On screen graphics
On screen graphics
Apologies if this has already been discussed, but whats happening with the on-screen graphics? Trying to follow the order of qualifying was impossible - no top 10 / drop-out zone was displayed, and it was very unclear. I see Jake Humphrey mentioned it on his Twitter. I hope its not quite so bad in the race - I don't want to have to pay £20 for the live timing app on the iPhone!

Re: On screen graphics
Strangely this seems to be a specifically British problem because the BBC is using the 4:3-safe TV feed. In the rest of Europe (at least i can vouch for Germany and Austria) we have the "real" 16:9 feed in which we only have the top 10 etc - zone in the left of the screen. Still, I also liked the old graphics better. Let's see how they do in the race.

Oh really? Why are we only receiving the 4:3 feed then? I was viewing it on a 42inch plasma in a shop, so we can't be getting the full feed

Re: On screen graphics
It's not a 4:3 feed, but a 16:9 feed that also works in Pan-and-Scan mode on 4:3 screens without ommitting part of the graphics. Why the BBC chose to use this, I don't know.

Talking of on screen graphics, Fernando Alonso has morphed into Schumacher and drives a Mercedes alongside Hamilton aparantly...fail

Re: On screen graphics
These new graphics must be a piss take.
Alguersuari's stop was showing as Petrov, with no time, whereas for Kubicas instead of showing the time they were in the box, they show the whole time in pit-lane?!![Confused :?](./images/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif)
If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Re: On screen graphics
I agree that the old graphics were better and that there is a lot of room for improvement. But i like the "whole time in pits" idea, especially as the time needed to change the tires is given as well as soon as the driver exits pitlane.
Re: On screen graphics
On a related note, can the graphics PLEASE be bigger? I remember when they used to take up the whole lower 1/5th of the screen... At least that was visible!

Because of people like me who can't afford 16:9 TV sets (cheap - mostly portable - TVs can be bought in that format in Britain even now, though for several years 16:9 screens are by far the most prevalent in the shops)...

You've never been anywhere other than John Lewis in your life have you? They're cheap, so complaining about the price is a dead argument!

John Lewis? That would be upmarket by my house's standards - we usually get our TV from the local TV specialist, two-thirds of whose products are second-hand (and even then, we tend to go for the cheapest one). Show me a 16:9 TV that's less than £40 (the amount my household paid for the last TV) and then I might agree with you. Where I am the 16:9 TVs are £99 or more if new and at least £70 if second-hand (not everyone is rich, or even upper-working-class)...

Yep, but they didn't always include the 'stop' time, so that's something they'll need to work on.

Re: On screen graphics
Not to mention the 'radio' logo showing when there were no radio feeds to be heard for much of the race.
What I found curious was the tendency to show the running order as top 8, 8 through 16, and so on. Why the heck not show the top 10 in one screen?

That's funny, because when I saw the highlights of qualifying ahead of last night's race, I could clearly see a chart marked "KO ZONE".

Just remembered that the graphics were showing Alguersuari as German and Glock as Spanish on the grid line up. Rejectful.

Now they only need to screw up the qualifying times chart like in Hungary last year and their misery will be well compounded.

Not everything was better in the 90ies. The graphics weren't. I want the graphics they used on digital tv back. Thinking about it, I want the whole F1 in digital tv package back...
I realize almost all TV is digital nowadays. But I'm sure you know what I mean anyway, right? I mean the graphics used, for example, in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-zEnO_KwDg
Re: On screen graphics
I think the most annoying thing about the new graphics was when it was displaying REPLAY when it clearly was a live feed. Happened a few times in practice, can't remember if it happened in quali or the race.

Agreed. But combined with the left-hand column of 3-letter acronyms of positions.

I love those graphics too, but quite a large part of that is because they remind me of the first 2 Playstation F1 games!!
I don't like the new ones at all, regardless of the information not being there or there being too much of it in some cases (ie how long did the pit stop take? I don't care how long he was in the pit lane!!) white on black is not good, very difficult to read while there's lots going on elsewhere on the screen, which...um...there usually is in F1!
