WELCOME TO 1991

As the cold war comes ever closer to its end, Maurizio Flammini could finally smile, for his World Superbike Championship finally made a profit. The sport is growing increasingly popular across the globe, with domestic series seeing significant growth and the models from the many manufacturers achieving record sales.



Every year, the Daytona 200, america's premier motorcycle race, attracts riders, teams and spectators from around the world to bask in the florida sun and witness the best in the world duking it out. Ome of the hardest races to win, Daytona challenges a rider's entire skillset, and only the bravest can hope to win this majestic event.




Meanwhile, WSBK are preparing themselves for its 4th year of existence. Almost everything is set, bar the calendar, for two dates are yet to be decided, while the round of Italy still doesn't have a long term host track for the next 3 years.






On the teams and riders front, we can expect Kawasaki to continue their stupendous form into.the new year, with the rob muzzy team looking like the closest challengers for the fast by ferracci ducati team. The ZXR-750 is clearly the best bike outside the 851 Strada, but the bologna outfit might have a new trick up their sleeves, for rumour has it that they will unveil a new bike with an increased engine output to 888cc this year in order to help Raymond Roche keep his world title.





Rob Muzzy and Kawasaki hopes to retain their constructors title winning line up of riders standings runner-up Doug Chandler and Carl Fogarty. However, the two young men have recently begun attracting interest from 500cc teams in the grand prix world!





Team Rumi and Honda, meanwhile, are expected to retain their lineup of 1989 WSBK champion Fred Merkel and former multi-time grand prix champion Freddie Spencer for 1991. The latter especially stated in the latest issue of cycle world that he is not thinking about returning to 500cc anytime soon.

Honda, however, would have to do something about falling down the ladder, as the RC30, while still a potent machine, is losing significant ground on Ducati and Kawasaki, and with the other manufacturers most likely also upgrading, Honda might be in for a tough year...









Suzuki and Yamaha comes into 1991 with the second and third biggest budgets in WSBK after Ducati. Hideo "Pops" Yoshimura and Steve Harris have said that they will invest "stupid money" into their bikes in order to move up the ladder. Doug Polen and Scott Russell are expected to return to yoshimura Suzuki, while the talented, but controversial Marty Bethridge looks to be the rider to lead yamaha forward.

Meanwhile, Massimo Tamburini has been hard at work to improve the disappointing Bimota Tesi 1/d. While it initally started 1990 with some woeful performances, crucial mid-season upgrades saw the bike be very competitive, with Davide Tardozzi and Alex Vieira putting it on the podium many times, the former even mamaging to score pole positions late in the season.



Norton had a very good sophomore year in 1990, with Scot Rob McElnea bringing the crighton engineered contraption to top 5 finishes and almoat getting a win at the round of france. We expect Norton to continue their steady progress this year.



At tbe end of year, the always entertaining Macau GP is held. Motorcycles has been a part of the event for as long as anyone can remember, with many of the top riders in the world going there to bask in the glory of winning this unique event.




Finally, the increasing popularity of the superbike class has brought upon the motorcycling world discussions avout whether or mot to ressurect the legendary match race known as the Transatlantic trophy. The legendary series between the UK and the US saw many riders turn into superstars, such as Barry Sheene, Kenny Roberts, Randy Mamola, Ron Haslam, Eddie Lawson and many others. Talks are already ongoing about Brands Hatch, in Kent, hosting the new iteration of the match race.

However, many people are wondering whether to continue in the tradition of having Britain and America fight for the trophy, or to expand the competion into a "North America vs Europe" format, similar to the Ryder Cup in Golf.

Alt-WSBK 1991 Rules

Chassis Building
Manufacturer entries are in control of the building and selling of the current year specification of chassis. In this case, manufacturers control the production of 1991 spec bikes.
NEW: The cost of the upgrades into a 1991 spec bike for a manufacturer entry, is of £50,000.
NEW: Building an entire new manufacturer bike costs the manufacturer team £200,000.
Building a new chassis costs £10,000 to the manufacturer.
NEW: Privateer efforts can now build their own version of a chassis as well. To do that, a privateer must have upgraded its bike to be different than the one they got from the manufacturer team. For example, Moriwaki Engineering building its own chassis out of the privateer Honda RC30 they received.
NEW: Teams on negative budget can build chassis and sell them
NEW: Teams cannot enter different vehicles in the same race (e.g., if a team owns a Kawasaki ZXR-750 and a Honda RC30, they can’t enter both. They can only enter one or the other).
NEW: Teams cannot own more than 4 different bikes. This applies to both privateers and manufacturers.

Chassis Market
The selling cost of the bike is determined by builder of the bike and only the builder of the bike.
NEW: You can't sell a bike with a value that is above its original price.
Teams can decide if the bike sent to the buyer is a detuned version or not. Detuning a chassis can happen in the following manners:
Engine: bikes sold comes at a 2-point deficit compared to its original counterpart.
Chassis: bike sold comes with 2-point deficit
Both: Both above are applied.
None: Privateers get the same version as manufacturer.

Used Bike Garage
NEW: Teams can sell their Bikes to a used bike garage for 50% of its original market price.
NEW: Privateer teams can buy bikes from the Used bike Garage from its listed price.
NEW: Unclaimed bikes (with no owner) will get placed directly into the Used bike Garage.
NEW: Bikes owned by manufacturers do not require to be placed into the Used bike Garage. They can be sold as museum pieces by £20,000, sold to privateers for a money that the manufacturer agrees or sold to the Used bike Garage for 50% of its original market price.
NEW: Inactive teams from a previous season (e.g. who are not entered in any single race) will get their bikes placed automatically into the Used bike Garage and will be disbanded from the alt-WSBK universe.


UPGRADES

Upgrades can be requested by both manufacturer and privateers.
NEW: Privateers can not sell their upgrades to any other team. That includes both other privateers and manufacturers. For example, Moriwaki Engineering cannot sell their custom-made chassis to, say, Hardwick Racing.
NEW: Manufacturers can only sell vehicle upgrades to privateers if they have the exact same Parameters . In other words, any manufacturer who does not provide a factory bike or that applies a penalty to its privateers can not sell their upgrades to them under any circumstances.
NEW: There will be three specific upgrade windows: after Germany, after Austria and after Portugal
Teams can only request a maximum of one upgrade (of each chassis and Engine) during an upgrade window.
Upgrade results are determined by RNG on a 1-10 scale. The higher the current stat number is, the higher the RNG number needs to be for a successful upgrade.


ENGINE UPGRADE: $150,000

CHASSIS UPGRADE: $120,000




Therefore, it is time to move into the next section of the preparation of the season, which is chassis wheeling and dealing!

For this section, teams from 1990 can choose what to do with their bikes from last year.

Phase 3:
Entries and Budgets
Manufacturer efforts and privateer efforts are allowed into the championship.
Each entry can enter a maximum of 2 cars per weekend, each with 1 driver.
A user can enter a maximum of one manufacturer entry, one full-time privateers and 2 part-time entries (including one-offs) per round.
NEW: Entries cannot be posted outside its specified times - start of the season and before the non-championship races.
NEW: Entries with negative budgets cannot perform monetary operations that involve the spending of money (e.g. updates, buying a new car, hiring drivers that aren’t pay-drivers, etc.). until they go back to being in the positive.
NEW: Bikes cannot be leased between teams - only sold.
Manufacturer Entries
New Manufacturer entries have a starting budget of £500,000.
Budgets from previous season carry on into 1991.
Each manufacturer entry must have two main riders under contract.
Manufacturer entries must enter 2 bikes in every race weekend of the season to be classified for the Manufacturer Championship.
NEW: If a manufacturer entry finishes the season with a negative budget, that manufacturer will leave the series for the next season, as it will deem the investment isn’t worth it given the obtained results. Treat your finances with care!

Privateer Entries
New Privateer entries budget will be calculated based on the following percentage of the schedule they enter:
>=75% - £250,000
50-75% - £125,000
25-50% - £75,000
<=25% - £25,000
Budgets from previous season carry on into 1991.


Riders
Both real life and canon riders can be used.
Performance for riders will be based both on canon results and real-life results.
In case a canon rider doesn’t have any previous background associated, he’ll get his performance determined by RNG.
Riders have a minimum wage of £5,000 per round.
Riders can be released of their contract, but the team will have to pay them their full contract worth in money.
Team owners don’t require a wage.

Pay-riders
Pay-riders do not require a minimum wage.
A rider can be classified as a pay-rider when it is associated with a certain sponsor.
Based on the sponsor, the rider will be determined to be a tier-1 or tier-2 pay-driver.
Tier-1 Pay-rider: Can bring a minimum of $40,000 a year and a maximum of $80,000 a year.
Tier-2 Pay-rider: Can bring a minimum of $10,000 a year and a maximum of $40,000 a year.
The amount of money each pay-rider brings to a team will be determined by RNG.
The amount of money each pay-rider brings is also calculated based on the percentage of races that he’ll run during the season.
If a pay-rider  gets released by a team while under contract, the team will have to pay them back their sponsorship plus 20% of that values for damages to sponsor trust

On march 10th, the motorcycle racing season starts with the most prestigious motorcycle race in north america: the 50th running of the Daytona 200 miles race!

Teams and riders from the AMA grand national series and around the world will duke it out on Daytona beach for superbike supremacy. From the twins 125cc battles to the superbike main event, Daytona is the motorcycle capital of the world!

DUHAMEL MAKES HISTORY AT DAYTONA


Montreal's Miguel Duhamel has made history at the 50th edition of the Daytona 200, becoming The first french canadian rider to win the event and the first canadian since Billy Matthews in 1950.

Duhamel kept his Harris Yamaha FZR-OW01 among the lead pack for much of the race, taking the lead thanks to an excellent pitstop and engaging in a battle for the win agaisnt Doug Chandler of Rob Muzzy Kawasaki, eventually holding him off for the win. This is Yamaha's 16th win at the event, an all time record.

The rob muzzy team looked strong all week-end, wjth Carl Fogarty scoring the pole position and the two ZXR-750s finishing on the podium, looking like title contenders for the World superbike title this year.

Meanwhile, Raymond Roche, reigning world superbike champion, had a really good first race at daytona, fulfilling his dream and finishing in 4th place on hsi title-winning 851 strada. Who knows how good fast by ferracci will be with the incoming 888...

The Yoshimura Suzuki had a bad qualifying performance, but Doug Polen and Scott Russell managed to still end up in the top 12, with Polen finishing 6th after a race long battle with Yaamah america's Jamie James and Russell barely missing out in 11th. If they fix their qualifying woes, Yoshimura could be a dark horse for the world superbike title.

Unfortunately, the race would have an event that almost overshadowed duhamel's win. Freddie Spencer, a former daytona winner and current team rumi Honda rider, crashed into the turn 1 wall and would miss the first 3 rounds of the world superbike championship. Being already bruised from his years of dominating the 80s in 500cc racing, it wouldn't be surprising if that is one injury too far for Spencer...

Donington Park

Easter week-end, 1991


Donington park on easter week-end is where 26 of the best riders in the world will battle in two races to kick off the season

The teams to beat this year, according to pre-season expectations, are Fast by Ferracci Ducati and Rob Muzzy Kawasaki. Ducati just released a new update to their 851 strada called the 888, with an increased engine output of their desmo engines. It will make its debut today, with reigning champion Raymond Roche and new teammate and former grand prix rider Pierfrancesco Chili riding them.

However, it was not the new Ducatis that were the stars of the show in qualifying, but Fabrizio Pirovanon on the updated Bimota Tesi 1/D! The italian would grab pole position from Roche and Chili in a dazzling lap at the end of the friday qualifying session, which sets up the grid for race 1 today.

RACE 1

At the start, Pirovano kept the lead with Chili jumping Roche for 2nd, while Doug Chandler jumped Bethridge for 6th sitting behind rookoe Miguel Duhamel in 5th and Doug Polen in 4th. It wouldn't be long before we have our first big incident of the day when, on lap 2, Pirovano blocked Chili's attempt entering craner curves and the two would punt each other out of the race and into the grass!!

Roche inherited the lead of the race, while Polen, Duhamel and Chandler battled each other for the podium places. Pirovano and Chili would have a heated, very italian argument while leaving the track, And in the pits, as well, things heated up, with Massimo Tamburini making his discontent known to Eraldo ferracci.

Back on track, Roche continued pulling away from the rest of the pack, while on lap 10, Bethridge attempted to pass Chandler on starkey's straight, but he went a bit too close to chandler, touched him and lost control of his bike.

While Bethridge went back to the harris pits cursing up a storm, a big battle for 10th place occured between Fred Merkel and Norton's Rob McElnea. At redgate, McElnea missed his braki g point and collected merkel with him into the gravel.

This meant that Raymond Roche would cruise to the win on the first race of the season, a debut win for the Ducati 888

RACE 2

for race 2, Doug Chandler got the pole for Rob Muzzy Kawasaki ahead of the surprising Anders Andersson on the old Ducati model as well as Pirovano and Duhamel. Roche and Chili started 6th and 7th behind the bimota of Tardozzi on row 2.

The start would see Chandler and Duhamel rocket away from everyone and duel together for the lead, with the two Bimotas following them closely. Chandler and Duhamel delighted the crowd at Donington with their aggressive riding and battling until lap 3, when Duhamel tried to pass Chandler on the inside at redgate. Both riders would end up falling off their bikes and into the gravel. This allowed the two bimotas and Roche to grab the first 3 spots and run away with them, the rest of the field struggling to catch on to the Italian bikes.

Of note are the hondas of Merkel and Hislop. The hondas have been the Ducati's main rivals in the first years of WSBK, but now, the RC30 is showing off its age, becoming off the pace of the other bikes. They ended up stuck in a battle for p8 agaisnt Marty Bethridge of Yamaha.

Tardozzi ended up passing Pirovano for the lead, no doubt due to team orders, and For the rest of the race, Pirovano held Roche at bay, allowing Tardozzi to fly away to score his and Bimota's first win in WSBK since race 1 of the round of America in 1989!

Jerez de la frontera, Andalusia, Spain.

A bright, sunny day befell the city of Jerez, in spain, on this saturday April 27th, 1991, for race 1 of the second round fo the 1991 World Superbike Championship.




On pole for race 1, Fabrizio Pirovano once again with his Bimota Tesi 1/D. The Massimo Tamburini designed bike is the surprise of this early season, taking the fight to their fierce rivals Ducati and reigning champ Raymond Roche with their new 888 machine. The Italian beat the frenchman by only 6 tenths of a second to grab the pole, with Bimota teammate Davide Tardozzi and rob muzzy kawasaki rider Doug Chandler being the closest to Pirovano and Roche in 3rd and 4th.




RACE 1

Everybody got off cleanly at the start, and some hard, but fair racing in the top 5 ensued for much of the race. Fred Merkel of Rumi Honda was the first casualty, the 1989 champion retired from mechanical issues on lap 10. On turn 6 on lap 10, 4th placed pierfrancesco Chili made his move, but 3rd placed Chandler blocks the door. Chandler, however, would miss the jorge aspar curve and fall down his bike, retiring on the spot.
Roche and Tardozzi upfront were dueling, while Chili, Carl fogarty, Tardozzi, Doug Polen of Suzuki and Miguel Duhamel of Harris Yamaha battled for the 3rd place spot. On lap 16th, Foggy attempted to pass Chili for 3rd on turn 6. He does so in style on the inside, with Chili even falling down on his own trying to accelerate out of the corner!

...and then, at Jorge Aspar, Foggy would miss his turn and fall down himself into the gravel!

It was now Tardozzi, Polen and Duhamel for 3rd. A lap later, Doug Polen would retire in the Yoshimura Suzuki pits on mechanical issues. Disappointing for the Suzuki outfit, who were on the verge of another good result. Tardozzi would turn up the heat and fly away from Duhamel. The young french canadian would try his best to catch up to the italian, but he would suffer a puncture on his rear tire on lap 18.

Up front, Raymond Roche kept piling on the pressure on Pirovano, and eventually, with two laps to go, Roche made his move and passed Pirovano on turn 6! Roche would then hold off Pirovano for the last two laps to win race 1 of the round of Spain. Tardozzi would end up in 3rd, giving Bimota another podium double.

RACE 2

Roche starts on pole with Carl Fogarty in 2nd and Miguel Duhamel and Doug Polen completing the front row. The race would end up being a duel between Roche and the blackburn native Foggy for the win, with an epic 5-way battle for the last podium spot providing a good enough alternative to the duel up front.

Marty Bethridge of Yamaha was at it again. On lap 2, at curva sao pons, he made contact with Terry Rymer of the Norton outfit Crighton Engineering, taking each other out.



However, the FIM, after seeing the tape of the race, would notice that it was Rymer who closed the door too toght for Bethridge, and would subsequently suspend the british rider for the next two rounds at Hockenheim and Assen in the netherlands. Former Grand Prix motorcycle veteran Ron Haslam has been announced by Brian Crighton as Rymer's replacement on the Norton RCW588 for those two rounds only.

Meanwhile, back on the track, Carl Fogarty and Raymond Roche exchanged the lead between each other, while Miguel Duhamel, Doug Chandler, Fabrizio Pirovano, Frankie Chili and Doug Polen battled for 3rd spot in a crazy rumble with many a three-wide overtakes galore.

Eventually, the pressure put on by Fogarty paid off, for Roche got slightly wide at turn 11, which opened to window for Fogarty to grab the lead! And Carl Fogarty would use the last remaining grip on his tires to pull away from Roche and score his and Kawasaki's first win of the year!




As for the battle for 3rd place, Pirovano completed a three-wide overtake on Doug Chandler and Miguel Duhamel to grab third and score another podium. Easily Bimota and Pirovano's best start to a WSBK campaign in a long while!

The chilly forests of Hockenheim hosts the best production bikes and riders in the world as the World Superbike Championship contest its third championship round. It is a track that, naturally, favors high-powered machines of all kinds, and that logic was respected in the qualifying sessions, with the bimota Tesi 1/Ds of Fabrizio Pirovano and Davide Tardozzi taking both poles for this week-end.

Both Pirovano and Tardozzi stis behind championship leader Raymond Roche in 2nd and 3rd in the riders standings. Will this week-end be the confirmation of their unexpected status as main contenders to the frenchman and ducati this year?

Not when the surging Rob Muzzy Kawasakis have something to say about that: for race 1, Doug Chandler and Carl Fogarty split Pirovano and Roche by qualifying in 2nd and 4th, respectively. The Kawasakis's setup looks like the perfect setup to extract the maximum potential of the ZXR-750's 750cc engine. Tardozzi, meamwhile, had more trouble with his bike setup, only taking a disappointing 13th spot.

The two Yoshimura Suzukis of Doug Polen and Scott Russell leads the second row in 5th and 6th, starting alongside the Norton RCW588 of former Grand Prix veteran ron Haslam, replacing the suspended Terry Rymer, and the second fast by ferracci Ducati of Pierfrancesco Chili.



RACE 1
Pirovano and Chandler kept their starting position at the start, with Foggy and Roche exchanging 3rd heading to the long straights in the forest, while Ron Haslam blasted off with his rotary-engined bike into 5th. Tardozzi as well had a great start from 13th all the way to 9th!

Of course, this being Hockenheim, it is all about the race of attrition. And attrition, there was, as soon as lap 2, where Rob McElnea suffered an unfortunate puncture on the back straight. Next, Aaron Slight fell down on the ostkurve, while Tardozzi would suffer mechanical issues and retire in the pits. Doug polen would suffer the same fate on lap 6.

Pirovano pulled away, scoring the fastest lap in the process, while Chandler chased him and foggy and roche battled for 3rd. Pirovano came close many times to score his first WSBK win. Could today be the day? It got even easier with Raymond Roche retiring from worn out brakes on lap 9.

But then, Pirovano slowed down at the straight, letting the muzzy kawasakis and Haslam's Norton through as he parked his Bimota on the side. Mechanical issues got the better of the italian.

No heartbreak for the Muzzy Kawasakis, though, for the two ZXR-750s pulled away and remained unchallenged through the last quarter of the race. Interestingly enough, Rob Muzzy opted for Carl Fogarty as his winning rider, for Doug Chandler, the championship runner-up last year, let Foggy through to score the win for the team, because the blackburn native is the closest to roche in the standings. This might lead to some interesting stories coming from the Rob Muzzy pits in the coming weeks ...




Ron Haslam completes a very solid race by scoring Norton's first ever podium!

RACE 2

Tardozzi on pole followed by Roche in 2nd, the two muzzy kawasakis in 3rd and 4th and Marthy Bethridge in 5th. This top 5 would be the class of the field in race 2, immediately pulling away from the pack in the first few laps. The rest of the top 10 battled all race long for points, with many overtakes galore. Up front, though, it split into two battles, with Roche and Tardozzi for the win and Bethridge and his lone crusade against the Muzzy Kawasakis for 3rd.

Bethridge and Foggy had a quite enjoyable scrap. The ulsterman and the blackburn native took turns tussling each other for 4th until Bethridge got him using the yamaha OW01 engine's power entering the stadium section



Bethridge would use that momentum to pass the other Kawasaki of Doug Chandler for 3rd at the ostkurve. Hockenheim looks like Bethridge's best track, and it would show as he pulled away from the Kawasakis.

Meanwhile, up front, Roche kept the pressure on Tardozzi as the laps winded down. The Ducati Frenchman would try his luck at the back straight, but Tardozzi held firm at the stadium section. Roche tried a second time at the ostkurve, ut again, Tardozzi would close the door. Finally, with two laps to go, Roche would go saido-bai-saido with Tardozzi at the backstraight and outbrake Tardozzi at Agip corner, taking the lead and keeping it for the last two laps to score his third win of the season!



Marthy Bethridge completes the podium with a great performance. The Rob Muzzy Kawasakis of Chandler and Fogarty finish in 4th and 5th, while Ron Haslam completes a great week-end for Norton with another top 6 finish. Suddenly, the suspended Terry Rymer's place on the Crighton Engineering Norton team seems in jeopardy...

Race 1




Pretty quiet race for the first ever WSBK race at the legendary Assen circuit, for Raymond Roche of Fast by Ferracci Ducati was not threatened at all through the 18 laps of the race, with Carl Fogarty and Doug Polen rounding up the podium.

Of note was Ron Haslam of Crighton Engineering, who was fighting Polen for 3rd for much of the race. The british veteran would unfortunately suffer from mechanical issues that forced him to park near the cows in the Assen field

Race 2

This race would see Doug Chandler runnign a one-man crusade against the Fast by Ferracci Ducati duo, finding himself sandwiched between Roche and PierFrancesco Chili for much of the race. In the last laps of the race, Chandler, perhaps feeling the pressure from Chili, tieed many attempts on Roche throughout the course. Finally, on lap 16, he went for the lead on the inside, only for his Kawasaki to hit the Ducati 888 of Roche and send him into the hay.

Chandler already had enough trouble as it is, having to pit for repairs, but he was also assigned a 10-second penalty, as well, Effectively not only giving away the win to Chili, who scores his first ever WSBK win,but also throw away hsi chances of a top 5 finish.

Meanwhile, there was a crazy 3-way fight between Davide Tardozzi, Carl Fogarty and Miguel Duhamel, with the Italain Bimota Ace ending up on the podium.

Duhamel, the french canadian rookie and Daytona 200 winner, has been considerably outperforming his teammate Marty Bethridge on the Harris Yamaha so far this season.

Roche has won at least one race in every round so far

THE FIRST UPGRADE WINDOW IS OPEN!

UPGRADES

Upgrades can be requested by both manufacturer and privateers.
NEW: Privateers can not sell their upgrades to any other team. That includes both other privateers and manufacturers. For example, Moriwaki Engineering cannot sell their custom-made chassis to, say, Hardwick Racing.
NEW: Manufacturers can only sell vehicle upgrades to privateers if they have the exact same Parameters . In other words, any manufacturer who does not provide a factory bike or that applies a penalty to its privateers can not sell their upgrades to them under any circumstances.
NEW: There will be three specific upgrade windows: after Germany, after Austria and after Portugal
Teams can only request a maximum of one upgrade (of each chassis and Engine) during an upgrade window.
Upgrade results are determined by RNG on a 1-10 scale. The higher the current stat number is, the higher the RNG number needs to be for a successful upgrade.
