F1 but it's F-Zero X

Oh, it's beautiful isn't it!

For years now Formula 1 has been sitting depressed in the shadow of everyone's favourite racing series, F-Zero X, wondering how the sport can ever reach the heights of that incredible championship. So I'm just going to show you how amazing (or not I have no idea

) F1 would be using the F-Zero X points system. The system looks like this for what it's worth.

No points for FL or Pole.

Notice: if you retire from a race, you get 0 points. This isn't like the American series where you get points for showing up. Instead, you will be rewarded for your consistency in getting to the finish. Therefore, reliable dudes like Nick Heidfeld will find they get a very good advantage from this, whilst the de Cesarises will suffer. Let's see what happens!

So as you can see already, this season really really REALLY helps those folks who can get their cars to the finish. Johnny Claes who in real life you have to scroll down to find his position in the championship, here jumps up to 6th! Of course, Fangio can win as many races as he wants, but if he doesn't finish the other ones, then he's in no chance of getting a championship.

The 1950 F0 Champion is Luigi Fagioli, who wins without even winning a race!

I should also point out that drivers who make it to 100m before the finish line and don't finish, F-Zero doesn't care, they will not score points. Drivers will not be awarded points for "90% race distance" or any of that crap. They didn't finish, they get no points!

So one thing I also just noticed is that real-life F1 has drivers getting half-points for shared drives. I'll do the same thing here as it will be an issue in 1951 otherwise.

It's incomplete below the top 6, but the front is what interests me mostly and I would get burned out putting in absolutely every entry. But here you have it: Juan Manuel Fangio wins the 1951 F0 Championship, whilst another Luigi, Villoresi almost takes it from him until the end. So many different championship leaders, although the real-life winner wins here too.

A very strange and disparate season with very few full-time entries. Only six entrants actually finished four races or more, and so by default their points totals took them up to championship contention and the top six. Alan Brown, who scored a 5th and a 6th in the first three rounds, took an unusual championship lead

Once again the real-life champion won, and so Alberto Ascari is our 1952 F0 Champion. Farina's career has so far seen him come 2nd, 5th, and 2nd again. Poor dude, he may be without a championship in the end.

A solid title defence by Ascari was for nought as Mike Hawthorn was just too damn consistent and stole the title at the last minute. I don't know what 1951 champion Fangio was doing because he wasn't doing well. Get gud Fangio, you're going to need better results than that if you hope to win your real life 5 championships. Why can't we all be more like Louis Rosier? Mike Hawthorn is the 1953 F0 Champion!

Well at least Fangio is doing well when it actually matters for him. The most dominant season victory so far, mostly because he just put in those top 4 positions every single time. When considering that nobody was realistically doing the 500, he got 96% of the possible points. Fangio wins his second F0 Championship!

Otherwise the biggest mover was actually Maurice Trintignant, whilst champion Mike Hawthorn had a lacklustre defence of his title.

Fangio wins again! Not just in terms of winning, but he's doing so well because he's not retiring all the time. Just getting that car to the finish each time paid massive dividends. Once again Trintignant got a great boost from this system, while there was basically no competition against Fangio bar Moss, who is now a thing.

Fangio wins his third championship, and is the 1955 F0 Champion!

It was over as quickly as it began. Jean Behra is the 1956 F0 Champion. He got the lead and never relinquished it once, as Fangio and all the others shared far too many drives and lost results as a product of that. Behra on the other hand just kept the car on the road, and even if he didn't win a single race he still brought home that glorious trophy.

Otherwise Paco Godio was the other big winner in this format, as his consistent high finishes bumped him up the order ahead of Castellotti, who was the biggest loser.

Fangio wins it almost by default, with Harry Schell being the only other dude to turn up for 7 races that year. It wasn't close at all, and F0 fans were treated to a snooze-fest other than at Silverstone, which at least promised a little variety in the championship standings

But there we are, Fangio is the 1957 F0 Champion whilst Schell is the biggest winner out of the new formula.

The last hurrah for Mike Hawthorn before his tragic passing, he dominates the second half of the season to take his second championship. Hawthorn is the 1958 F0 Champion! We had Luigi Musso leading, Harry Schell leading, and even Stirling Moss leading. Folks like Bonnier, Brabham and Schell all zoomed up the order with their regular finishing.

As well as this, Ferrari also win the very first constructors championship! It's easier to be consistent when you just field five cars

After leading a few rounds in 1955, he finally gets a full season together, and as a result Maurice Trintignant is the 1959 F0 Champion! Rounding out the decade, he had the consistency whilst championship rival Jack Brabham had the high scores. Stirling Moss turned up once or twice to win but then buzzed off somewhere else who knows.

In terms of winners and losers, it's relatively similar under the new system except for Moss dropping down the table.

Cooper-Climax win the constructor's championship, and when considering that the Indy 500 did not count towards constructor's, the team really won everything the whole season basically. Good job!

Jack Brabham is denied his first two real-life championships, as Bruce McLaren is the 1960 F0 Champion! It was a straight fight between the Kiwi and Innes Ireland. Brabham showed up far too late to make proper in-roads in the championship, then inexplicably pulled out of the Italian Grand Prix when that could have won him the whole season. Oh well, maybe he wins 1966, who knows

And for the second year running, Cooper-Climax dominate the constructors to win for a second year in succession.

It's the closest championship in F0 history! Whilst Innes Ireland was hit the hardest and dropped out of the order, Giancarlo Baghetti was nowhere to be seen at all! At the front however, it was two Americans who fought to the end to win the USA's first F0 championship. Had Dan Gurney won at home, he would have been champion, but instead by a margin of only six points, Phil Hill is the 1961 F0 Champion!

Phil Hill's defence of his title didn't go to well, because after round 3 he just refused to score any points, and instead let his British counterpart Graham win everything. In fact, Phil's title defence was so bad, he finished behind de Beaufort, who DNQd for a race. Otherwise, Bruce McLaren had yet another strong season, and remains one of the strongest contenders in this series. Graham Hill's title was the most dominant display of anyone ever so far, but 1963 is coming up.

BRM win the constructors.

Again, as in every year, the championship is about consistency far more than it is about winning. Moss never learned this, and John Surtees certainly hasn't learned it yet. This time it was he who finished behind de Beaufort, despite the latter again DNQing for a race. Champions Graham Hill and Bruce McLaren again challenged for victory, but this time it was Jim Clark who put in a near-perfect to destroy the competition. I don't think we'll see a championship like this for a long time, with that level of consistency at the front (I shudder to think of what 2002 will look like).

Lotus-Climax naturally destroy the constructors as well.

As in real-life, it was a first time champion in 1964. However, in this universe it was Richie Ginther who took it, once again through consistency. Surtees, and especially Hill, had obscenely good pace, but they just couldn't get the car to the end often enough. Same goes for the constructors championship: Ferrari lose the championship to BRM just through their lack of finishes. Therefore neither Clark nor Hill take it, but Ginther does. Good job to the American who had zero retirements all season. This also means that from 1956-1964 we have had a different champion in every single season.

It was almost total domination from Graham Hill. In probably the biggest "f*** you" to the F-Zero Championship, Jim Clark completely wiped off his chances of winning in 1965 by just skipping out on the Monaco Grand Prix to flaunt around and "win the Indy 500". Whatever he was doing, we all know that by missing a race you're almost guaranteeing yourself to lose the championship against a more consistent rival.

In the end, he still couldn't have brought back that points deficit regardless, so Graham Hill wins the 1965 F-Zero Championship, the first repeat champion since Mike Hawthorn in 1958. We've had many different champions in this time, it's been a very competitive era.

He does! Brabham, after trying for many many seasons, finally gets a season together to win the F-Zero championship in 1966. It was a low points score for everyone there, so even with the lowest championship haul since Jean Behra, Brabham's wins put him ahead of Rindt, the only other driver to finish as many races. Further down it was pandemonium of similar scores, so the runaway top-six are shown above.

Instead of the real-life BRM, it is actually Cooper who win their first championship since 1960.

We transported a little further into the future than intended. I have decided in coming back to this series, that I will rewind the clock from the present instead! We have the perhaps unsurprising fact that Max Verstappen won this championship on brute force alone, but his chief rival George Russell ran him scarily close for much of the season with his expert consistency.

The biggest winner by far in this format is Lance Stroll, whose consistent finishing rewarded him greatly. Those that were less reliable, such as Sainz, Tsunoda and the Haas drivers, were relegated much further back than they are in real life.

One year back now. 2021 had Lewis Hamilton winning it on account of fewer retirements. While further back it doesn't make massive waves, towards the front a retirement or two can kill a championship charge. With Mercedes ultra-mega-hyper-reliability, we may see quite a lot of these Hamilton championships for a while to come!

Sainz was a big winner, while Perez was a big loser. Norris jumped up to fourth in the title, while Ricciardo was actually very close to his teammate and the frontrunners here. Lance Stroll again was a winner while Vettel was a loser. Giovinazzi was the biggest riser while the last few places were a bit Noah's Ark.

You know it's a dire season for F-Zero racing when Lewis Hamilton wins by over four wins to the nearest non-Mercedes car, and then that car turns out to be none other than Daniel Ricciardo! Ricciardo and Norris jumped up the standings with their excellent reliability, while Perez and the Ferraris dropped down the order for the opposite reason.

Sadly the overall results of this championship were almost exactly the same as the real one. However, Alex Albon was a surprise beneficiary of the new points system, while Daniil Kvyat did surprisingly well (when you think that one-off podium wouldn't have meant so much under this system). A rather dire year for Romain Grosjean, while Lewis and Merc romp to another title.

Just as in real life, it was the closest it would be for a few years, although Hamilton won by over a win by year's end. Valtteri Bottas' season looks a whole lot better here under this points system, while those with terrible reliability look a hell of a lot worse. Especially Ricciardo, whose two wins have not helped him here. Nor so Fernando Alonso! He drops from 11th to 18th in the standings, probably the biggest drop seen in the most recent years.

F0 fans were treated to the most exciting season in recent years when the dominant and unbeatable Mercedes drivers came together to fight tooth and nail against one another for the championship. Valtteri Bottas, in his debut season for the team, was so so close in defeating his new teammate, and had the upper hand in all the final rounds. However, it was the metronomic consistency of Lewis Hamilton that again won the day. Force Point Racing India brought an incredible upset to finish third in the championship ahead of Red Bull, with the Bulls just having the worst possible reliability all round. Again the McLarens did not prosper under this points system

but Vandoorne beat Alonso at least!

It happened! Against all the odds, someone beat Lewis Hamilton in equal machinery

not just in Formula 1, but in Formula 0 too. While Daniel Ricciardo has to make do with probably the most impressive season of anyone yet to still not be within a hope in hell's chance of winning the championship, Rosberg's final year ends much in the same way as the real one did, albeit with a much bigger advantage for Rosberg caused by that Kurbelwellenlager.

Although Mercedes reaped all the rewards just as in real life, the battle here from 13th downwards is incredible. #justiceforgutierrez would be trending on Twitter if the season had ended like this!

2015 was a depressing year for Alonso fans, as it would continue to be in F0, where he finishes behind one of the Manors in the standings

the biggest winners in this system are Sergio Perez, who finished an incredible 5th overall in that Force India. Räikkönen finished the season four wins behind his teammate, while Hulkenberg finished three wins behind his. There was a massive gap from 9th to 10th, where Nasr and Ericsson heavily prospered from their own excellent reliability. Maldonado's lack of reliability came to bite him, as I expect it might throughout his career.

No, your eyes do not deceive you. This is the closest world championship probably in the history of F0. Or at least I can't imagine too many of these being settled by a single point! I had to recount the top two scores just due to how close they ended up being. Lewis Hamilton wins the championship at a climactic finale in which teammate Nico Rosberg conveniently falls to the exact spot which would allow his teammate to win the championship

Other big changes were Bottas' rise to third in the championship, Vettel's dropping down the order, Räikkönen's consistency netting him a much better place, and Felipe Massa's drop by four places down the order.

The real hero of the hour is Max Chilton

he finishes the championship ahead of both Saubers despite, as tragically so with his teammate, leaving his year incomplete.

It was perhaps unsurprising to see Sebastian Vettel win this with 13 wins over 19 races. It was perhaps more surprising to see the strength of Mercedes even in this early pre-2014 pace, third and fifth in the championship and very nearly runner-up to the champion. In probably the worst review of his season, Romain Grosjean finishes well over a win down on his teammate who did not even participate in the final two rounds. Knowing how important finishing is, Grosjean was never close to beating a teammate who was perhaps the central challenger to Vettel in the first half of the season.

Otherwise, Gutierrez looks a little better here, as does Max Chilton yet again. Someone like Chilton in a Red Bull or Mercedes would be truly unstoppable given the chance.

2014 won't be the only close modern season it seems. Kimi Räikkönen's incredible consistency put him within a hair's breadth of winning the world championship upon his comeback in that Lotus. However, a poor final round at Brazil buried his hopes, while Sebastian Vettel too found himself turned around by Bruno Senna and unable to make up the places to win the championship from Fernando Alonso.

In this system, Webber goes up while Hamilton goes waaaaay down. Unfair for Hamilton as he did have much of the measure of Button for large portions of the season, but reliability is half the game in F0. You may also have noticed that a certain crashing Frenchman dropped down the order, while Michael Schumacher's swansong was nothing to write home about. Maldonado's win was wonderful, but his season didn't lend the Venezuelan many points!

This is also the latest modern season where the champion's team did not win the constructors. Red Bull take that, while Ferrari's Alonso wins the season.

2011 saw a dominant Red Bull and a dominant Sebastian Vettel. Winning by two victories over his teammate (who fares a little better here), his only opposition was from Fernando Alonso, who through an extra finish managed to overhaul Jenson Button overall for the "best of the rest" category. There was a massive gap between the top five and the rest, while Nico Rosberg nearly managed to beat Felipe Massa in what would have been quite the upset. Again, Schumacher's retirements are to his detriment here, while Maldonado similarly suffers going down the order. Perez, usually known for his impeccable reliability, was even behind the Williams of Barrichello.

What a close season! When it was all over, three drivers were within half a win of the championship lead, still! It was very close between multiple teams, while Webber and Alonso took advantage of the poorer reliability on the side of Vettel. Hamilton's string of mid-season crashes sent him out of the overall running, while even drivers like Massa, Kubica, and the Mercedes were not that far off the top five by the time it was done.

Not a huge amount of interest further back, other than that Jaime Alguersuari seems to have prospered quite heavily from this system, and has now comfortably beaten his teammate Buemi twice.

It is the year of Brawn, and damn were the Brawn drivers a safe pair of hands. While they weren't always the fastest cars (or drivers) out there, the sheer number-crunching they did in every race was astounding. Button was able to sit in the top eight for every race bar one, while his teammate was only beaten over the aggregate time rather than in any one game-changing event.

The Red Bulls just couldn't cut it over the season, and Nico Rosberg became the standout star when he almost broke into the top 4. Only a late-season charge from Vettel put paid to those hopes.

In this system, Alonso Glock and Fisichella bump up the order, while while the Toro Rossos especially come across really badly.

It was a square face-off duel between Lewis Hamilton and... Nick Heidfeld? Damn! The BMWs were so damn reliable and so damn fast week-in and week-out that they actually won the constructors' title! Felipe Massa's early season retirements crippled him for the rest of the year, and he was unable to challenge. Conversely, Kimi Räikkönen's later season run of retirements took him out of the order completely. Folks like Piquet Jr. and Vettel fall down the order while Jenson Button actually beats Barrichello

So yes. About 2011 onwards we're seeing almost identical championships to the ones we have in real life. Longer lifespan of the seasons and uber reliability means that, with one or two exceptions, everyone is just as reliable as everyone else up front, so a system like this causes little difference. However, now in the late 2000s we're getting more and more issues for championship runners, and the results are starting to get a little weirder than life again!

Fernando Alonso was able to beat his rookie teammate Lewis Hamilton by just two points, while the cheating McLarens dominated the title ahead of the Ferraris behind them. Heidfeld wasn't as consistent here as in 2008, while Kubica's absences dropped him down the order. Barrichello rises up an incredible ten places from 20th to 10th, while the Red Bulls were so closely matched they were almost identical until countback.

Not too much change from real life in this one. Alonso was simply unstoppable and just put down any opposition with firsts and seconds. Renault very narrowly won the constructors, while Button perhaps surprisingly overtook Räikkönen overall. McLaren finish behind Honda in the standings, while Pedro de la Rosa actually beats Juan Pablo Montoya. Mark Webber had a real dire year, while Liuzzi and Coulthard can be very satisfied overall with their placing.

In one of the more dominant displays of modern times, Fernando Alonso takes probably his first of many championships after scoring podium after podium after podium. The only drivers really challenging him were Kimi, who had far too many problems to be of any real threat, and the Toyota of Ralf Schumacher. His brother Michael collapsed for most of the early and late season, leaving him behind even his teammate Rubens! Most of you will probably be very sad that Tiago Monteiro was not higher up the order, but five places up is better than nothing.
