Great bio of Alesi
Great bio of Alesi
I'm a thrilled new member of this highly informative website and new subscriber to the most excellent podcast. Just a great alternative to commuter radio shows while I fight my way home through the traffic here in the capital of the Great White North.
I want to express my appreciation for the Jean Alesi bio on your site. He was, and still remains, my favourite F1 driver. F1 simply hasn't been the same since he retired. I was lucky enough to witness his win at Montreal and in fact just recently discovered a copy of the report I posted after the race, a vintage 1995 webpage complete with almost all the photos taken by my DH (including a Forti!).
You can see it here: http://web.archive.org/web/20010607035714/www.cyberus.ca/~mdowney/montreal.html

Re: Great bio of Alesi
Thanks for your compliments about the website, the podcast and the Alesi article in particular. Of drivers who have been even remotely successful, Alesi is far and away my favourite. Nice article on the 1995 Montreal race and great photos as well. And yes, we particularly appreciate the photos of the Fortis!
Hope you continue to enjoy listening and reading!

Fantastic pictures, thanks!
It's a shame we don't have Montreal to look forward to this year...

Re: Great bio of Alesi
We are thinking of reviving the webpage and rescanning the prints(!) as the archived photos are quite small. I've got reports for '96 and '97 as well. We stopped attending the Montreal GP after '97 because we didn't appreciate the squad of ex-gestapo security guards they started hiring after the track invasion of '95. Really spoiled the ambiance.
I am quite surprised that the Montreal race survived for so long, the facility really is quite substandard and the garages for the teams are very basic. Hopefully some government infrastructure money can be poured into rebuilding it and perhaps paving the walkways so there isn't quite so much sand on the track.
I certainly prefer the venue to Indianapolis however!

Re: Great bio of Alesi
I think Alesi is one of F1's great 'One Hit Wonders' - drivers who won One race, did so with style, but were destined never to win another. There's a tribute to another one (Olivier Panis at Monaco 1996) on this site too. Carlos Pace at Brazil 1975 is an earlier example, or even Peter Gethin at Monza in 1971 - he never led a single complete lap of any Grand Prix but came from 4th to 1st on the last lap as the pack crossed the line in one go!

Re: Great bio of Alesi
This just popped into my head again, I remember seeing this when it happened. It's just so epic.

Another great memory I have of Jean is from Magny-Cours 2000 or 2001, he was first car out in qualifying and during his
out-lap he waved to the fans in the grandstands. When he got back to the pits he was kindly asked by the team (Prost) not to do so again.
I never saw the problem, though.

It was just... Epic! Both the bump and the video which is just brilliant! I thought that only happened in games!

Incredibly the website still works, as do all the picture links at the bottom, except the fuel rig one! Brilliant stuff!
