Hmph. They reckon they're "going to tell the story thats never been told". I doubt there'll be any mention of Deletraz, Inoue, or any Hungarian drivers.
Nothing can top 'Driven' anyway. That could have been sub-titled F1 Rejects the movie.

If you take driven as a benchmark, then this movie might be watchable. Beacause I remember (or I think so, it's been a long time since I've watched the movie, thank god) that there is one good scene in 'Driven'. The one that's not acted, in which they film the actual driver's preparations for the race.
Edit: Just found it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW0hWeSoffI. Let's just say it's not quite as good as I remembered it to be (and much more 'acted'). But if you turn off the sound, it's watchable.
Edit2: Also, I would recommend skipping the second part of the video

That is a great part of the movie (probably because it features actual drivers). The scene where they race through the streets without helmets on (but wearing unexplained goggles) is so crap its good. And for me thats the point of this film; its so bad its actually good. Its open wheel Days Of Thunder, another truly Reject Movie.
A seriously good cars-going-fast film in only my opinion would be Le Mans.

What, like you guys don't see coins on the road and slide your cars over them to pick them up with your tires?

Whoa. Are mah eyes deceiving me or do we see Roberto Moreno and Juan-Pablo Montoya in the race?
Not to mention The Blonde guy has Mark Blundell's Lid, the guy with the girl has Montoya's and Sly has Zanardi's lids.

Well, I did it once but you can imagine my disappointment when I spun the wheel round and it turned out to be the lid off a party-popper.

Only just saw this page and link, bit of an anticlimax it being a doc.
SURELY Formula 1 in some shape or form can be shown on the silver screen without resorting to car film cliche. Even if it isnt the basis of the film.
OR, you could turn a racing film into a comedy of some sort, hell why try make a serious racing film only to cock it up with overambitious crashes and wooden acting (and unimaginitive charachter names like Rubens Massa or Fernando Algesuari).

Nobody would buy into that so you'd have to have Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell as two of the drivers and turn it into a farce competition.

If Bernie Eccelstone, or a Bernie-like figure is going to be in this, they need to get Sir Patrick Stewart to play him.

That's an insult to a fine actor whom I love dearly.
But you're right. Who else would play F1 characters....
Clearly Eric Bana would be Mark Webber
Matt Damon as Sebastien Vettel?
Hugh Grant as Jensen Button or better yet Lewis Hamilton
and so on, please continue

I bet in the movie Lewis Hamilton wins everything. And they wont put HWSNBM in the film. If they did ratings would just blow the box office!!

Aye, cast Will Smith as Lewis Hamilton, make him a single dad just trying to make ends meet as an international racing driver and you've got a hit on your hands.
Make Benecio Del Toro the bad guy in the form of Fernando Alonso ("I will kill him and then release confidential emails! Mwah hah hah haaah!"). Throw in a comedy sidekick, maybe Seth Rogen as Heikki Kovaleinen. And a love interest, maybe that tart out of the Pussycat dolls. Oh hang on, nobody would believe that part of it...

Re: F1 The Movie
Then we need Sir Richard Attenborough as Bernie Ecclestone and, perhaps, Antoine De Caunes as Jean Todt? Richard E Grant could make a small appearance as Max Mosley, Or even Ewan McGregor as Max (with a bit of make-up on) he doesnt mind getting his kit off in movies.

Re: F1 The Movie
The problem with all sports movies is that there's only two endings - victory, or honourable defeat, so a fictionalised sporting event is always doomed to fall monstrously flat.
As atmospheric and chock-full of great footage as Le Mans is, it's a really bad film. The characters are wafer-thin, the plot is just non-existent and It descends into Crash Pron on occasions which i really see as a negative. "Crashing's really bad, people die. NOW LET'S WATCH IT THREE TIMES IN ULTRA SLOW-MO!!!!!". It looks and sounds awesome, I love it, but I wouldn't try and watch it with someone who wasn't already a big racing fan.
Grand Prix, however, is pretty much the only racing movie i'd feel comfortable showing to someone who didn't already have an investment in the subject matter. It's a bit too long, but that's as a result of giving roughly equal attention to three of the main challengers (Barlini doesn't really get the depth of character development that Sarti, Aron and Stoddart do), By splitting the focus over the three, we get some reasonable depth to those three drivers, so it's not all that obvious how things are going to finish at the end of the season.

I coined the term "Lewisteria". The irony is that I actually quite like Lewis Hamilton.

Not really you unimaginative man.
Isn't it obvious, how one could make a good F1 movie ending? Real Life already gave it away. You have the hero who wins the final race and with it the title surprinsingly due to a Safety Car phase caused by a horrific accident of his team mate (injury optional). At first, everything is well, until the main character finds out that the accident was rigged and, depending on your place on the Sliding Scale Of Idealism vs. Cynism, either refuses the title and reveals the scandal or we see him in a bar, enjoying his success by drinking milk, while the camera zooms out and the movie draws to a closure
Re: F1 The Movie
Has anyone watched an early-90s documentary series about Formula 1? It was a French production, in the UK it was called 'The Saga of Formula 1' but I remember watching it in Portugal with the original French narration. Pretty much the definitive documentary on Formula 1, I'd say.

I don't know what all the talk is about, there was an F1 movie. It just didn't feature the teams, cars, or races. No, sir, just ANTSMSW5PG.

That crash in kostas' can be Captain Hammer's controversy at the front. It's seamless.
Now we just need a big ass budget, the compliance of Bernie, studio backing, actors, and a hell of a lot else, unless we do it on the cheap with hand drawn cartoons and Windows Movie Maker.
