Schumi out / Corpse of Badoer's f1 career twitches!
This just in: according to italian media, Schumacher informed Montezemolo that his neck hurts too much, therefore he won't be racing in Valencia.

Schumacher backs out
Apparently Schumi's neck injury is took bad for him to contemplate coming back into F1 so he's had to drop out. Does the door open again for Luca Badoer?

Ferrari: Hi Luca, how’s it going?
Luca: Yeah, good thanks. Terrible news about Felipe.
Ferrari: Oh yeah, terrible. He’s doing better, but can’t see him racing for a while.
Luca: Look, don’t like to celebrate misfortune or anything, but think that leaves a space in the car free…
Ferrari: Yep, that’s very true.
Luca: And I’ve paid my dues, haven’t I? Been driving for Ferrari as a test driver since 1997.
Ferrari: You have.
Luca: And you kind of owe me for overlooking me in 1999 when Michael Schumacher broke his leg and you gave his seat to Mika Salo, don’t you?
Ferrari: Well…
Luca: What do you mean - you definitely owe me!
Ferrari: It’s just that we didn’t back you then because you’re the guy who’s competed in the most F1 races without scoring a single point.
Luca: Yeah, that’s technically true, but what about when I was running 4th in a Minardi and the gearbox failed with 13 (unlucky for me) laps to go?
Ferrari: Gutting. Definitely. But I think we made a conscious decision that day when we saw you crying afterwards that you probably weren’t Ferrari race driver material. You’re more of a tester.
Luca: Oh man, so that’s why you got Gene in? He’s going to get this opportunity before me?
Ferrari: Well, not exactly.
Luca: Why not?
Ferrari: We’re going to get Michael Schumacher to do it.
Luca: Michael Schumacher?
Ferrari: Exactly.
Luca: So even if Kimi and Felipe were unable to drive the racecars, you wouldn’t pick me to drive it?
Ferrari: Hmmm. Hadn’t really thought about it. But evidently, no, no we wouldn’t.
Luca: You’d prefer the guy who hasn’t raced a car for 3 years?
Ferrari: Be fair - you’ve not raced for 10.

Re: Corpse of Badoer's f1 career twitches
Thank god Ferrarisaw sense in the end, but I can't help thinking that this is a delayed reaction to not being allowed to test: Instead of getting a seven-time champion, get a driver who hasn't yet scoered a point to tug at team-owners emotions and allow them to test.
But the big question is, will Luca do it? Will he score a point in his first race back? and more importantly, will he become the first driver (that I know of) to have their profile taken down retrospectively?

Heh, Ferrari's reluctance is palpable, but Badoer must be doing cartwheels around his house right now. Good on the guy. I hope he wins (heh).

Yes, Autosport says so:

Well, that'll stop the speculation once and for all. The world has re-started running its course. And there's more than a bit of poetic justice there.

Re: Corpse of Badoer's f1 career twitches
I'm very glad for Badoer. He has the duty of at least scoring. And this is a huge comeback, equal to Jan Lammers, who left F1 in 1982 and came back in 1992.
Although my heart is glad for Badoer, my brain tells me that Gené would have been a better choice. He won Le Mans this year, so he has a recent racing experience.

Badoer managed a top ten in close to a quarter of his F1 career in 4 different but equally backmarker cars.
Surely his time has come!

God has well and truely arrived in Formula 1.
First the reinstation of Montreal next year and now this.
I feel bad for Schumi though... It would have made the rest of the season of the most exciting since 03. (07 was up there until spy-gate reared it's ugly head)

It's very disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing how he would do. Bloody motorbikes!
I suppose you have to give credit to James Allen, who throughout this whole affair has been saying on his blog "Look, his neck's not up to it, it's probably not going to happen."

Re: Corpse of Badoer's f1 career twitches
Great news, justice is served!
Ferrari could have been a bit nicer to Badoer though - the public statement gives the impression that he's just some guy who's been hanging around the factory for years and they've felt sorry for him. I know full well that testing and racing are very different things, but Badoer is the registered reserve driver after all. Unless I'm wrong that means he gets to go to all the driver briefings (such as Coulthard did earlier on in the year) so he can step in at the last minute yet still be up to date with the latest regulations.
I know who I'll be supporting in Valencia...

After ten years of not driving for Ferrari in F1, you think he still went to those briefings?

More like a substitute goalkeeper. Nobody expects to see him play, but he has to go to the games and be ready on the bench.

Re: Schumi - the big tease
He's lucked in, in a number of ways.
1.Massa being unable to drive to start with, though obviously he'd rather have come in under happier circumstances.
2.Natural replacement Schumacher having this neck injury.
3.Ferrari not being in the title race for once, meaning his inclusion now has a just about acceptable level of risk attached to it.
That's an extremely rare set of circumstances right there.

Re: Schumi - the big tease
Well, it's certainly annoying - what interest is there in Valencia now? We'll just have Badoer a fair few tenths behind Raikkonen, and people will wistfully talk about what would have happened 'if Schumi were here...'.
Better than 'Tour in a suit case' Takagi.

We are stunned. But overall excited and thrilled for Luca. This is one of the greatest days ever in F1 Rejects' history!
He comes close to Jan Lammers' record of 10 yrs 3 month between Grands Prix.

Badoer's a legend in the world of F1Rejects among Nissanymania, HWNSNBM, Lavaggi and Deletraz. Good to see him back, hopefully he can escape reject status or at least score a point. If i'm not mistaken, American driver Brett Lunger will inherit Badoer's record if he claims a point.
I like the way Snrub thinks!

I'm probably about as excited as you are. I'm just annoyed I have to wait a week and a half for qualifying!
Not only is this an official, listed F1 Reject suddenly getting a top drive - in a Ferrari no less - but a Reject from the golden era of Rejectdom - the 1990s! He's not even a Pedro Diniz, who squeaked into the 2000 season, this is a bona fide '90s Reject. In F1 terms, he's practically a museum piece. This is like Tuero or Katyama or Lamy getting a drive and becoming an active F1 driver in a top team.
It's like... it's like Norman Greenbaum suddenly getting a brand new number 1 hit single, 40 years after his last, and finally losing his one hit wonder status. Only more exciting.
Re: Schumacher NOT to replace Massa
I smell a conspiracy...(and yes, I'm standing up)
Michael had nothing to gain by stepping into Massa's car. Michael has proved himself time and again and a few more wins, even if it is over Kimi, would mean little. It's not as if he needed the money, he's alreay a 'squintillionaire so the added loot wouldn't have amounted to more than pocket change. As for his bike racing crash injuries, the word on the street may have been "Michael was banged up a bit" but Michael would have known he had breaks and was in no shape to hop into a F1 car. He would have known there would be no way he could take the punishment. Not with fractures in his neck. Any doctor could have told him that right up front. So, he would have known racing was a non-starter.
Who would have something to gain? Who else but that megalomaniac Bernie! Valencia hasn't been the spectator draw the organizers had hoped and with Renault potentially banned from the race, (dropping out Alonso), even fewer people would be tempted to show. But raise the hopes that Michael might show and ticket sales jump. Ultimately, Bernie profits big-time. No wonder when Michael made his announcement he was going to drive Bernie was one of the first to jump on the bandwagon and praise him...
...I should have smelled something right up front but instead I was suckered in just like everyone else....
