Predicament Predictions - 2010 Australian Grand Prix

Post by TomWazzleshaw »

Round 2 and the Formula 1 circus rolls on to the Great Southern Land for the QANTAS Australian Grand Prix. This round introduces a new concept to the predicament predictions championship as well as the hotly debated double points option. Anyways to the business at hand:
Wizzie's Predictions
2010 Australian Grand Prix:
1. Alonso
2. Vettel
3. Rosberg
4. Massa
5. Webber
6. Kubica
7. Hamilton
8. Schumacher
9. Button
10. Kobayashi

Pole: Vettel
Fastest lap: Alonso
First Retirement: Sutil
ROTR: Sutil (For throwing away a top 10 start by binning it on lap 1  )
IIDOTR: Kubica (That Renault doesn't deserve to be there)
DBTMOTR: De La Rosa (Eliminated in Q1 and generally the slowest out of the top 9 teams all weekend)
Minor League Premiership (Driver): Kobayashi
Minor League Premiership (Team): Lotus
Not using double points for this round

Double points works like this:
Each Participant in this championship has 1 double points round per season which they can use from this round onwards (I didn't elaborate on this in round 1 because it would have confused alot of people becasue the DBTMOTR explanation was enough to digest as it is). I wouldn't recommend using double points if you submit your predictions late for that round as not only does it double any points you get but it also doubles any penalty you get (i.e instead of losing 10 points for a late submission you lose 20 points). It's entirely up to the participant when they want to use it and they can change their mind at any time until the deadline for that round when that is locked in.

I only split the 2 Minor League Premiership predictions because it's alot easier to predict the best newbie team than the best newbie driver. A new driver is anyone who's participating in their First full season of Formula 1(Therefore Kobayashi and Alguersuari can be picked as well)

Although I didn't throw my hat into the ring last time around, this time I might have a go at it (although wait and see this backfire spectacularly).

2010 Australian Grand Prix:
1. Vettel
2. Alonso
3. Massa
4. Webber
5. Hamilton
6. Rosberg
7. Button
8. Schumacher
9. Kubica
10. Sutil

Pole: Vettel
Fastest lap: Alonso
First Retirement: Kobayashi (an over eager attempt to make up ground at the start will probably end in tears and a DNF).
ROTR: Jaime Alguersuari (I expect that he will probably fail to get out of Q3 again, and that he will be beaten by Buemi as a result).
IIDOTR: Kubica (will probably drag the Renault into the top 10, although I can see Petrov having a decent weekend as well).
DBTMOTR: Hulkenberg (I expect that he might push too hard again and overcook it - and this time around, the barriers are much closer, so it could well end in a DNF).
Minor League Premiership (Driver): Petrov (assuming that mechanical problems do not strike again (see the suspension failing at Bahrein), I expect that he could well finish just outside of the top 10).
Minor League Premiership (Team): Lotus (simply through reliability - I am worried that the other two teams could well fail to make it to the finish again).
Not using double points for this round

I'm going to put my nuts on the line here and suggest that there may be a big wreck at the first corner, Involving half of the frontrunners, leaving a few shocks behind it. Culminating in Webber's first win on home soil, and a smile on the face of Australia.

Much as I would like to see Mark Webber win the Australian GP (simply because the party that the Mark Webber's Supporters Club would throw would probably be one of the biggest parties that the Southern Hemisphere would ever see), I would be astounded if he actually won it.
After all, Webber does always try his best at his home GP (who could forget the famous 5th place he chalked up for Minardi?) - but, in the year when he potentially has a fast enough car to win, he has to deal with a resurgent Ferrari (where both drivers will be in the hunt) and a team mate who is going to be giving it everything to close the points gap back up to Alonso as quickly as possible. And that is before his fabled bad luck comes into play...
If it is anything like Bahrein, then qualifying will prove to be critical - and this is where I can see Webber falling down. If he pushes too hard - like he did at Bahrein - then he could well push the tyres too hard and overcook it somewhere. Equally, Vettel is very confident and strong in qualifying - so it'll be a battle to get ahead of him. Finally, Alonso and Massa are going to be going at it as well - Alonso will want to try and control this race from the front, and Massa will be keen to get ahead of Alonso and give himself a platform for launching his own campaign for the title. We can't discount the fact that Mercedes or Mclaren (and Hamilton in particular) might spring a surprise in qualifying (although I think that this is less likely - as Mercedes admit, the W01 still has problems with the weight distribution, and a lack of front end grip, whilst Hamilton admitted that the MP4-25 lacks rear end grip in the slower to medium speed corners).

New candidate Reject of the Race: CarlosFerreira, for backing Nico Hulkenberg in the Avatar Challenge and being forced to carry a humiliating picture in support of Windsor and Anderson for one month.

(No, this is not a serious suggestion. I'm still officially backing the Australian commentators for Reject of the Race.)

Hahaha! I so hope he does not pull another tank slapper in Melbourne, it was fun to see him take it beyond the track in Bahrain, but now I have some reputation on the line here. ;)

And for your lateness you get a 10 point penalty Ben.
Anyways points settings have been finalised and Dr Baker is the only person using double points this round.
