asser Wallenius
Not a particularly fast race from the Finn yet attrition allowed him to score Finland's first points since 1950. 5/10

14. CAN Hal Martin
The most disapointed team of the day. Martin wasted his strong qualifying position with a poor starting dropping him into the midfield and his race was compounded further when his all hard stratgey proved to be more of a hinderance than a help. 4/10

15. VEN Ettore Chimeri
Not alot was expected from the inexpericed Chimeri yet attrition allowed him to score on debut after a steady race, culminating in him mugging Zdenek Pohl for the final point on the last lap. 6/10

16. CZE Zdenek Pohl
Another to suffer from an all hard strategy as Pohl spent the race near the back. 3/10

17. COL Arcesio Paz
Final finisher and 5 laps down in the end but Paz did well to survive when more experienced drivers failed. 5/10

18. AUS Tony Gaze
Huge disapointment for the Aussies as Gaze looked certain to secure 5th on the same strategy as Landi only for his gearbox to fail. Still a very strong performance however. 8/10

19. SCO David Murray
Another of the all hard runners, Murray had been fending off Joe Kelly for 9th when he put it in the wall in the closing stages 6/10

Ret DMR Porfiro Rubirosa
A suspension failure ended another impressive performance from Rubirosa who had been running 5th at the time not far behind Stuck and Collins on the same strategy 8/10

Ret SUI Toulo de Graffenried
Another front runner on the standard mixed two stopper, de Graffenried likely would have been a factor in the battle for 2nd had he not crashed out. 6/10

Ret ARG Juan Manuel Fangio
The only driver running hard tires that managed to remain in the top five during the first stint, Fangio inherited the lead after the soft runners made their first stops and may well have been Ascari's main threat to the win if his engine hadn't let him down. Then again given how the all hard strategy let many others down, he may have struggled to hold onto 2nd. 9/10

Ret PER Luis Astengo Albizuri
Ran the suicidal strategy of trying to run the entire race on softs, he only managed 34 laps before an inevitable puncture put him in the wall. As glacially slow as usual too. 1/10

Ret FRA Maurice Trintignant
Likely would have finished 2nd but his engine changed its mind about working after just four laps. 9/10

Ret MEX Corona Illescas
As hopeless as ever, managed four slow laps before chucking it in the wall 1/10

Bettenhausen will continue for the rest of the season, as he hasn't got any USAC races clashing with the A1GP events.

Strategies

Sebring is expected to be easier on tires than Salvador though still not as easy as the smoother European tracks. The total race distance is 50 laps.

Hard tires are expected to last approximately 45 laps.
Soft tires are expected to last approximately 30 laps.

A fully worn tire is expected to be around 3 seconds a lap slower.
Total pitstop time is expected to be around 45 seconds.

You have until Thursday to set your strategies.

Following a poor first race Canada are going for an aggressive strategy, starting on soft tyres and pitting just once on lap 21 for softs.

England starts on softs, pits on lap 23 and puts another set of softs.

Finland won't make a pit stop, trying to race through on hards.

The Dominican Republic will start on hards and pit for softs on lap 31.
Sweden will start on softs and pit for more softs on lap 27.
Belgium will attempt the whole race on a single set of hards.

Both Colombia and Guatemala will share the strategy of driving 25 laps on softs, then pitting once for a similar set.

France: Hard Tires, 0 stops.

Spain: Soft Tires, Pit lap 18 for new softs.

Going a bit aggressive as neither car qualified well.

New Zealand will start on softs and pit on lap 25 for softs.

South Africa will start on hard and pit on lap 40 for softs.

Alberto Ascari takes his second win of the season as he and Peter Collins make use of their fresher tires to hunt down and catch Fangio, the Argentinian having attempted the whole race on one set of hards. In fact this race could be seen as a warning to anyone trying to save time with no pitstop time as of the 19 teams that attempted this strategy, only four remained in the points by the end of the race. Though one driver with perhaps an even less successful strategy was David Murray who attempted three short stints on the softs, though van der Lof used a similar strategy in Brazil to much success, Murray's restricted him to ninth when he could have fought for a top five. He didn't even get fastest lap out of it as he was pipped by Porfirio Rubirosa by 0.023 seconds.

We begin the European leg of the season with A1GP's first ever visit behind the Iron Curtain.

Ascari and Fangio sweep the front row again but this time the experienced hands of Chiron and Stuck are right behind having all qualified within 0.05 seconds! Joe Kelly performed brilliantly to make the top five and home hero Ernest Klodwig gets East Germany up to 7th! Maurice Trintignant however probably should have been in the battle for pole but suffered from a dirty track from having to set his lap first as France are currently last in points. He starts down in 12th.

Strategies

The race will be 67 laps. We are still not yet at the smoothest tracks so again none of the tires are expected to last the distance.
Hards will last approximately 50 laps.
Softs will last approximately 30 laps, they will start off around a second faster than the hards pace.
Fully worn tires again should be around three seconds off the pace of a fresh tire.
Pit stops will take in total 40-50 seconds.

You have until Saturday to set strategies.

Both Alianza Latinoamericana teams will use a strategy of 45 laps on hards, then changing to softs.
Eurosport broadcast for the 1990 Mexican GP prequalifying:

Brazil will start on hards and replace them around lap 47 being replaced by softs
