Amazing lap, isn't this something like only the 5th or 6th car to lap Nord in under 7 minutes?
Also, funny you mention rFactor, I happened to do a race around there a few weeks ago with the BMW Procar mod, with only auto-shifting and clutch on. Scary place, well worth the go though.

I used to race the 'Ring on F1 challenge 99-02 with a F1 Seven mod (basically has as realistic physics etc in the limits of the engine and the majority of the cars from 1970-1979).
Let me say this: The circuit is murder on a ground effect car. To this day I still haven't managed to get through a full lap without flipping the car on a kerb or ditch.

Its even worse without wings. On Grand Prix Legends, I never made intact past Kallenhard. Even then, I was just dawdling about along the middle of the road in second gear. I'm pretty sure I only completed a handful of laps, literally less than five, with bent suspensions with those old brittle 1967 cars.

I saw that pop up on the Top Gear website (as you'd expect). It is a pretty good time, but Ferrari have basically invented a category so they could claim that it has set a lap record.
After all, the car is not road legal, so it can't claim a production car record (the Gumpert Apollo claims that record, around the 20.6km version of the track, with a 7m11s time). Moreover, if you were to push the definition, and include the Radical, there is a version of that car which has done a 6m48s lap (and the Radical is technically road legal, although I wouldn't recommend it for commuting). Moreover, those cars set their times on the same tyres that they use on the street, whereas the 599XX uses specialised race tyres - that alone would probably shave a fair few seconds off the lap time.
Equally, you can't claim a record time if you called it a racing car either, because the old Group C cars were about 40 seconds a lap faster then the 599XX (see Bellof and his 6m12 record time). Nor is it actually that much faster then the ADAC 24h cars, which normally lap around the 7m mark for the highest performance cars (and during qualifying, they can dip below the 7m mark).
So, to get around that inconvenient problem, they have called it a "production derived prototype", which means that it doesn't have to be compared to any of the above cars.

Having watched that video, I still just can't get over the fact that F1 cars raced there merely 35 years ago. It seems to me almost like another world.

I've been considering starting up a multiplayer server and hosting games of modern day F1 cars racing on classic era circuits.
The full 10km Monza
The full Nurburgring
The Österreichring
Rouen Les-Essarts
Oscar Gálvez (with the loop around the lake)
Interlagos (old full 8km circuit)
Dijon
Zandvoort
etc...
There are so many amazing circuits out there that put the modern ones to shame for racing spectacle.

GPL Is notoriously difficult game anyway. Personally I can't keep the cars on the road in that game ANYWHERE

The freakest thing in the 'Ring on a Groundeffect car, on one of the small straights close to the beginning of the lap, there is a small hill the car goes over. It's a real booby trap that hill, because unless you lift on it (It being a straight, its very counter-intuitive), your car tries to emulate the 1999 Mercedes CLK-GTR of Le Mans. THAT is scary.

That would be Flugplatz, which is German for airfield.
(It is named that because there is a small airfield next to the track there, and the fact that your car takes off like a paperplane is purely coincidental.)

Someone else in possibly a less well built car than the Ferrari would have crashed and the track'd have been pulled.
Or they'd have seen sense anyway without a crash. I'd imagine it was a topic of discussion anyway before Lauda's crash.

You've hit the nail on the head there, I feel (and there are some who believe that Lauda's crash was down to a suspension failure, not necessarily driver error).
There had been talk of a driver's strike before Lauda's crash over safety concerns, and during the 1976 race, Lauda was not the only driver to crash heavily (Peterson also crashed, but was relatively unharmed). Considering how fast the cars were only a few year later, thanks to ground effects, and the fact that there is basically no run off area, somebody would probably have had a very serious crash which would have lead to the circuit being pulled, or the drivers would have eventually refused to drive there. The switch of F1 cars to turbo engines would have only made the problem worse.
After all, one of the problems for Lauda was the fact that the medical crews could not get to him quickly after the car went up in flames - compare the spacing of stewarding and medical posts at a modern track, and with the Nordschliefe, and you see the problem.

Tbh, circuits like the nordschleife is the type of tracks that F1 miss atm.

To be honest, if any rich oil state wants to join F1, they should have to build the Nordschleife in all its glory, but about two lanes wider and with no trees in the middle so the marshals can get to accidents quickly.

Or recreate the WHOLE Monza circuit... INCLUDING the whole Oval

Not to mention it would make the Indianapolis-track look epically lame. An Oval combined to a GREAT Outfield (Not exactly infield in monza)...

Only the 14 miles of the Nordschleife? Nah, build a slightly wider version of the 37 miles of the Manx TT!!! The speeds over the mountain section would be hugely epic...

I would send them there, the cars are so much safer now. How many laps are there in a full distance race at the Nordschleife?
I like the way Snrub thinks!
Re: [Non-reject related] New lap record set on the Nurburgring
13 or 14. if they are racing the 24.7km * 10laps = 247km, 13/14 I guess.

I can't even complete a novice race at Monza with a proper force-feedback steering wheel, and Monza's one of those tracks that I know well. The problem seems to be more trying to get the proper balance of braking, because I'm used to racing simulators with far more modern cars which have far better stopping potential. I'm going to try to improve my skills soon - I think a lot of my trouble is that I'm going at it too aggressively for my skill level.

That's what I had trouble with at first, the brakes are shockingly bad, and any kind of steering adjustment when under heavy braking will just send the car off the track! It is masterable but takes so long, I think I'm going to leave the Nuburgring till last while I'm still learning all the tracks!

I think one of my problems was trying to use the fast but twitchy Lotus. I did try using the more reliable Repco-Brabham for a while, but to little avail. I think I just need more practice.
