Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Belgium

As the boys change into something dry and have a warm tea, you are once more asked to vote for the Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race, a democratically-decided award

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Nico Rosberg's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.

Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

1st (10 points): Mercedes, for having two points-finishers after a shocking qualy + penalties
2nd (6 points): Kobayashi, for scoring eighth after a shicking qualy.

1st - Mercedes, but particularly Rosberg, as he made fantastic use of the restart to make up 2 places
2nd - Petrov, 23rd to 9th, a mature drive with an excellent passing manuever in there for good measure.

I'd like to give 2nd to Kobayashi, but I can't, as he his excellent pace seemed to evaporate as soon as he got tucked up behind the Mercedes

1) Petrov: Best drive I've seen from him, easily. The pass on Rosberg was awesome to watch.
2) Schumacher: 21st to, what, 7th, and didn't drive like a toolbag. He needs to do this more often.

My number 1. nomination goes to Michael Schumacher. He drove a terrific race, did nothing wrong, had an awesome start and made up so many places!
For nomination 2., I was actually considering Michael's teammate, Nico Rosberg, who also made up quite a few places and finished in front of Schumacher, despite being overtaken by him, but I'm going to go ahead and give it once again to Kamui Kobayashi, who also came out of nowhere and had a few enjoyable battles, among others with Alonso. Also, honorable mention to Petrov, for also doing quite well.

I've got a problem with this award. Does it focus on the full weekend or just in the race? Because Kobayashi finishing 7th wasn't completely unexpected before the weekend, as Sauber have been in good form lately. On the other hand, Kubica in 3rd was unexpected. But after qualifying it was the other way around...

I moved it to the end of the weekend because I'd like it to focus on the race. But you're right, the impact of qualy is there as well.

Just follow your gut feeling. Anything/anyone surprised you on the good side?

1. Schumacher - can't stand him but did gain a ton(ne) of places in the race, one of the best races of the year for him and I am desparate for the points in the Predictament Predictions...

2. Sutil - would have nominated him first for being ahead of both works Mercs but see italics above.

I have to agree with this for exactly the same reasons - Ross Brawn called the strategy right, and, more importantly, both of his drivers were able to put in the lap times to make the strategy work. He has taken some flack recently, but Schumacher showed that there might still be a bit of the old magic left, and Rosberg also put in a very respectable performance.

As for Petrov, he did well to make it up the grid, when he could have so easily thrown it off the road in the changeable conditions (especially after yesterday, which would probably have dented his confidence). And he had plenty of confidence when he went past Rosberg - he was determined to make it stick, and he did that with the knowledge that Schumacher was pressing him all the time in case he made a mistake. He withstood the pressure from behind well, and managed to make his passes stick when he pushed on.

So, to summarise, No. 1 is Mercedes, and No. 2 is Petrov (and well done to both of them).

Two nominees:
Schumacher - from 21st to 7th
Petrov - from 23rd to 9th
All of them arose the same amount of racers on the grid! WOW! But the Mercedes is the least consistent, so I give the nominee to Schumacher.

1) Petrov- My favourite driver of this season really showed his stuff! And in all honesty, I didn't think he could do it, but he did! I think he really should have been in Q3, and if that had happened, he might have been able to sneak into 4th, just like I predicted.

2) M. Schumacher- Not that there isn't a R. Schumacher, but anyway.. The old man actually showed us some of his best skills since 06! Gaining the same number of places as Petrov, he's only second because he couldn't stand the pressure from Rosberg (dropping MSC from 5th to 6th)

But special mentions to Sutil, for giving Indian Force some much needed confidence.

1st Schumacher. Normally I wouldn't consider the improbability of Schumacher making up 14 places from his grid position to be of infinite proporitions, but given the season he's having and the dog's dinner of a car he's driving, I think it qualifies.

2nd Petrov

Honourable mention - Alonso's Ferrari F10 for surviving the punt it got from Rubens undamaged.

1. Michael Schumacher - Having bashed him most of the season (I think i've nominated him for ROTR more often than not) its nice to nominate him for a positive accolade.
2. Vitaly Petrov - An excellent recovery drive, Vitaly has now held position from a good qualifying and stormed through from a bad one in consecutive races, I hope his seat is now secure.
