Sammy Jones was delighted this evening following the F1RWRS test session at Rockingham where three of his four drivers finished within the top 5 fastest times. Jones himself drove alongside regular teammate Vantini, and junior driver Terry Hawkin who currently competes in the F2RWRS. Jack Christopherson also made an appearance in the car, but with his age and slow times confirming his declining form, it seems unlikely that the team will retain him as a test driver after 2015. Jones however was delighted with his team's performance,

"The boys have done an excellent job today, and myself, Rosco and Terry have set some very competitive times that confirm just how strong we are against our nearest competitors, that is Aeroracing and Kamaha. We are confident that on a good day we can take the fight to MRT and DGN, and push on and challenge for both titles. The season is still only three races old, there's still a long way to go, and I think everyone in the team believes that we have the ability to be the very best in this series."

QUALIFYING

** Sunshine will run in Pre-Q at Round 5

RACE

There isn't a lot to tell in terms of fight for the win. Aeroracing looked like the strongest team this weekend. Pippa Mann took the lead as soon as Martin McFry retired early on Lap 3, from then on, it looked that the win would be for an Aeroracing driver as she was backed up by the best version of The Stig, that was, until Pippa's car expired and Dagnall was able to get rid of Vantini during the first round of stops; Dagnall cleverly chose a 2 stop strategy and when the Jones car got out of the way, he started to put an amazing string of laps to cut the 40 secs gap to the Aeroracing cars. He would have won solely on strategy, but things went even easier for him as The Stig retired when he was about to catch him and from then on the race was done, specially having in count the weak wekend experienced by MRT, saved by a good second half of the race by Rhys Davies in the only moment of the weekend in which he looked like the championship leader, he suffered a brakes problem and even with that was able to drive fast enough to secure 4th place.
Behind the winning driver, a very nice battle slowly developed for 2nd as Bosevic chose a two stop strategy against three by Vantini and de Bock, the croat seems in love with Monaco and raced fantastically this weekend, it's a pity that a rare water leak failure in the Arrowtech left him without 6 well deserved points, which instead went to Thomas de Bock, who demonstrated he's as solid as Gillet drivers use to when they have a capable car and went for everything from the first corner. Vantini wasn't as fast as in other tracks, but he continues his progression and is becoming quickly used to the podium ceremony, without a doubt he's being one of the highlights of the championship. Behind, Barii Mori showed the Kamaha is still fast and a good weapon whenever it holds on until the finish line. Other good races came from Frank Zimmer, Andrea Battani, and Steven Mackintosh, who could finish the first race of the year for the Mecha team. Neuberg and Mignolet weekends also finished too early when they were looking good enough for a couple of points.

On the negative side we have first Aurelien Moll and Sammy Jones, who were way behind their teammates, also Ashley Watkinson and Saeed Al Faisal didn't look too good, while the problems suffered by both Alitalia drivers early in the race meant they only could cruise to the finish. Ben Fleet lost a lot of time to get the rear wing repaired after being hit in the first lap and Koczo suffered an electrical problem which left him at the tail of the group, also very bad weekend for non-qualifier Poppy Whitechapel, who has already departed HRT when this lines are written and finally, the worst weekend came from Sunshine. It's not only that the car isn't fast enough (it looks certainly solid on the hands of James Davies), but Shinobu Katayama weekend was disgustingly bad, she could only qualify 24th, retired with a puncture when she could have reached the pitlane, and then punched her boss after the race, being discarded by her team inmediately afterwards. Everything has gone downhill for her since Sunshine changed management last year and in Monaco the final chapter of her stay at the Japanese team ended bitterly.

Image
ROTR -- Shinobu Katayama; Dismal weekend at her come back showed a distinctive lack of motivation and the atmosphere she's created at Sunshine developed into the sad happenings after the race. She doesn't deserve a place in the sport.
DOTR -- Barii Mori; Started in the midfield and a good strategy and a safe pair of hands made him land the first finish and points for Kamaha this season.

Interestingly, HS was in the top eight 3 out of 4 times, once finishing 9th. I don't think it's that random.

If Alitalia being 1-2 is "random", that's not really true, actually there is very good reason for it - we have a good chassis and a poor engine, so while we're down on power, our car handles great. Which is pretty much essential at Monaco. We suck at high speed tracks but at slow technical circuits we do ok.

Also, when I glanced and saw an Autodynamics car at the foot of the table, my brain facepalmed itself, thinking Fakkinen had messed up again. Did not expect him to be 11 seconds faster than Cannon at all...

Andrea Sassetti wrote:YES GUYS, YES. THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. 1-2 IN PREQUALI. With this much pace for sure we can make the race. Great job everyone.

I suspect the random nature of pre-quali, and the big gaps this time around are due to Aerond running just one 15 minute session, so I'll bet some drivers got traffic or had mechanical problems and were unable to set another realistic time before the session ended. Good to see Mecha qualify though, even if the team boss in a prat! :P

Well, he uses just one session and sometimes in one session cars can run into a GP2 specific problem (which is pretty much unsolvable unless we had 13 teams in prequalifying) so obviously some times are bad. Monaco should be the only track where it happens to this extent, however.

Yeah, I think it's down to traffic and sheer bad luck by those drivers affected. This is the only track in the calendar where traffic should be a big issue. In very long tracks such as Spa or Macau some drivers may not even score a time, however.
