Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Hungary
Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Hungary
As the Hungaroring looks a bit Keystone Cops courtesy of the SC & Carlos suns himself somewhere without internet, it again falls to me to set this thread off today:-
"Based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Nico Rosberg's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".
Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6

13 laps left, but:
1. Petrov
2. Hulkenberg
With de la Rosa not far behind.

1. Kobayashi - Last row of the grid? C'mon, do something that might make it hard for me to score points.
2. Petrov - A solid 5th is imminent.

1) Petrov, fast all weekend and kept it on the island for once.
2) Hulkenburg, a top drive to finish 6th in a donkey of a car and to demolish his teammate. Quite a few contenders for this award, a tough choice for once.

02. Vitaly Petrov - For beating Kubica in the qualifying and then keeping his head calm and taking a fifth position! Well deserved! Congratulations.
03. Nico Hülkenberg - For keeping himself calm, not making mistakes and driving in sight of Petrov! Sixth place, eight points! Nice work.
BUT...
KAMUI KOBAYASHI. A burn from the stern. Amazing result! Starting from the 23rd position, then rushing up to the 9th? Of course, this needed a Hamilton, Kubica, Rosberg retirement, but still, well deserved.

1: Kobayashi. Another brilliant drive from Kamui-san. if/when he gets a proper car under him, we're looking for the first ever Japanese gp-winner.
2: Petrov: My god, unlike piquet last year, he actually took heed when told its "Tulos tai ulos" i.e "Result or out". 5th is very epic.

Kobayashi - brilliant first lap, good pace throughout, just an all round excellent race
The New Teams - All the cars to the finish, none of the them blocked or did anything stupid, and even Yamamoto wasn't too shabby on the pace. Showing promise.

Re: Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Hungary
Loads of candidates this time, but I will say:
1. Rubens Barrichello - for 10th place, I would have back off if Schumi shoved me up against the wall. Keeping his foot in it was very impressive.
2. Kamui Kobayashi - I think I'd be right in saying he is the only driver this season to have got points despite starting on the back row of the grid.
For the record, I'd say 3rd = Petrov, 4th = Hulkenberg, 5th = De La Rosa, 6th = New teams for all finishing

Hulkenberg. Though for his most impressive drive he was almost invisible. Heidfeldian-type abilities to sneak under the radar.
Runner-up goes to Petrov. He converted that pace into a mature drive. We'll make an F1 driver out of him yet!
Sauber deserve a mention, but they don't quite outshine good days for the young number 2 drivers who if it wasn't for the amount of dangerous incidents, we would all be discussing.

Mark Webber - after he did not pit under safety car, I thought his race was effectively over
Vitaly Petrov - easily the race of his life; a deserved result and a good reward for the misfortunes of the first half of the season

According to the BBC Lucas Di Grassi managed the fastest lap in 27 seconds, which must be worth acknowledging!

Sauber, good effort by both drivers.
New teams.
Like to mention Rubens for being able to laugh about Michael. I suppose he's used to it by now.....

1. Petrov - Absolutely stunning drive, he managed to keep Kubica honest all throughout the weekend, and only made one mistake as far as I could tell. If he keeps this up, his seat should be very safe.
2. Kobayashi - Another banzai drive from Cowboyashi. 23rd to 9th on a track notoriously difficult to pass on is a superb effort, and more than makes up for his post-qualifying antics.

1) Rookie drivers; Hulkenberg, Kobayashi, and Petrov had excellent drives. Even Di Grassi and Senna didn't have bad drives, and their cars are worse than lackluster. Good job.
2) De La Rosa; the guy still has it, and the car obviously favors the European tracks.

Re: Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Hungary
My choices:
-Vitaly Petrov: by far the Russian's best outing so far. He constantly had the measure of Kubica and saved Renault's honor with a solid drive to 5th place.
-Both Sauber drivers, but especially Pedro de la Rosa: his qualifying was stunning, being 9th on the grid, and then he got a 7th place, which, considering how unlucky the guy has constantly been over the season, was unexpected. And Kobayashi did a phenomenal start from 23rd on the grid and brought Sauber 2 points for his 9th place. Who would have thought that some races ago?
-Nico Hülkenberg: trashed Barrichello and finished 6th, which is a good and solid effort, really.

Rubens, for keeping his foot in when Michael was being idiotic and then laughing it all off at the end rather than going off on one. 'Let the viewers decide' indeed!
Sauber, for coming such a long way since the start of the season and beating a McLaren on pace.
Petrov just misses out for that pathetic non-attempt to keep Lewis behind I'm afraid.

Re: Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Hungary
For my 2 cents, for what it is worth:
1) Petrov - although he had improved in Hockenheim, he was on excellent form all weekend, as he was consistently quicker then Kubica. He put in a decent qualifying lap, considering that he had to use a used set of tyres, made a strong start and drove a sensible race to a solid, and thoroughtly deserved 5th place. OK, the only let down was the fact that he made a mistake in trying to get on the power too early in Turn 1 and let Hamilton through into Turn 2 as a result, but he withstood the pressure from Rosberg, and was pulling away from him gradually before the stops.
Considering that only a few races ago, the Renault management were starting to get a little frustrated with Petrov, he seems to have coped well with the pressure recently, and stepped up a gear. I only hope that he manages to keep this run of form up for the rest of the season.
2) All three new teams - for all three teams to make it to the end of the race with both cars still running was a major achievement for all of them, given the problems they have faced. OK, they were still the thick end of 2s a lap off Liuzzi in 13th place, but even so, it seems that they have all, hopefully, got reliable enough cars to at least finish the races, even if they are still some way off the rest of the field.
Honourable mentions for Kobayashi (he made a brilliant start - he promised Legard that he would be in 12th by the end of the 2nd lap, and certainly went about the right way to do that), De La Rosa (who also had quite good pace this weekend, and got into the top 10 on merit), along with Hulkenberg (for managing to quietly work his was into 6th place) and Rubens (for the sheer bravado when stuffing his car down the inside of a very aggressive Schumacher).

Overall there were some pretty good drives out there though. Mario's pointed out how all 3 new teams got both cars to the finish, and also Hulkenberg had a very solid race. At this rate, Williams will overhaul The Force for 6th in the WCC!

This time, I must go for the popular vote of
1) Vitaly Petrov
2) Kamui Kobayashi (he's just in 2nd because it's a first for Petrov and an important contribution to the unrejectification - otherwise, going from P23 to P9 is flawless - especially with a car that is not of the top league and on a track that is known as not being one of the team's favourites.)

1) Vitaly Petrov: After a rather lacklustre season start, he finally proves his potential with a strong drive in both qualifying and the race.
2) Nico Hulkenberg: Sixth place wasn't exactly what I was expecting here. Another rookie driver with a result that brings him further away from rejectdom.
Honourable mentions go to the Sauber drivers - de la Rosa for managing to make Q3 and scoring points for the first time this season, Kobayashi for making up fourteen places on the Hungaroring of all circuits - and the new teams for reliability.

Next position - Barrichello for that move on Schumi.
Also a special mention for a non-driver - Nigel Hope of the Williams pit crew for unintentionally bringing Rosberg's errant wheel to a halt, being unconscious for several seconds then later being involved with Barrichello's pit stop. Have to be made of stern stuff at Williams!
