Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2014 Singapore

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for JEV's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until the 26th September

My nominations:
1. Vergne
2. Maldonado

I'll echo Shizuka, I guess.

1. JEV - second step to unrejectification!
2. The Reverend Maldonado - almost scored a point!

1. Jean-Eric Vergne - Great racing, even if he was a bit, erm, creative with track limits along the way. But who cares, he's potentially made Toro Rosso look foolish for sacking him, and added some value to himself.

2. Pastor Maldonado - So, so close to a point.

1) Maldonado- A shame that he didn't get the point he looked like he might get, but it was nice to see him perform

2) Perez- After the way the race was going, I didn't expect him to charge back up as well as he did. Made for a very exciting finish

1. Sergio Pérez
What a good drive, especially after Sutil was a moron against him.

2. Jean - Eric Vergne
Why sack him? He's really good... God damn you Marko, you moron.

Honorable Mention:
Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean - Tried and almost got points, even though they we're driving shite boxes.

1. Pastor Maldonado - Totally under control. Would love to see his haters' reaction when they saw him ahead of Grosjean the whole race.
2. Jean-Eric Vergne - He's not going out without a fight, is he? Hell of a drive, even with the penalties.

1.Vergne, The world was against him and he won! (well came 6th which counts as a win in that car!)

2.Maldonado, a Mature level headed competent drive and he beat a rumbled Grosjean, the crew made a bold strategy call and it nearly worked out. Lotus didn't score points today but earned some respect.

JEV, for managing to turn the track into a straight line at every opportunity and then saying 'meh' to penalties.

1. Jean-Éric Vergne: Sixth place with a Toro Rosso after several penalties. For once, it was nice to see an ineffective penalty. ;)
2. Lewis Hamilton: A repeat of Vettel's performance last year. Simply in a class of his own, actually overtook another driver for the race win (quite rare nowadays) and was blindingly fast on worn tires. All this while his team mate (admittedly with mechanical problems) struggled to overtake Caterhams and Marussias.

2 - Vergne: Proving again his worth. A nice charge for the points.

1) Jean-Eric Vergne: Normally, I wouldn´t consider guy who get two penalties for the same reason at one race as top performer, but it´s hard to argue with the end result as 6th on Toro Rosso is way above were Vergne would have been expected to finish.

2) Sergio Perez: Perez was quite invisble at the early parts of the race and wasn´t anywhere near points when he had that incident with Sutil and for a while it looked like he would be good candidate to get ROTR award. Still the safety car episode did help him and he used the opportunity and that´s what counts plus just like with Vergne, it´s hard to argue with the end result.

1)Sergio Pérez: The Flying Charro charges once again after Sutil almost blow his race

2)Pastor Maldonado: The silent run pay dividends for The Reverend

Honorable mentions to Marcus Ericsson (first time showing off, and over Rosberg of all people!), Lewis Hamilton (perfect run, followed orders and is now WDC leader again), Sebastian Vettel (finally getting the upper hand over Smiley) and Jean-Eric Vergne (stayed out of problems and scored)

The Clash of the Titans Award goes to Sergio Pérez for his charge and secuential overtakes in the last laps

Same here, only I quoted your post so I wouldn't have to do the accents  Checo will keep on enhancing his reputation with drives like these, and JEV should definitely be on the grid next year - I'd like to see him in a Sauber.

I nominate El Checo, who punched his way through from 15th to 7th and proves his worth.
Also worth mentioning is Pastor Maldonado's run. I guess only the car - an utter crapbox - stood in the way of scoring his first points this season.
Lest we forget about JEV, who is in his third year with STR and with Son of the Boss coming in for 2015 he tries to prove his worth in F1, and does so brilliantly.

I'm going to throw a little bit of a curveball in here and put forward a nomination for Kevin Magnussen for merely finishing the race - we heard during the race that there were problems with equipment getting too hot in the cockpit (with Kevin saying that his drink was burning his moth when he tried to drink), and now it has emerged that the build up of heat was so severe that Magnussen is currently being treated for minor burns by the circuit medical staff. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/115980

I'm gonna hand my votes to Jean-Eric Vergne (who was fantastic, barring a few "track limits" penalties) and Kevin Magnussen, who probably could have cooked a Sunday roast in the cockpit during the race.

I'm surprised Vettel is getting so little votes. He beat his teammate when he wasn't expected to anymore. That is what makes an IIDOTR.

1) Vettel
2) Alonso

Alonso put in a strong Singapore performance as usual, making the Ferrari look stronger than it actually is.

Vettel is a 4-time World Champion, let's not forget, and Singapore is one of his best tracks - he was within a second of winning 4 races in a row here. Not to underplay the fact that he had a good race, but is it really that surprising?

Indeed. I know Vettel is considered a poor man's multiple world champion but this is a bit pushing it. Soon people will start saying he is the new Nelson Piquet (when relates to driving).
