"AaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!"

Well, not quite, but as I am attempting to track down who our favourite excitable Japanese commentator is, I found this video from 1980-something, of Pierluigi Martini taking Kazuhito Kawai, one of Fuji TV's commentary team, for a spin round Suzuka in a Group C car (no idea what model, mind). The commentator is strangely quiet, and if you watch the video you'll see why - so there's really no reliable indicator of whether or not this man is the purveyor of all our favourite "SIDE-O BY SIDE-O! AAAAAAAHHHH! CRASHUUUUU!" moments. Note also the wacky graphics, and the background music as Kazuhito Kawai waits for his ride... it sounds like it could have come from a Hello Kitty commercial. That's Japan for you...

But I do know someone who's about to go to Japan for a year and is proficient enough in the language that maybe, possibly, we will be able to put a name to the voice who makes Murray Walker sound like he's commentating on a snooker match between Cliff Thorburn and Terry Griffiths, when the frame is 45 minutes into a round of safety shots.

I'm watching it again now, and no sooner has the session started than Jacques Villeneuve has put in a first flying lap at 1'30.505... which would have been enough to get him on the grid in 2011. Jérôme d'Ambrosio's fastest qualifying lap was 1'30.822. His eventual pole time of 1'29.369 would have put him ahead of Timo Glock as well. Something also tells me that had Stefan Grand Prix somehow made it onto the grid this year and had JV been driving for them, his qualifying time would have been slower (probably by quite some way) than his 1997 pole lap. That's 14 years of progress for you...

Of course, the real reason I was watching was to see this. I'm slightly annoyed that there's no Part 5, because there may have been more of this rarest of sights.

I've only gone and found another one...

This is ITV's "World of Sport" Coverage, Dickie Davies to begin with, then TV's Mike Smith of all people on commentary duty.

That is brilliant! I'm amazed at the picture quality and it's great to hear David Purley commentating - did he really, as he claims, lead the 1977 Belgian GP though?!

The lap chart says he never got higher than 3rd on strategy at the end of a lap. That didn't stop him from potentially taking the lead and almost immediately losing it. There is no proof that he did lead the race, but it's plausible.

Formula BMW =/= Indycar

Here's some NASCAR rejectfulness. Listen to the commentary and it says enough. Billy Keyes = LEGEND.

He wrecks on his first lap on the track ... while going VERY slow.

What an arse

That should be placed in the "unpopular opinions" section

Raikkonen was extremely unlucky in 2003 and 2005 (and then got lucky in 2007)

Piquet Sr has been through a lot of crap through his career, also pwned Mansell frequently

Damon Hill didn't get his Williams drive for no reason, he had TALENT

Phil Hill had crappy cars before and after 1961, thus explaining his sudden uprising and sudden downfall

And Stefan Bellof was masked by crappy machinery in the 1985 season. That, and Tyrrell was DSQ'd in 1984, thus erasing Bellof's 8 points he earned that year. Plus, he usually scored very consistently, when he did finish, his career was usually marred by technical failures. (Shoot me if I'm wrong, I saw a lot of DNF's in Bellof's 1984 season)
