Defending three-time world champion Dixie Kong poses for publicity photo alongside championship rival and constructors' championship winner Funky Kong (no relation).
It's the series that's got everyone from Graham Norton to George Lazenby talking - it's Alt-Mario Kart and we're back for a seventeenth season! As we softly enter the fourth phase of this grotesque monstrosity, let's do a recap of everything so far.
News
2007's racing ended rather suddenly and harshly. Mario Mario won the Mario Invitational Championship at the same time that his old rival-turned-friend Redsaurus C. Koopamuncher drowned in a boiling lake of lava. The enquiry is ongoing and threatens to overshadow the charity football match which, trust me, is coming at some point. Mario Mario's own son Mario Mario Jr. (a.k.a. Mario Toadstool a.k.a. Baby Mario) was involved in a terrible somersault crash that dislocated and fractured all of his limbs and bones. As he currently undergoes recovery therapy, his future in racing has been cut prematurely.
Mitsuyoshi won the Mario Kart championship for the third time, and for the third time in the hands of their superstar Dixie Kong. Since the accession of Yoshisaur T. Munchakoopas to the MKDA representative role again, Dixie has been on another planet, and her six wins is the most since Wario Jumpman took the same number in 1998, and seven in 1997. Her teammate Toad Toadstool has been signed up for another two years, with some caveats. He was also mega-fast, but inconsistent when he was needed. With the most dominant Cup ever in Mario Kart history to round out the year, he has at least given himself a springboard for another shot at the title.
The DPRK team were second overall, but it was a distant second. Their early season pace didn't last, and Peach Toadstool especially had a dreadful middle section that must rank among the worst in the championship's history. Lemmy Koopa too was inconsistent, and only started catching up with her teammate in the final stages. With no other strong opposition, the team were runner-up but will need to do more. Lemmy is gone and replaced by Waluigi. One wonders just how much time Peach has left in her, however, and her return for 2008 has raised some eyebrows.
Equipe Luigier, there is a lot to say about them. Since early 2006 they have operated a spend, spend, spend policy, which has reaped dividends as they have gone from a distant 8th overall to 3rd last year. Both Luigi Mario and Waluigi took a victory each, and for large amounts of the year they seemed like the best of the rest behind Mitsuyoshi overall. However, now with the rule changes, it's anyone's guess how the money situation is actually going to develop. Waluigi, who has left for DPRK, was probably the stronger of the two drivers, or at least the younger. Now, a 40-year-old Luigi is going to have to build up that team yet again with a younger hopeful.
Galactic Kong Racing is the successor to the short-lived Koopra Kids team that never seemed to hire any Koopas. With a name change, ownership change, and an everything change, Galactic are being run by Chunky Kong in his latest escapade. Larry Koopa has been re-signed along with the new hire of Goombella. Between them, they could be a solid pairing, though the actual quality of the kart with such a new team is unknown.
Red Bowser Racing have been a lot more interesting since Donkard Kong Jr. was hired to become team principal. The driver choices have been a lot more daring, and with their recent upper-midfield status, they have had some years to get back some of their old reputation and become a little less unpopular. Banjo-Kazooie was probably a step too far, and after just one year in the seat, they were fired to make way for the Australian Mark Wiggler, who won last year's Formula Power Flower championship. Wiggler has been in and out of Mario Kart for years, and with the giantkiller Bowser Jr. alongside him, he will be jumping into the fire now.
Rather embarrassingly, Koopra Sport finished two places behind the customer Koopra Kids team last season. Kooper Troopa didn't get in the key driver signings or chassis upgrades when they were most needed, and in spite of her speed, even stars like Kokkoro Toudou found it hard to stay motivated. Pacman Beaneater has had a year under his belt, though even with three podiums it's hard to determine his overall pace. The team remain a grey area for 2008.
The best of the rest, if that's what we can call them, were King Boo Motorsports. King Boo himself took second place at the meme round of the Bahrain Grand Prix, and the combined 9 points on top of Goombella's 1 meant that KBM could beat even Birdette Racing on countback. Will this funding be the breakthrough that the controversial team principal needs to get his Mario Kart team off the ground? And who will drive the kart now that Wiz Pig is gone?
The aforementioned Birdette Racing is no more. The team struggled for some seasons but has now seen fit to accept a purchase by the Saurus Group. This will effectively turn them into a Mitsuyoshi b-team. Birdetta Birdo remains as the team principal, and it looks as though the re-signed Toadette will have to run part-time as Yoshisaur's new favourite son Yellowsaurus will take the wheel at least for part of the season.
Also changing is the new Save Our Paras - Mario team that is succeeding Project Mario. A takeover by an unnamed Chinese conglomerate sees the proud name of Mario Mario almost disappear and his employee now become his employer. Para Troopa becomes team principal and lead driver, while the group are looking to hire youngster Sonic T. Hedgehog as part of a publicity stunt to coincide with the upcoming Beijing Olympics. Will the 17-year-old Sonic be able to break the rules and enter Mario Kart?
And finally Crygorti Corse. They had a serious sophomore slump in 2007 with no points. Penny Crygor, granddaughter of team boss Victor Crygor, only qualified six times, while mainstay Robert O. Buddy qualified every time but still didn't score. It's not quite the rise from the bottom the team were hoping for, and 2008 may be a do or die season. Junior series winner Koops van Petalburg now becomes the team's second driver, and with some quality drivers they could finally rise up from the bottom.
