They drove that car?

Post by Har1MAS1415 »

A thread dedicated to forgotten rides with certain teams by well known drivers, or perhaps a lesser known driver driving for a well known team. The concept of this thread is based on the many fill in drivers we have seen in all forms of motorsports.

To start off....
Image
....Arturo Merzario had a one-off outing with Shadow at Austria in 1977, overshadowed (pardon the pun) by team-mate Alan Jones scoring Shadow's only win, "Little Art" retired with gearbox problems after 29 Laps.

It's only just over 10 years ago, but easy to forget both Jerome D'Ambrosio and Heikki Kovalainen getting a go in what was then a decent Lotus.

Feel free to branch out into other motorsports.

For example:

Motorcycling legend Barry Sheene raced a TWR Mazda RX-7 in the first meeting of the 1981 British Saloon/Touring Car Championship at Mallory Park. Unfortunately, he was the first retirement, and his outing was a one-off.

Bending the rules a bit, the sight of Jim Clark in a Lotus that wasn't painted green might not have looked so jarring had he lived on:
Image

Here we have a young Carlos Sainz Sr. racing a type of car more closely associated with his son:
Image

Motorcycle-to-car racing converts are not a historically uncommon sight: Rossi, Lorenzo, Cecotto, Hailwood, Surtees, Behra, Varzi and, the greatest of them all, Nuvolari. But there are some who made the change that tend to be forgotten (often with good reason), like...

I'm sure I can think of more...

Sebastian Loeb in absolutely anything other than a Citroen World Rally Car is strange to me. Except perhaps an Extreme E machine?

Did two outings in the 2000 WRC in this car. 9th in Corsica was his best result.

"What is Deletraz doing?"

In this instance, Jean-Denis Deletraz was driving a 1st generation SEAT Toledo in the 1994 French Touring Car Championship.

I do not associate Sebastian Loeb with a Toyota Corolla because I associate him with the manufacturer which which he won his titles.

That's the whole point of this thread.

Pointing out instances of drivers competing in cars or series they are otherwise not usually associated with.

I often forget that Jacques Villeneuve had an F1 career beyond Willams and BAR. I never associate him with either Renault or Sauber, or even BMW Sauber.

Oh, that reminds me, Jarno Trulli had a FE team! And he drove for them! He had a single top 10 result, a 4th in the third round in Punta del Este. And his team tried to enter the second season but their drivetrain failed scrutineering so the team withdrew.

Trulli GP my beloved. I will never forget them.

Also more on FE stuff, Oliver Askew. Still reckon he had a shot at being someone in Indy.

I was coming here to say that there is now a "They Drove That Car" page on Reddit, but going by the photos and captions, I see that y'all are once again ahead of me.

Johnny Herbert's one-off for Ligier in 1994 always strikes me off. In a season with a heavy driver rotation both due to tragic and budgetary reasons, that always seemed very random.

Not so much they drove that car, but they OWN that car?

A Porsche 917k that was owned by Steve McQueen, raced some and was used in the filming of Le Mans came up for auction in Florida this past Saturday. It is currently owned by Jerry Seinfeld of all people. The bidding reached a staggering $25 million dollars, but the reserve was not met and the car did not sell.

Seinfeld is still on the hook for the 10% seller's commission, but he can certainly afford it.
