Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Hungary 2024

Post by Londoner »

1. 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. Quite possibly the most hilarious comedy Grand Prix in some time.

2. Lance Stroll. Another race where he was better than Alonso.

Yuki Tsunoda: More points whilst Riccy gets none.

Lando Norris & Oscar Piastri: Goes against my normal views on IIDOTR, but I do have to note them for behaving better than their team.

1. The race. Hungary doesn't usually give us a decent race in dry conditions. That was not the case this year. Very decent race indeed. Very salty.

2. Yuki again?
Benetton of 1992. Never a reject

1. Tsunoda - the only person to try a one stop strategy, and he managed to make what looked like a sub-optimal strategy still pay off.

2. Stroll - Aston Martin backed themselves into a corner by burning through too many tyres earlier in the race weekend, forcing them to do a stint on soft tyres that were really sub-optimal for race use. However, Stroll managed to do what Alonso could not and stretched that first stint out just long enough to be able to claim a point at the end of the race (and only just fell short of passing Tsunoda as well).

Maybe Hamilton gets an honourable mention for the fact that he managed to finish on the podium despite Verstappen trying to yeet him off the track - I was expecting that to have caused more terminal damage.

Mclaren and Max for turning a tyre strategy snooze-fest into high drama with added petulant frenzy (thanks FZ).

I like this nomination.

Can't really think of anything TBH so for me it goes to the feel-good about a debut win for Piastri - even though the team screwed not pitting him first at the 2nd stop which could have avoided the end playout.

1) Lewis Hamilton - His 200th Podium when the odds weren't looking favourable for him to do that and surviving a collision with "Mad Max".

2) Oscar Piastri - I've been itching for him to win a "propper" race ever since his debut. Now he's done it! Though it would have been better if he'd been able to do it on his own merit.

HM: Lando Norris - That was his race to lose until McLaren decided to revisit certain parts of the DC/Hakkinen era...
