Hall of Shame revisited

Post by Captain Hammer »

So in the aftermath of last night's race, I started cruising the Hall of Shame on the main site, and I was wondering whether we might be able to re-issue some of the awards for 2010. For example:

VHS vs. Beta (or Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD for the younger ones): wing mirrors in the "outboard" position
You Lucky Bastard: Nico Hulkenberg, because Alonso's engine went on lap 55 of 56

Etc.

Well, given recent events, we could indeed update the awards.
The "You Lucky Bastard" award has to go to Piquet Jr. - at least Michael Andretti didn't have to crash on purpose.
I'd hold off on the "Hang up the Keys" for now - Rubens is struggling as much with the car as with the years (because, let's be honest, the FW32 is really just mid pack material, much as it pains me to say that). Schumacher is doing his best to win that award, but time will tell whether he can actually pick himself up a bit. Schumacher is probably ahead of Rubens in that regard, though.
As for the Punch and Judy, Alonso and Hamilton could be nominated, although it is somewhat complicated there - we know from subsequent interviews that Alonso was more frustrated with the Mclaren management then Hamilton (he was gracious enough to congratulate Hamilton in the Mclaren garage when he won the title). True, they're not exactly best mates, but they're not quite as bad as Prost and Senna, for example (they haven't actually taken each other off intentionally for a start).

How about Jean-Christophe Bouillon for You Lucky Bastard, he only scored 3 points, and the one at the 1995 Italian GP, he passed Papis on the last lap.

The only changes I would make to the Hall of Shame would be:
-Add Tiago Monteiro to the You Lucky Bastard.
-Add Hamilton and Alonso to the Punch and Judy.

I'd probably also add an award for ppl who got into F1 because of their family name and didn't succeed and then put drivers like Ralf Schumacher and Nelsinho Piquet there.

And "slightly differently mounted wing-mirrors" are really not that innovative as a fan-car or a six-wheeler. To be honest you've missed a trick, they should go in the "What Mirrors?" category :D

I really think Karthikeyan deserves the YLB more than Monteiro. Monteiro managed to take eighth at Spa in that sh*tbox Jordan. There was a little talent there...

That's exactly why he was 11th on the 2005 F1rejects driver rankings, despite being 27th in the 2006 F1Rejects rankings, behind Ide, YES IDE!

Also, I suggest that we should submit changes or even our own categories and see if they are good enough for the site.

Originally, they were supposed to have been removed for the Chinese GP; however, some of the teams (Red Bull and Ferrari in particular) complained about the fact that the changes were too abrupt for them to be able to make the changes, and have instead got the change moved back until the Spanish GP (since they can be integrated into the big upgrade packages that everybody traditionally brings at Barcelona).

That is actually quite a good point - there should be a category for those who follow in their parents footsteps (and it would have the advantage that we could update the YLB award and still find a place for Michael Andretti on the site). I'm not sure what it could be called, though - any suggestions?

There could also be a topic for the somewhat shady financiers who make their mark on the sport - Stefan could be in there, along with Qadbak (although the whole Walkinshaw saga is already on the website).

I already thought the awards :D :
Bronze medal-Michael Andretti>Poor, half-hearted efforts in a competitive car. Only his 3rd at Monza saves him of being higher.
Silver medal-Gary Brabham>OK, car's fault, but even so...
Gold medal-Nelson Piquet Jr.>Everybody knows why...
Close-but-no-cigar awards for: Markus Winkelhock, Kazuki Nakajima, Bruno Senna (for now, and I know that Ayrton was his uncle), David Brabham, Christian Fittipaldi.

Mark Webber for the "What Mirrors?" Award. He does get the red mist a little to often.

Hamilton/Alonso "Punch and Judy"

"Watch your Ear" Trulli and Sutil. Not too strong but then apart from Piquet/Salazar there isn't alot.

"Salt Lake Olympics" Super Aguri! Samantha King? did they even pay anything?

"VHS vs Beta" KERS! why hasn't anyone suggested that?

"You Lucky Bastard" Narain Karthekeyan. He escaped rejectdom along with Monteiro at the Farce Gp (US) and was no where near as fast or reliable as his team mate. Why people are nominating Tiago when Narain is around escapes me, perhaps they frogot him or can't spell his name (I'm not sure I can either)

Hang Up The Keys! -- Rubens Barrichello
VHS v. Beta -- Winglets, Wheel Farings

KERS isn't exactly killed off...
Samantha Kingz made all of SOOPA AGURI's shirts and apparel.

I think Kers deserves a mention for being allowed, found unuseful, banned for next season, Mclaren then demonstrates it's usefulness, people feel stupid for writing it off early, kers could be back. I think that saga should make the list.

As for the apparel, fair enough but i can't imagine it being the same monetary level as the Vodafones and the Santanders of the grid.

Looks like you've got one too many nominees for the YLB award there, surely?

But it is true that KERS is not ready to be added to the VHS v Betamax list yet - in fact, if the teams agree on it, it looks as if it will be making it's way back into the sport very soon. Nor has KERS been banned at any point - the regulations still allow it, and Williams had considered running their KERS system this year, before dropping it as part of ther re-entry into FOTA.
You could argue about the wheel covers too - strictly speaking, the FIA has not banned them (it was a FOTA initiative), and the design of the Ferrari wheels means that they effetively are still running wheel covers (by simply copying a trick Porsche has been doing at Le Mans for years - simply build the cover into the structure of the wheel itself).

Ralf's career ended badly, but he did have enough talent to take 6 race wins, I think he'd have gotten into F1 on merit even if Michael had gone down the sportscar route and most of F1 hadn't heard of him.

Double diffusers for VHS vs BETA?
Hamilton in China 2007 & Canada 2008 for severe brain fade?
Schumacher bros in Japan 2003 for Cain and Abel?
We'll have to wait for the end of the season, but I suspect 2010 could end up being a strong candidate for a place on the Annus Horriblus podium. Shame USF1 & Stefan Gp didn't make it, then it would have been even stronger.
