Re: F1 Rejects Track Designing Competition
So, you know how Monza has plans to bypass Curva Grande and make an entirely new section of track? This challenge requires you to do something quite similar: to add/bypass a section of a circuit and try to make it good for driving/racing on. I will also look at how safe the new section is, and how practical it is.
Requirements:
Must be a permanent circuit you are modifying, and that section of circuit must also be permanent. I would also prefer that you stick mainly to the original layout you are modifying, but if you want to do something like what Tilke did to the Mexico City circuit, I'm fine with that.
Circuit must be between 4-6km (2.5-3.75mi) long.
Keep safety of the section in mind as well.
Tell me if I've managed to miss something/the rules aren't clear enough.

A combination of the original and modern layouts of the Bishopscourt Circuit in Northern Ireland (why are there so many airfields in County Down?): http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6914975

Looking from the fact that there are houses within the circuit, and small parts of the circuit do link a little bit of roads together, I'd argue that the course isn't permanent and so doesn't count. The rule here is in the gray area though so I'll allow you to keep this entry, but I'll warn you now I most likely won't rate it very high.

Re: F1 Rejects Track Designing Competition
In my opinion, there are two things wrong with the Circuit of the Americas. First of all, the top straight is way too long. Secondly, the "infield" section is just a little bit rubbish. Hence, I've lopped off a good amount of the top straight without compromising the overtaking points, and created a sector afterwards that is less of a complete Hockenheim rip-off (and perhaps more of a Nurburgring rip-off, but whatevs). This leads into a section that is now faster, as turn 19 has been opened up and now leads into a chicane, a nice place to get an overtake done before the start-finish line. This then leads into a final corner that makes the main straight the centre-piece.

Brands Hatch adapted: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6915409
Graham Hill Bend opened opened up to a faster bend, plus an addition to the Grand Prix loop, hopefully considered to be in keeping with the overall flow of the circuit, and entirely within the grounds of the MSV track.

Can't argue with Ataxia winning that - I rather like the new COTA. Out of interest, which corners would you have removed from mine?

I would've removed the 1st, 3rd, and maybe the 5th chicane (though if it was kept it would be reconfigured to be faster. I probably would've also made the turn 15-16 bit into one longer corner.

Makes sense; the first and third were both put in to slow the cars down before areas with limited run-off, and nobody likes that kind of corner.

And neither have I... Yet it now falls on me, so let's have a think...
Design your own interpretation of the Targa Florio, i.e. an extremely long circuit including treacherous mountain roads, both long straights and tight series of hairpins, maybe throw in some coastline. You don't have to tick all of these boxes, it's just an idea for what I'm looking for.
Oh yes, and Sicily's off limits. It's been done.
Have fun!

Re: F1 Rejects Track Designing Competition
Here you go. I'll bet you can guess where this is before ever clicking on the link. I call it the Targa Manna. Because
. Like the Targa Florio of 1912-14 and 1948-50, it takes in much more than the Mountain course, it takes in the whole island from the north to south, and from east to west. It is also close to twice the length of the Mountain course. It includes several promenades and quays in Douglas, Castletown, Port Erin, Peel and Ramsey. It goes right past a castle wall, just as the new F1 track in Baku does (it's probably equally as narrow at that point!). I had considered avoiding the mountain section and taking the coastal route from Ramsey to Douglas (via Laxey), a section I love, but I thought I would stay within the theme and keep the mountain (and thus the Ramsey hairpin) in. I cannot imagine this being anything other than a time trial, like the Targa and the TT.

Re: F1 Rejects Track Designing Competition
Funnily enough, I designed a circuit a couple of hours ago which fit these regulations despite having only seen this thread's challenge for 5 minutes.
http://www.mappedometer.com/?maproute=545167
Moving away from the mountains this challenge idea originated from, this circuit instead tears through the hilly Australian bush, and a very, very, long and fast 'link' road that heads through one of the main motorways of the city. Also very narrow too, and a lot of the circuit lacks any sort of barriers, so one mistake could go dangerously wrong.

Don't usually get involved in these long track designs but I had an idea this time! Introducing the Scarborough Florio, incorporating Oliver's Mount (one for the bike enthusiasts). Only just over half the length of the Targa Florio but still packs a challenge, with plenty of elevation change.

I wasn't really expecting to win that, even though the track is one of my favourite road trips that I like to take.

Sorry Normal, but:
1. That is absolutely nowhere near the Laon-Covron military airbase that Jonathan Palmer has bought, and which is the basis of this challenge;
2. That is just a smigin over the maximum 5.50 mile length.
