Liuzzi crashed in P3 and they couldn't fix it, and Karthikeyan had a suspension problem I believe.

I'm suspicious; I figure they thought they had a better chance of being allowed to race if they didn't send him out to prove how slow they were.

Yep.

Only just though - the cut off time was a 1m20.4s lap (according to Brundle during the coverage of Q1); Liuzzi set a 1m20.1 and Karthikeyan a 1m20.2 in FP3, so they made it in by just two tenths of a second.

It's a big risk though - they only narrowly made it in because their FP3 times were just within 107%. Personally, I'm more inclined to believe that it was a suspension problem - they've had a few mechanical problems this weekend - but Virgin Racing and Team Lotus might be a little annoyed that they've put in the effort to qualify, but HRT, having not turned a lap in qualifying, will have lots of nice fresh tyres for the race.
Then again, HRT have been a long way off even Virgin Racing - the replays of the F111 make it look like a somewhat tricky car to drive. Yes, the cars are pretty stiffly sprung, and Monaco is unusually bumpy by F1 standards, but even the stiffest front runner, McLaren, have reasonably good compliance compared to the F111 - the F111 was lurching and bucking around from bump to bump. Half the time, it looked like they'd forgotten to put the dampers in - it just didn't seem to smooth out the bumps compared to, say, even the T127 - and it must be costing them lot of time.

That, or the dampers are STILL being held by Spanish authorities.

Eddie Jordan said on BBC they should not allow to race. I have to agree, these last few races they have been on the pace, but thats in the past. Its a risk and if they ruin one of the leaders race due to holding them up then the FIA will have alot to explain to why letting them race.

But, everyone wants to see Vettel beaten, and the HRTs can possibly be the key to that!

Hasn't worked out like that, though, has it? It was the midfield that stopped Button from winning and thus beating Vettel.

HRT did well to stay out the way...

I'm probably a terrible person for not knowing this, but where did Grosjean get his name spelt as Rrrrrrmmmnnn Grrrrrjjjjjnnnn and why?

...you try saying (or should that be muttering) "Romain Grosjean" the way a stereotypical Frenchman from the deep countryside would. You know, the one with onions round his neck and a throat full of gravel, who is trying to get the gravel out of his throat over the sound of a badly tuned 2CV, and has drunk a bit too much of le vin rustique in his time. In fact, if I could ever find the episode of Deals On Wheels where Richard Sutton bought a Citroën H-Van from one of these stereotypical Frenchmen, I could show you exactly what I mean.

EDIT: HWNSNBM has looked on this post and smiled on it. Series 4 of Deals On Wheels is the one showing on 4OD, and this episode is in it!

According to Jamie & Enoch on the podcast it's more like "Råååååååååååmååååååååååååån Grååååååååååååååjååååååååååååååååån", to use a certain letter borrowed from Scandinavia that fits their pronunciation perfectly. What I don't know is which podcast said pronunciation first appeared in - but I'll assume it was the first one made after he first raced in mid-2009, unless he was mentioned before that as a test driver.

I think the spelling stuck as a mixture of Jamie & Enoch's Frenchman impression, and that fact that pronouncing "Rrrrrmmmnn Grrrrjjjjnnn" with absolutely no vowels (and varying amounts of other letters, but this is how I've kept it for the Microprose Grand Prix thread on the Perry forum) genuinely does sound like a stereotypical gravel-and-phlegm-throated Frenchman.

And they've looked quite competitve with the Virgins in testing. Could this be the weekend where they finally beat someone? Well, no, probably not, but it would be nice if they did.

And thanks to F1Technical, here is a shot of the new exhaust system on the F111, which seems to be based heavily on the system Mercedes are using (blowing across the top surface of the floor from around the sidepod area).

This actually feels like a slightly strange experience, to be talking about HRT actually bringing noticeable performance upgrades (both on the car and the timesheets). However, Geoff Willis did point out that there is no guarantee that the new exhaust system and floor will remain on the car for the race - they'll only use it if they are sure it will last the race, so for now it's just being tried out in practise.

IMAR something. IMO, the logo is way too small, or are HRT calculating the size of the logo on how much the sponsor brings them? :P

Isn't that how sponsorship works?

And a quick google search I did yesterday turned up several IMARs - an Irish geophysical surveryor, the Institute of Marine Research, the Romanian Institute of Mathematics, a Spanish metals company and a German surveying company. It's probably one of the last two.

I agree that the car looks way better without sponsors. What I mean is that the front wing with the IMAR logo looks quite ugly with the empty white space surrounding it.
