It seems that a little piece of the suspension broke, which ultimately blew the tyre out. Reminds me of a Red Bull accident exactly in Sepang at 2008... or a Toro Rosso last year?

Meanwhile the engine simply gave up even before leaving pitlane.

P2 107% time: 1.43.657

P2 Karthikeyan time: 1.43.167 :D :D :D

Liuzzi, Kovalainen, and the absent D'Ambrosio miss the cut.

Looks as if the wheels came off a few team's efforts in practice today! Ahem...

McLaren must be pretty happy to have consolidated their second position behind the Red Bulls, but as always practice can be deceiving. Nice to see Webber ahead of Vettel, though.

Maybe, although, as you say, the practise times can be deceptive, since there is always the issue of fuel loads. It's good to see that Webber is back on form here, since his lack of pace in Australia seemed to be a bit peculiar (Horner did reveal that Webber had a problem with the rear heave spring which might have cost Webber some time, but it seems that poor set up work resulting from that problem was to blame for his bad tyre wear and lack of pace).
Still, we could see another Red Bull cakewalk if Hamilton's prediction that Red Bull have the best part of half a second in their pocket is true...

On another note, whilst Pirelli have brought additional tyres for this race as part of an ongoing testing program, Paul Hembrey has said that he thinks that the tyres might still be too durable, judging by Perez's performance in Australia. He does suggest that part of Perez's performance could be explained by driving style, and partially because Perez was able to use a fresh set of tyres and did not drive very aggressively in the opening laps. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90505
The thing is, it seems a bit early to say that the tyres are too durable - we saw how, for example, Ferrari seemed to be really struggling with their tyres (especially Massa), so Perez's performance for now looks more like a one off than the norm.

"Then, before we know it, we are suddenly back to a one-stop in F1. F1 people are so good at making developments and understanding how to maximise the performance - so we do need to watch that, otherwise we will be back to square one."

This.

Brakes always are an issue in Montreal, and last year with the big fuel loads at the beginning of the race it was to be expected to see a lot of brake failures there, but it didn't happen. I've been saying during pre-season that they would learn how to use the tyres and we would have 2 pitstops at most races. What happens is that there's one thing F1 people do even better: whining! And so they were complaining about high tyre degradation, 4-5 stop races and so on.

I don't want to see pitstops contests and the Melbourne balance looked about right. It doesn't bother me if there are three or four races during the season on which most people stop just once, as long as they have to pit twice or thrice in the other fifteen. And someone doing a Pérez from time to time it's not bad.
Go home, Bernie Ecclestone!

Karthikeyan's engine troubles were more likely down to an oil leak or something similar. Certainly not an engine failure as he made it round more than a third of the track before pulling off, and was out again in FP2 though it seemed the problem hadn't quite gone away.

Happy with the performance from Virgin though, despite D'Ambrosio's lack of running in the second session after his off, but nonetheless Glock is well inside the 107%, about 3 seconds I believe, which is also around the same gap back to the HRTs. :)

More rejectful than Chandhok's accident in Melbourne.
So far, Maldonado is the reject candidate for me because of this.

Bit harsh - they are almost certainly using the same weather prediction service as the teams, race control and the stewards are using, which is Meteo France. If you really want to blame somebody for misleading forecasts, surely it'd be Meteo France, as providers of the weather forecast data - and I'd hardly think that there'd be many outside of France who would object to the principal of heckling the French...

What if Vettel is so fast that the entire rest of the field doesn't make the 107% rule? I bet Bernie never thought of that... (not that he would need to because that is entirely impossible and I'm a complete moron for even suggesting it) (but it still might happen...)

Oh dear for HRT, still, it is unlikely there'll be a soft tyre run from the front teams and that could increase 107% by one second which may be the difference maker

From what I've seen in practice the front runners may not have a say in the matter. Alguersuari was only half a second slower on the softs than Vettel was on the hards so the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes may be forced to run softs in Q1 just to make it.

@ wizzie: - Yeah I was just seeing on BBC that Lotus think they may get into Q2 so it could be a very mixed event and really leave the teams right at the back on the ragged edge

surprised that none of the front runners are out setting a banker lap, we saw last year what a failure that could be
