No Europeans Alternate Championship

Because I'm rather enjoying all these alternate Championships (as you can tell by the fact that I've ended up doing 42 seasons of them in the space of four days) I'm going to start one more, which I'll also update. And they will all get updated, because I have an "at least one BSMF season per day" resolution to keep to this year, and I intend to do exactly that.

As always, GROUND RULES:
- The points system will be whatever was used in the day, though I'll be excluding the fastest lap points because there simply won't be enough data.
- The Indy 500 will count, because there are so many non-European drivers in it.
- Drivers with dual nationality who choose to represent a European nation despite being eligible for a non-European nation might be eligible for half-points. I've not decided yet.

No surprises here - Fangio was the class of the field. Jose Froilan Gonzalez failed repeatedly to complete a race distance for Scuderia Achille Varzi, so never mind. The other Grand Prix drivers who failed to get on the scoreboard included Harry Schell and Alfredo Pian at the Monaco Grand Prix.

With Fangio missing the 1952 season to injury, the Championship was literally open to anyone (so long as they weren't European of course. Bianco, Bira, Cantoni, Gaze, Gonzalez, Landi and Schell all had a good go at it, but of all of them only Bira was able to complete two race distances. The fact that he managed to retain the lead for both was an added bonus.

There were a lot more points scorers here than I was expecting, not least because Fangio appears to have brought half of Argentina into Formula One with him. Others who failed to score included Landi (Brazil), Menditiguy, Birger, Cruz (all Argentina) and Fitch (USA), as well as the rest of the Indy 500 field.

It's not that the other drivers "in theory don't exist" but rather that they are there but ineligible. After all, how would you explain retirements when a non-European collides with a European in this championship? Like in my anti-clockwise championship, I don't say that half of Suzuka doesn't exist, because it would still have an impact on what happens in each Japanese Grand Prix at the track, so half-points acknowledges reality.

As for Hamilton et al., I would go by their given nationalities. But depends on whether there will be shortages of drivers in some years. But if you include Lewis, you WILL have some years where he dominate. BUT BE CONSISTENT. Don't include them some years and not others.

In his most dominant season yet, Fangio effectively won by twice the distance his points tally suggests. The best five results rule robbed him of another 20 points atop the 40 that counted for his Championship tally; his raw total of 60 points was almost as many as the next four drivers below him added together. The only driver who failed to register any points (other than the Indy 500 strays) was Argentina's Clemar Bucci.

I know I said this last year, but this really was Fangio's most dominant season yet. The only race winner other than Fangio was Bill Sweikert in the Indy 500, a race not entered by Fangio. This time, he almost matched the points tally of the next six drivers in the Championship table. Gonzalez, Iglesias. Birger, Bucci (all Argentina), Brabham (Australia), Schell (United States) and Uria (Uruguay) joined most of the Indy 500 winners in failing to score.

A remarkable season of attrition in which there was only one race (besides the Indy 500) saw more than one car still running at the finish. Also notable is that this is one of history's few Grands Prix with two winners: the Uruguayan pair of Uria and Gonzalez who triumphed in Buenos Aires. There were many drivers who failed to score points, due mostly to bits of car falling off.

Harry Schell enjoyed a superb season, coming remarkably close to scoring maximum points thanks to an impressive four Grand Prix victories. However, several younger drivers pushed him hard, particularly Jack Brabham, but also the likes of Bruce McLaren and Phil Hill on occasion, so it will be interesting to see how they all do in the upcoming post-Fangio era. Cruelly, Moroccan Robert La Caze was denied Africa's first F1 points, finishing sixth behind Bruce McLaren at Ain-Diab. Fangio was still unbeatable, but only entered two Grands Prix.

Jack Brabham became the new World Champion by quite some distance thanks to his Cooper-Climax being this year's best car. His closest challengers were Phil Hill, who out-performed the expected capability of his front-engined Ferrari, and Cooper team-mate Bruce McLaren. Remarkably, there was only one Argentine driver this season: Alejandro de Tomaso, who crashed his OSCA-powered Cooper in Sebring.

And there we have it: thanks to the vagaries of dropped results, Jack Brabham is crowned World Champion despite scoring fewer points than his team-mate Bruce McLaren. A relatively tight season ended up being topped by Phil Hill and Ferrari so comfortably that they didn't even have to attend the season-ending United States Grand Prix (which must nonetheless have been a shame for the World Champion elect. The Cooper-Climax looked like a shadow of the car it used to be, although in the hands of Bruce McLaren it was at least a regular on the podium.

Bruce McLaren enjoyed a season for the ages, and could have been entitled to over fifty points, but for the dropped-scores rule that limits each driver (in this case, only Maggs and McLaren) to no more than 45. Given that McLaren notched up as many of 42 of those 45 goes to show how well he was driving.

After four rounds, this looked set to be one of the most open seasons in history - the four different race winners (Ginther, McLaren, Gurney and Maggs) were split by just three points at the top of the table. However, it was at this point in the season that Ginther began to really stretch his legs and to pull out an unassailable lead at the top of the Championship, leaving the others to battle closely over second place, a battle eventually won by Dan Gurney on countback (he won two races to Jack Brabham's one).

Although BRM had the dominant car, they only had one at most races, being driven by World Champion Richie Ginther. Brabham (Brabham and Gurney) and Cooper (McLaren and Maggs) each had two regular drivers, who between them were still not able to overhaul Ginther's BRM tally. Despite an eventual winning margin of only seven points, this shows just how dominant the BRM really was this year.

That this season took until the seventh round of the season at Zeltweg Airfield for Richie Ginther to become the season's first multiple winner should tell you all you need to know about the even spread of the field in this most exciting of Championship years. Eventually, though, Richie Ginther won his second World Title in familiar fashion, by finishing every race of the season, almost uniformly on the podium. Even if he wasn't the fastest driver, it is hard to argue that he was anything other than faultless this season.

The hyper-reliable BRM car, this time piloted regularly by both Ginther and Maggs, made it back-to-back Constructors Championships despite spirited challenges from the Brabham and Cooper teams. It was also encouraging to see Ferrari making baby steps back into Formula One, as they are one of the most recognisable marques in motorsport.

After the first three victorious rounds of the season, the Drivers Championship was there for Bruce McLaren to win... but he did not. That this was the case is owed mostly to the highly skillful drive put in by the highly disciplined and incredibly successful Dan Gurney, who was unstoppable from rounds four through to nine.

The Constructors really followed the Drivers, with Brabham-Climax coming from behind and strongly overtaking the early-season pace-setters, Cooper-Climax. So fast were the Brabhams that they finished the season with maximum points.
