Re: Alt-1958: Italy in preparation
September 7th 1958, Italian Grand Prix
Stirling Moss was the big loser at the start, destroying his clutch just as the race started. Thankfully, his frantic waving alerted the drivers behind and everyone avoided the stricken B.C.M.A.. His teammate benefited, as Brabham took the early advantage. The Australian led the first lap ahead of the scrapping Maglioli, Ramos and Bonnier, then Collins, Marimón, Hawthorn, Phil Hill, Gregory, Simon and Surtees. Manzon soon retired with gearbox failure as Maglioli fell back to preserve his race strategy. De Filippis dropped out of her first race this season with a puncture at Lesmo, while Hawthorn also lost several positions in the early-race pandemonium. Surtees soon joined his teammate Moss on the sidelines with an oil leak. He now had to hope Collins wouldn't finish in the top two to keep his title hopes alive. Luckily for him, Collins was then in sixth position.
On lap 6, André Simon attempted a move on Duncan Hamilton getting on the oval, but Hamilton abruptly defended and Simon spun into the straw bales attempting to avoid the Brit. Race over for the Frenchman. A few laps past before Ramos began to catch Brabham and threaten to score a third consecutive race victory. In the meantime, Sanesi experienced electrical issues, followed by Volonterio with a gearbox failure and Masten Gregory with steering trouble. By this point, Collins was struggling to stay in the points, enjoying his usual experience of waiting behind the first few runners for the leaders' pace to falter. As Phil Hill and Heinz Melkus retired (suspension failure and oil leak respectively), Ramos caught Brabham and began to fight for the race lead. On lap 12, he slipstreamed past and began to pull away. Could the Brazilian score an unprecedented third consecutive race win?
In any case it wouldn't be Marimón who'd beat him, as the Argentine's clutch failed at the race's halfway mark followed by Berardo Taraschi's engine. Mike Hawthorn then had a spectacular but ultimately small accident at Ascari, leaving only 21 cars in the race. As Ramos continued to eke out an advantage over Brabham and Bonnier, André Guelfi was slowly but surely catching the leading trio. As Maglioli's engine also failed, Fangio was now in fifth place ahead of Collins, providing small consolation for Ferrari. Von Trips' engine expired soon thereafter, making the race yet more expensive for the Scuderia.
With ten laps remaining, Guelfi caught Bonnier and easily made short work of the Swede, confirming that his Nürburgring performance was by no means a fluke. Duncan Hamilton was the next to retire when his fuel tank leaked onto the track and caused him to run out. The fuel refused to disappear, and Maurice Trintignant skidded on the slick left on the oval banking. The Gordini collided with the banking's barriers and slipped to the bottom without rolling over. Mercifully, the Frenchman stepped out of his car shaken but unscathed. Another wave of retirements followed: Gallagher's electrics, Fangio's gearbox and Graham Hill's transmission, the last two from sixth place consecutively. By this point, González, Gendebien and Behra were charging through the pack to challenge for the last point, while Collins was catching the leading four, desperate for good points.
With four laps remaining, Jo Bonnier had to stop. His early pace had proven too much and he'd run out of fuel, casting doubt over the safely leading Ramos. Could the Brazilian make the end of the race? Gerini sure wouldn't, as he'd just run over Trintignant's debris and scored a puncture.
As the field stabilised, no one seemingly within range, it seemed the result was set...until suddenly, O.S.C.A.'s worst fears came true. Ramos came off the banking with two laps to go traveling at a snail's pace. The visibly furious Franco-Brazilian had run out of fuel tantalisingly close to a third consecutive win. This left Brabham free to finally take his first win of a difficult season for the Australian. André Guelfi was well rewarded for a terrific drive with second place, just ahead of Peter Collins, who takes a further step towards his first title. González managed to take fourth place for Rob Walker after a hard charge, while the very surprising Lotuses of Olivier Gendebien and Jean Behra took the last two spots, the former also sneaking in the fastest lap. Ramos was classified eighth.

Stuart Lewis-Evans - Connaught-McAlpine - Connaught Type C chassis 1 - O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 10
Despite our own-bulid chassis being slower than a beer barrel on wheels, Connaught will sell O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 7 to collectors to keep us out of debt.
John Love will enter the Moroccan Grand Prix under his own name, and will use O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 9 and O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 13 (if Petoli is fine with it).

October 4th 1958, Moroccan Grand Prix qualifying
The Italian Grand Prix dealt a major blow to the title hopes of anyone not named Peter Collins. Most of the contenders failed to score outright, though by all rights Hernando da Silva Ramos should have closed the gap to three points. When the O.S.C.A. ran out of fuel, it guaranteed that Collins would have a 13-point lead coming to Morocco. Marimón and Surtees, the other two still in contention, have to win both remaining races while Collins scores in neither. Ramos must finish on the podium to stay in the fight at all, while Collins can seal the title by finishing in the top two. All four contenders are indeed among the 31 drivers present on the outskirts of Casablanca for the season's penultimate race.

-Faced with imminent bankruptcy, Guillon Bachot decided to go out with one last entry in Morocco. As always, Bruce Kessler is driving the Lotus-O.S.C.A..
-Similarly, although they may yet stand a chance of survival, Connaught have brought the Type C for Stuart Lewis-Evans to drive.
-As always, we have some privateers. The prospect of an African race has prompted the best of the booming South African scene to appear: Rhodesian John Love driving a new O.S.C.A. and compatriot Ian Fraser Jones in a Vanwall-Alfa Romeo. Local Robert La Caze has entered a 1956 O.S.C.A., and Jan de Vroom is fielding two Ferraris for himself and Umberto Maglioli after the Italian was benched from the main squad of Collins, Marimón and Gregory.
-Luigi Musso having once again failed to impress in Monza, Bruce McLaren has been brought back alongside Hawthorn in the second works Cooper.
-Due to the costs associated with crossing the Mediterranean, Rob Walker deemed it unnecessary to send Dan Gurney to Morocco. Only González will be representing the wealthy team owner.
-After de Filippis' return in Monza, it's Jack Fairman who steps back into the Owen O.S.C.A. alongside Alan Stacey. More points are on the table, but the second car has been deadweight for a while now.
-Scuderia Centro Sud, away from their home race, enter two cars. Regular Gallagher is back, as is the surprising podium-scorer André Guelfi following his second place finish in Monza.
-Team Lotus, continuing its driver merry-go-round in agreement with Ferrari, will be fielding the usual Graham Hill, along with Wolfgang von Trips and Olivier Gendebien. Behra is left home, despite scoring a point in Monza.
-Ecurie Voeckler has also downsized due to the long distance from home and the damage sustained to Trintignant's car in his Monza crash, only fielding André Simon and Robert Manzon as a result.
-On top of the teams reducing their presence, several have outright decided not to appear at all, including Scuderia Ugolini, MSG Köthen and Alexander Racing Team.
With 28 spots on Sunday's grid, three drivers will fail to make the cut. There may well be competition for the last spots!

Just for the record, I would like any of my drivers (out of Kessler, Lewis-Evans and Love) who qualify to have a fast start strategy.

Qualifying results
1. Hernando da Silva Ramos (O.S.C.A.) - 2:23.39
2. Peter Collins (Ferrari) - 2:23.44
3. Stirling Moss (B.C.M.A.) - 2:24.19
4. Masten Gregory (Ferrari) - 2:24.82
5. Onofre Marimón (Ferrari) - 2:26.08
6. Robert Manzon (Gordini) - 2:26.59
7. Alan Stacey (B.C.M.A.) - 2:26.71
8. Mike Hawthorn (Cooper-Climax) - 2:27.36
9. José Froilán González (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 2:27.45
10. Jo Bonnier (O.S.C.A.) - 2:28.25
11. Graham Hill (Lotus-B.C.M.A.) - 2:28.48
12. André Simon (Gordini) - 2:28.71
13. Jack Brabham (B.C.M.A.) - 2:28.80
14. Wolfgang von Trips (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 2:29.80
15. Duncan Hamilton (B.C.M.A.) - 2:30.88

18. Redmond Gallagher (O.S.C.A.) - 2:31.54
19. Bruce McLaren (Cooper-Climax) - 2:32.12
20. Ottorino Volonterio (O.S.C.A.) - 2:32.29
21. Roy Salvadori (Vanwall) - 2:32.74
22. Umberto Maglioli (Ferrari) - 2:32.77
23. Olivier Gendebien (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 2:34.09
24. John Surtees (B.C.M.A.) - 2:34.32
25. Jack Fairman (O.S.C.A.-BRM) - 2:38.38

30. John Love (O.S.C.A.) - 2:42.10
31. Robert La Caze (O.S.C.A.) - 2:42.36
Though he has Collins right behind, Ramos puts himself in the best possible position to take the title race to Sebring. Robert Manzon surprisingly leads the Voeckler squad, the warmer air presumably helping the Marseillais over the Parisian Simon. Lotus also manage a good haul, with both von Trips and Hill in the top 15. B.C.M.A. got the worst deal, only Moss even managing a top ten start. Brabham, Hamilton and Surtees all suffered from lack of track time.
The small entry list compared to the grid helps the Connaught Type C to make the grid again, as well as Bruce Kessler's Bachot-entered Lotus and Jan De Vroom's Ferrari. Sadly, it was the African entrants who lost out as a result, with both Rhodesian drivers at least outpacing the most local of the all, Robert La Caze.

Is it possible for me to create a privateer entry for the United States Grand Prix?
If so I’d like to enquire about a car for the event

Re: Alt-1958: Morocco in preparation!
American GT Racer Caroll Shelby wants to express interest in an entry into the United States Grand Prix, having notched many miles under his belt in sports cars for Ferrari. Shelby wants to know if Ferrari can provide a rental or a special entry into the US Grand Prix based on his good standing with the company.
Any other rental offers may be considered as well.
(In real life Shelby did race F1 in 1958 and 1959, and I use that to justify this entry into this canon.)

Ecurie Maghreb will scrap or sell off its assets to any buyer interested in the team's assets.
If no one else has a contract with André Guelfi for the Moroccan and US Grand Prix, he would be interested in the rental or purchase of a chassis and engine, with subsidies provided by the Moroccan government to ensure that the chassis and engine would be paid for in full.

However, Morocco still wishes to cultivate Moroccan talent for Grand Prix racing. For André Guelfi, Robert la Caze and any other Moroccan driver, we will offer funding to let them race as private entrants, letting them use the money as they deem fit so long as the funding is used for racing in Grand Prix and other top-level motorsport categories.

Entirely possible, although the entry list for Sebring isn't yet open. Nothing stopping you from looking around, though!

Carroll Shelby was paralysed in an accident in 1954 (at least in this universe) and therefore cannot be entered as a driver. However, he can conceivably remain a team director, so as long as you find a driver for the entry, that's fine.

Vulture Engineering Inc. would like to enquire about whether the Cooper T41 & Climax FPF IV that Cooper Cars were offering was still available for the upcoming US GP.
Also Vulture will see if Roger Ward is interested in driving for us.

Bruce Kessler would also express an interest in loaning the T45 package, as Bachot aren't making the trip to Sebring.

Guelfi will take the T45 offer, and a Climax FPF V or FPF IV engine if any are still available.
Can I get a chassis and engine number as well for the private entry?

Scuderia Centro Sud give permission for Andre Guelph to compete under his own name, as SCS will not be partaking in the US Grand Prix due to budgetary reasons.

Re: Alt-1958: Morocco in preparation!
October 5th 1958, Moroccan Grand Prix
The entire top three started well, as well as Marimón, though it was Peter Collins who took the lead on the first lap. Ramos fell behind over the first few laps as Collins pulled away from Moss and Marimón, while Bonnier was the first retirement of the race when his gearbox failed on the second lap. When Moss retired from a puncture two laps later, Brabham passed Ramos as well to reach third place. The Australian had already made up ten spots in four laps. The opposite was happening to the Brazilian, who was soon left in the dust of André Simon and Duncan Hamilton. André Guelfi was next in line to overtake Ramos until his O.S.C.A.'s oven cooked up a serving of clutch brûlée.
While Ramos continued to drop down the order, Brabham was challenging Ferrari's 1-2 by lap seven, threatening to pass Marimón. Robert Manzon was the next to retire with transmission issues, leaving 24 drivers in the running. By the tenth lap, Collins still held the lead over Marimón, Brabham, Simon, Hamilton and Gallagher, with Ramos only eighth. It soon became clear that Collins didn't have much in reserve though, as Marimón began to challenge his British teammate for the lead on lap 14. Collins was reluctant to relinquish the leadership, but two laps later Marimón was able to blow past and reverse the Ferrari 1-2. Good for the works team at least, as De Vroom's private machine dropped out with brake issues. The situation appeared to be complicating as Brabham caught the leading duo, but the promised battle fizzled out before it could even begin. The B.C.M.A. contracted acute gearbox failure and the Australian was out of the race.
André Simon inherited third place, but he was by no means safe. Duncan Hamilton, Redmond Gallagher and John Surtees were all knocking on the Frenchman's door, desperate for a taste of a podium spot. The first man to take advantage was Gallagher, who launched a lunge on lap 20 to pass both Hamilton and Simon for third position. Hamilton took the opportunity to follow the Irishman through into fourth. Further behind, a fight was developing for seventh between Hawthorn, Ramos, Volonterio and a sensational Bruce Kessler. While these fights continued, the race lost another competitor when Wolfgang von Trips' engine began to spew smoke from the wrong orifices.
Something else that was evaporating was Ramos' title shot, as despite his obvious pace, he was mired in the midfield battle and unable to catch the leaders. Further ahead, Redmond Gallagher was having the opposite problem, attempting to pull off a heroic defense against the faster Hamilton and Surtees. Hamilton failed to spot an opening for ten laps, but once Surtees was given the opportunity, the young gun immediately breezed past the O.S.C.A. man. Hamilton followed suit, leaving Gallagher and Simon to fend off the charging Ramos and González. While this happened though, the back third of the field was imploding.
Masten Gregory's Ferrari got an oil leak mid-charge through the field, followed by Bruce McLaren's transmission, Olivier Gendebien's electrics and Juan Manuel Fangio and Jack Fairman's gearboxes. By this point, only sixteen drivers remained. González was sixth of them after passing Simon with ten laps remaining, ruthlessly gaining ground on the leaders. While the Argentine passed Gallagher, Ramos remained stuck behind Simon lap after lap as his title aspirations suffocated.
After a dozen laps of trying, Duncan Hamilton finally managed to pass John Surtees again, reigniting his hopes for a first podium, but his day was not over yet. González was now just behind the B.C.M.A. duo and was hoping to dispatch them fast. He very much did so, slipping past the Brits with five laps to go. He now had to catch the leading Ferraris, and he certainly had the pace for it. As the final lap started, the man they call the Pampas Bull was more threatening than he'd ever been, desperate for a race victory after eleven podiums. He soon passed Collins and briefly passed Marimón as well, but a mistake exiting the final corner allowed Marimón to pull alongside...and edge ahead for the win by just a few inches. It mattered little to Ferrari or Collins though, as the Brit's third place finish was enough to secure his first World Drivers' Championship. Unable to extricate himself from enough battles, Ramos finished the race fourth, ahead of Mike Hawthorn and Ottorino Volonterio, while Hamilton and Surtees dropped to seventh and eighth.

Re: Alt-1958: Morocco in preparation!
After discussing with Ferrari's owner (DemocalypseNow) Carroll Shelby will run a rental entry for Ferrari under his own name, but Ferrari will not disclose what chassis and engine they will send until management confirms if 1953 champion Tony Bettenhausen is cleared to return to Formula 1 or not.
If Bettenhausen takes the seat, Shelby will take the following entry for Sebring:
Team Name: Carroll Shelby
Driver: Tony Bettenhausen
Chassis: Ferrari 246 chassis 5 (Lease)
Engine: Ferrari 143 engine 5 (Lease)

Re: Alt-1958: Morocco in preparation!
SCUDERIA FERRARi, CAMPIONE DEL MONDO DEL 1958!
La Gazzetta Dello Sport wrote:The ultimate comeback: Ferrari sweeps all three F1 titles, three years after nearly going bust
Only three years after the Scuderia Ferrari racing outfit almost fell to pieces amid a tax battle with the Italian government, the Prancing Horse has secured a trio of Formula 1 world titles at the Moroccan GP; both the Constructors' and Teams' titles, along with the all-important Drivers' championship with Peter Collins.
After losing its star driver Jack Brabham for 1955 and no new car ready in time for the upcoming season, Ferrari was in crisis three years prior. But, hard graft from new part-owner Grupo Bizzarri and Enzo himself has revitalised the fortunes of the red team, culminating with the ultimate prize in 1958.
"It is an incredible turnaround by our boys," commented the team's sporting director Simone Bizzarri. "We were in a dark moment three years ago. But we never lost hope. We have worked to rebuild this team and, in 1958, put faith in three new drivers to spearhead our line-up.
"I have to thank all the drivers for their efforts. They have been incredible. We knew Collins had title potential and he has confirmed it with great performances this year.
"But also extremely impressive is a Ferrari driver also sitting second in the championship with one round remaining. We saw the raw talent in Onofre [Marimon] and he's used it to great effect this year with two wins. And Masten, so young, is already a protagonist with podium finishes. It is a matter of time until his first win."
With all three championships now mathematically wrapped up, Ferrari can in theory skip the season finale at Sebring. But Bizzarri indicated their job is not done, even with all three titles sewn up.
"It depends. We want to defend Onofre's second position. If O.S.C.A. takes Ramos, Marimon will follow. Our good friend and business partner Luigi Chinetti will also be participating with his North American Racing Team, with Masten and Phil Hill both racing for him.
"But Collins, he is a world champion now. I think he deserves the weekend off, don't you?"
