I would like to submit an early nomination for Perez and his spin on his installation lap.

Didn't see it, but if there is a typhoon going on, it shouldn't be that much of a surprise. I'm currently nominating race control for starting the race behind the SC (I'm being a die-hard here). In conditions similar in Suzuka to the 1994 race they start behind the SC, when 20 years ago they had a standing start. The F1 cars of today are tricky to drive but this is ridiculous as usual.

I just heard that the track owners Honda could have started the race earlier to avoid this but refused. If this is called off I nominate THEM for the ROTR!!!

Ericsson for spinning under the safety car. Likely to be the one humorous moment in the whole race!
Re: Japanese Grand Prix ROTR Thread.
Ericsson has put forward a very good case, but think I have to go with Honda, as officially it is their call to time the race not the FIA or Bernie's.

Race control: F1 can't race in wet conditions for girly reasons. It is the same condition of 1994 race and another races like spa in 1998 season and Fuji in 2007 season. It's a disrespect with the fans in the circuit and with the fans that are waiting for the race.

Yes, because not wanting 22 cars to crash on the first green flag lap because of aquaplaning and complete lack of visibility is a 'girly' reason. Right.

Also Vettel did say he was aquaplaning at 80 kph.

F1 had races in similar conditions in the past most notable Fuji in 2007 season. So, why not now? The safety improved also.

Do you not remember Fuji 2007? When they spent the first half of the race under the safety car? And in 1994, Martin Brundle hit and injured a marshal because of aquaplaning. It's no joke, the FIA is absolutely right to be this careful in holding the race.

Now that we're going to get a full points race must say us for nominating Honda too early! Perhaps Typhoon Phanfone could be the new nomination for causing so much trouble and yet ending up being an anticlimax during the race!

Definitely Honda. If they put spectacle/audience/profit above safety concerns then they have a lot of questions to answer.

Track management/honda. No idea why it was a 3pm start in the first place (I don't mean changing the race time yesterday - I mean why it was originally scheduled so late in the day when it gets dark early, especially on a wet day)

It was scheduled then so as to be watchable for Europe. At least, I believe that is the idea.

On the BBC's coverage, they stated that Whiting had asked if the race could be moved forward from a 3pm start to 11am because of the weather risk, only to be instructed that this could cause issues with the local infrastructure - so, at the very least, it does seem as if there was some effort from the FIA to have the race rescheduled.

Re: Japanese Grand Prix ROTR Thread.
I'm tempted to give it to humanity. Times like these show the worst side of humanity rear its ugly head - people desperately seeking attention, by spreading nonsense about a man whose life is in danger. People setting up 'RIP' tribute pages, using images of not only the actual crash, but his crash last year as click-bait....disgusting. Those who attempted to profit from the situation in some form, whether monetarily or in notoriety. There are some horrible, horrible people on this earth.
Re: Japanese Grand Prix ROTR Thread.
Whatever the outcome of Bianchi's crash, to me the ROTR is clearly one: FERRARI, no need for explanation here.

For the first 44 laps my ROTR was Charlie Whiting.
If the weather is good enough for Inters, then what the bathplug is the SC still doing out????
Then Bianchi happened and... Welp. No nomination from me.

Re: Japanese Grand Prix ROTR Thread.
Either Ferrari for demonstrating once again why Alonso wants to leave, or Charlie Whiting for not bringing the SC out on Lap ~39 when drivers were saying that the track was in a worse condition than at the start of the race.
Re: Japanese Grand Prix ROTR Thread.
How much better was the weather between 1 pm and 3 pm local time? If the weather was better, then we would have had more racing and safer racing. If not, we may at least have had a tad more light at he end of the race: Sutil suggests that fading light was a factor in Bianchi's unfortunate incident. Whatever, the race should have been scheduled for 1 pm as it was in the 1980s and 1990s.
As an aside, if the start time was put back for European audiences, that demonstrates that that is where F1's heartland is and there ought to be a smaller emphasis on flyaways races (say, back to 1990s levels). Otherwise, if F1 is not to be considered to have a European heartland, don't pander to it. Don't try to have it both ways.

The thing is though, FOM are only scheduling race times this way so they can maximize TV revenue. They don't care the slightest bit about a European heartland.

Well, this incident has highlighted the flaw in that plan then. And why does having that start time maximise profits if not to suit the European audience? Screw them. Safety first.
