So I was wondering, what if the teams had permanent numbers rather than the drivers? Kinda like the 1974-1995 system, but rather than the world champion team swapping numbers with the next world champion team, they reverted back to their previous numbers. (I still think it strange to have seen both Williams and McLaren ran numbers 27 and 28 at some point in the 1980s!).

So what numbers would each team run with if they did have permanent numbers? Ferrari are already synonymous with 27 and 28 from the 1980s, and I still associate Williams with 5 and 6, and McLaren with 7 and 8.

Assuming that the numbers that teams used in the 1974-1995 era are the numbers the teams are most closely associated with, Renault would thus be associated with the numbers 15 and 16, while Sauber would have 29 and 30 (Sauber at least have had a more continuous history in the sport, but Renault could definitely be said to be a continuation of the 1970s/1980s team, despite being a rival of Team Enstone then, back in the day).

Toro Rosso are a direct continuation of Minardi, and Minardi had numbers 23 and 24. Force India is a continuation of what was then Jordan in that era. Jordan ran numbers 32 and 33 for two years, then used the numbers 14 and 15 from 1993-1995. As I have already given 15 to Renault, I would give Force India 32 and 33.

Mercedes did not compete in that era except as engine supplier to Sauber, and we can't give then Sauber's numbers. Numbers changed from GP to GP in Mercedes's first F1 stint, and have had variable numbers since their 2010 return. So... current Mercedes were formally Brawn, who were Honda, who were BAR, who were Tyrrell.... Let's give them Tyrrell's numbers, 3 and 4!

So that's 8 of the current 10 teams. Haas were a brand new team for the 2016 season, so have absolutely no history of cur numbers in F1 history. Unless I troll them with Beatrice Haas Lola's numbers? But Beatrice/Haas/Lola only ever used numbers 15, 16, and 33, and I have already allocated all three numbers to other teams. In NASCAR, Haas (aka Stewart-Haas) are associated with the numbers 4, 10, 14, and 41. Of those, only 4 has been taken. But all the other teams so far have pairs of consecutive integers. Let's come back to Haas.

Red Bull equally only have a history that goes back as far as Stewart Ford in 1997. They started with 22 and 23, then 18 and 19, and finally 16 and 17 for their first GP win. Jaguar too rarely ran with the same numbers for more than one season in a row.

I'll decide on what numbers would be appropriate for Haas and Red Bull at a later date, then if I have a couple of hours to spare, I'll allocate drivers to the numbers and see what that does for this year's title. (I'll still insist on the World Champion driver to use number 1 and his teammate to use 2, and that team would revert to their previous numbers again a year later, rather than continuously swapping with whichever team had the champion driver the following year.)

I wasn't expecting Sainz to pop up in third here. When I started this alternative championship, I was hoping a Minardi driver would get placed this high, but it never happened. This is what I was originally hoping for from this alternative championship! Just a shame that the team is now Toro Rosso, not Minardi. And Vandoorne escapes having one of the lowest points hauls of this championship (lowest points haul of those who actually scored points, that is. Although it is still pretty low to be honest.)

As anticipated, this was a Mercedes silver-wash, with Max Verstappen in a distant, lonely 3rd. Some might describe his season as being in F1.33 while everybody else is in F1.50.

For the sake of the constructor's championship, I have listed Force India separately, and calculated their scores pre-summer break, post-summer break, and as a season as a whole. You can then decide how the team sits in the championship (as separate teams pre- and post-summer break, they sit behind Haas and ahead of McLaren; yet combined, they only move one position ahead of Haas).

Antonio Giovanazzi is clearly the big winner from this, while George Russell was never going to change his position without having scored some points first. A clear win this time for Valtteri Bottas, helped by choosing a decent car number and a decent team to drive for.

But remember that Abu Dhabi debacle? It didn't have the same impact in this alternative universe/championship scenario. Not only does Lewis Hamilton remain ahead of Max Verstappen, but Valterri Bottas, in his last season at Mercedes, beats them both and takes the title! Phew, at least there is one place where the mistake of Masi is minimised.

Max, you did yourself no favours here by using the number 1. You could've been 2nd instead of 12th. And another year where Lewis's teammate beats everybody to the title. Still a Mercedes winner for the nth year running, but it replaces a real-world Red Bull winner, so there's that I suppose. And it's not Lewis year after year, so that's also something. Although looking back at the first post in this thread, Lewis hasn't won this for a few years now. His teammate does better by being fairly competitive and have a good car number...
And Nyck de Vries did alright against his Williams paddock stablemates, despite only doing the one race.
