Drivers who have raced against a father and son
Drivers who have raced against a father and son
I was trying to work out if there have been any drivers who have competed in the same races as two generations of driver?
I can think of some veterans in the 1993 season (such as Prost and Patrese) racing against both Mario and Michael Andretti, and that's about it.
Michael Schumacher misses out on racing against both the Piquets and both the Nakajimas through not competing in 2007 - 2009, and Barrichello just missed Nelson Sr and Satoru by a year. Both those two have raced against an uncle and nephew though (the Sennas)!

Nigel Mansell raced Gilles Villeneuve in the early 80s in F1 and Jacques Villeneuve in 1993/4 in Indycar....
also in 1994 he raced both Emmerson(Indycar) and Christian Fittipaldi(F1)

Someone yesterday I believe mentioned on here how Patrese just missed out on racing against Graham Hill in the mid 70s and so would have bridged the gap between him and son Damon. Can't remember who posted it though for the life of me! Apologies in advance to the person who did! ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Coming to the Fittipaldis, Patrese raced against both in F1.

AFAIK, noone drove both in 1989 and in 2007, so it wouldn't matter anyway.

And so I imagine nobody has raced against both Kinky and Nico Rosberg.

Anyone in NASCAR in 2000, because you had Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the field. Ditto for the Jim/Steve Richards combo.

I don't know much about NASCAR, but surely someone raced against at least 2 of the 4 Pettys...

Bobby and Davey Allison, for sure.
And Richard and Kyle had overlap. And Adam and Kyle had overlap too, a bit.
Re: Drivers who have raced against a father and son
Giancarlo Fisichella actually raced against Keke Rosberg in DTM back in 1995, and raced against Nico for four years in F1.
Talking about American scene, Michael and Marco Andretti raced together in one Indy 500, and there wasn't too much between Bobby Rahal's last and Graham's first race. Dario Franchitti fits that at least.

Correct me if I'm wrong but would Helio Castroneves fit into that gap too?

I was referring to Manfred Winkelhock, who raced between 1980 and 1985. I know Joachim and Manfred are brothers, but for the sake of making this thread more interesting I'm taking the license of expanding this into siblings as well (hello, Schumachers!)

Well according to Murray Walker, Ralf was actually Michael's son on one occasion. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Nigel, Leo and Greg Mansell were all entered into the same car at Le Mans this year (but Nigel wrote the car off on lap 4 or so of the race...), and the two sons competed at the recent Silverstone 1000 km race...

If I'm not mistaken Jonathan Palmer took part in a Formula Audi Palmer race in Spa a few years ago, thereby racing against his son Jolyon.

Has Martin Brundle raced against his son Alex yet?

In UK short track stock car racing I have seen two occasions where three generations of the same family have raced against each other.

He has, once, in 2008.
Martin was invited, and accepted, an opportunity to race in the Formula Palmer Audi series at Spa-Francorchamps, at the same time that his son was competing in the series. He did relatively well for somebody who had not driven for years, and hadn't had a chance to test drive the cars before the event (three top 8 finishes, and I believe one top 6 finish - not bad when most of the field probably weren't born when he was racing). Unfortunately, I cannot remember whether he did beat his son or not.
Martin Brundle, on watching a replay of Grosjean spinning:
"The problem with Grosjean is that he want to take a look back at the corner he's just exited"

He beat him! http://www.crash.net/f1/news/62195/1/br ... t_spa.html
By the way, I have to apologize: This is the race I was talking about before. I somehow must have mixed up Brunde and Palmer because both their sons were racing in Formula Palmer Audi that year. Jonathan Palmer did not compete in that race. Sorry!

if i'm not wrong, father and daughter ickx competed against each other in the dakar rally - of all places
an original one was rally driver marc duez competing against his own wife in some belcar and procar races in the nineties, guess not many drivers have done that!
his wife turned out to be unsuccesfull and probably returned where she belonged, the kitchen
(did i said that out loud?

Yep. Lee and Richard Petty, and then Richard and Kyle, and then for a few races, Kyle and the late Adam Petty.
A more interesting one is that for awhile in the NASCAR Busch series, there was a husband and wife combo in the field with Elton Sawyer and the unfairly-low-regarded Patty Moise.

You're correct, although similarly, I can't remember what Alistair was driving, although he was in a Mitsubishi at somepoint, I seem to recall.
Re: Drivers who have raced against a father and son
In a similar vein, in CART, from 1995 to 1996, everyone competed against the uncle-nephew pairing of Emerson and Christian Fittipaldi. ... and I'm not sure if Mario and Michael Andretti have been listed... and in 1991, Mario, Michael, and the Moving Chicane Jeff Andretti all raced together!
Totally unrelated to this topic, twin sisters will race in the NASCAR Camping World Truck race on Saturday. Angela and Amber Cope (who I affectionately call the Barbie Doll twins... seriously, Google them and just look at how much makeup...) will both be driving for Rick Ware at Martinsville. I've only seen them race once before (ARCA race at Iowa last year I think), and Angela was significantly faster than Amber, but they were still in the lower half of the field after running a VERY anonymous race.

AFAIK Alistairs first chance in a WRC team was in Subaru together with Colin in 98, and then he got a contract with Hyundai, before going to Mitsubishi (when they changed they highly sucssesful Gr.A Lancer to the,- never to be sucssesful Lancer WRC). He also drove well in PWRC some years, and have had some outings in a Proton this year and last year if I remember right.

A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti did in the Indianapolis 500. Competed against Jack Brabham, and then many years later raced against Geoff Brabham. In the same event no less!
