Yes, it is nearly time for Monza. The Parabolica now has Tarmac run off area but the big news is that surrounding Ron Dennis.

Look at those ice-cubes, each one is identical. Probably only a certain exacting specification is permitted wth cubes not fitting the requirements removed and disposed of before they get anywhere near Ron.
I hope this isnt the last Italian grand prix.

Despite being a fan, I can live with Kobayashi being let go in favour of Lotterer. The Lotterer thing interests me, despite his F1 newbie-status, he's had massive success in other motorsports so I don't consider him a proper Reject but even so I want him to do well. I know that may be at odds with the ethos of the forum but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Re: Italian GP Discussion thread
I previously wrote here a post defending Colin Kolles.
I take it all back. He sold out to Red Bull and stuck Mehri in FP1. Sensibly, Lotterer declined the Monza drive for that reason. He is a rookie, and he needs as much FP time as he can get.
Even when it looked like Kolles was finally making a talent-based decision, he managed to sell out again.
GO HOME KOLLES, JUST GO HOME!

Speaking of Ron Dennis, I saved a quote by him from an interview earlier this year (March 6th);
I realise the majority dislikes Ron but I have always thought of him as a good guy.
Granted, me being a great Hakkinen-fan through the years might have been a contributing factor in me also accepting Ron.
He's a cool dude.
I posted a link back in May to a great ~50 minute interview with RD. Here it is again;

I agree. As much as I am a fan of Kobayashi, it's always interesting to see a new F1 driver enter the sport.

Re: Italian GP Discussion thread
Then why don't Caterham put Merhi in Ericsson's car for FP1? As far as I'm concerned, I can only think of contract/sponsorship clauses preventing that. That way, Lotterer could race again. Or have Merhi and Lotterer share the car in FP1 if possible?!

Well, you've answered your own question there.
It would also be counter-productive to switch drivers mid-FP1; by the time it would take to change the seats and pedal positions, the number decals and the setups, the session would be over.
Shame Andre's not racing this weekend, but c'est la vie.

Well said.
And let me guess, the FIA will hand 5-seconds penalties to those who cannot keep it in the proper track just to try and keep the spirit of the original corner alive? Yeah, right...

Senna felt the punishment for failing to keep it on the track. That is why that for me, Monaco should never leave the calendar. It will be hard for FIA to place run-off areas on them.
Tracks that properly punish drivers in F1 are a dying breed, I am afraid.

But wasn't the change only on the entry of Parabolica? I may be wrong, but often the cars run wide and out on their way out of this corner.
So it's bad, but...could be a lot worse..

That's right, it's only 1.5m wide on the exit, so it's really not as bad as people make out.

You sense that the news this weekend is really more of a stay of execution for Kamui than a long term reprieve - Kamui's seat is likely to be sold from beneath him now that the team has exhausted what funds he brought to the team, and you presume that Merhi will end up at Caterham sooner rather than later.
[Edit] Speaking of Merhi, he has said that it looks as if his superlicence may be conditional on his performance in FP1. Interestingly, he has hinted that, even if he did get his superlicence fairly soon after Monza, he might not automatically replace Kamui immediately, mainly because of the difficulties in getting used to the next circuit coming up (Singapore). I wonder if perhaps Caterham might hold onto Kamui until after the Japanese GP - perhaps in the hope that they can exploit Kamui's home race for one last dollop of cash - with Merhi being given free practise sessions in the meantime.

On another note and in a shameful display of favoritism following the lines of what had been Lotterer debut, Caterham makes Merhi look good compared to Ericsson...
