Fishmouth or lowered nosecones?

Post by lostpin »

I was thinking recently about the aesthetics of thesedays modern nosecones. I think this was the year when I definetly ran out of sympathy for the high fishmouth nosecone design (I mean, just look at Renault and BMW, just look at them!). Apart from the aerodynamic advantages, I would like to see the cars running with low nosecones again, something like in the late 80's. Really, when someone thinks of an quintessential F1 car, I think that this is the thing that really comes to mind :). State your opinion please.

Best front wing ever - '95 Minardi. Not sure what type it would be though.

Lowered nosecones all the way. That FW-14 you posted up there is one of the most beautiful cars ever, in my opinion. I t epitomised F1: sleek, avant-garde, fabulous - even managed to make Mansell a WDC...

I agree with Carlos about that car. A work of art.

They've had their day though. Red Bull seem to have played with the noses more than most, changing from normal, to bendy, to a ridged bridge, to the duck-bill to the duck-bill with bridge.

That Williams 2003(?) tapered-style nose is the most unusual I can remember in recent memory, and that didn't last the season, did it?

I believe he meant "sharknose":

About Red Bull messing around with the nosecones: Adrian Newey was the father of that beautiful FW-14 as well...

Newey also invented the raised nosecones btw

BTW, thats Räikkönen with two K's and two N's. Not Raikonnen (Raikkonen is fine if you have no umlauts though)

Didn't Harvey Posthlewaithe (think that's how it's spelt) with the 1990 Tyrrell? Or was the 'anhedral' whatever the funk that means.

nope, it was Newey.
I give to you, Newey-designed March 881:

Postlewaithe did invent the "anthedral" or whatever the "frontwing attached to the nose via Struts" type of wings

Really? I was really young when I started seeing F1 (around 9 or 10, in 1991), so I can't remember it well. I have seen the anhedral-wing Tyrrel in pictures, but the first that caught my eye was the 1991 Benetton:

I remember seeing that and trying to explain my father, who could care less about motorsport, that it looked like a shark! He actually sat with me to see the next race. :D

It depends on the design. The current Renault and BMWs are just dreadful but not all raised noses were bad. The Forti FG03 was a fantastic design which sadly was underfunded and didn't have a chance. Not all lowered noses are fine either. The Williams FW14 was a masterpiece, but remember the tea-tray on the Pacific PR02? What on earth were they thinking?

To me, the car that first comes to mind, whenever somebody says 'raised nosecone' is the 1992 Benetton.Image

I really do not have a preference on the type of the nosecone, I just wish that the car designs would be more individual.

That dodo nose cone might have worked for the past season, but it's a reject for this one.

It depends on the type of car. EG Red Bull nosecone is very long but the rear wing isnt that wide. The brawn has a small nosecone but a widest rear wing the regs can.
