RACE
This is the year F1RWRS finally lost fear to hosting wet races (in the past year a session would be postponed if rain was to appear), and Monaco was the best (or the worst, if one is to ask some drivers) place for the liquid to appear in race conditions. And it did. And it did heavily, in the worst conditions since F1 in 1984. In fact, this race was a master combination of the 1984, 1988 and 1996 F1 Races, combining the best elements from all of them: Sure it was a crash fest, but we saw as well a genius driver dominating and then losing it all because of a stupid mistake (Mark Dagnall), an underdog emerging to take the win where everybody else failed to secure the lead (Sammy Jones), and then two extra heroes in the podium; one charging from the very back of the grid (Nicolas Steele) and the other driving a solid rock race (Moll). We also had the underdog with the conditions to win but ultimately failing to do so due to own mistakes (Mirko Bosevic). All in all, a tremendous race, plenty of action, accidents and the thrill of not knowing what could happen next, who would fail to secure the car at the next corner or who would end up leading the race.
We knew it was going to be good when we saw that pile-up at the nouvelle chicane in the 2nd lap where Schiller and Mann retired, with The Stig lasting only a couple of extra yards before hitting the wall. At that point, Steele became trapped and lost 20 seconds along with a number of drivers. From then on, the race was simply an incredible caroussel of spins and cars going into the barriers. Everybody seemed on danger but Mark Dagnall, who pulled a gap of 2 seconds every lap, driving fearlessly (sometimes carelessly) untill his first major mistake of the season; He didn´t care watching the mirrors as he exited the pits after his stop and didn´t see Jones approaching, getting into the way of the green and white car, who couldn´t avoid hitting the DGN at the back, sending him into the barriers. For that, and for throwing an amazing opportunity to pull 10 extra points when all he had to do was drive 2 seconds slower than everybody else a lap on new tyres to win, he gets our ROTR award. Mirko Bosevic closely got it though. The pole sitter couldn´t keep Dagnall behind for long, but he was happilly pulling a serious gap over Rhys Davies when he spun at Massenet. It almost became a disaster when Dave Simpson also spun trying to avoid the Arrowtech, and then his team-mate Martins did a third spin at the spot when trying to avoid Bosevic car. That almost took both Arrowtech out of the race. It didn´t put an end to Bosevic speed, but he was unable to pass Moll in the second half of the race and his chances ended there.
Once Dagnall retired, chances jumped from one driver to another; first Shinobu Katayama, but the Japanese female retired soon after with the gearbox letting her down. Then Mori, but he went too hard over a kerb and threw away his chance, and by then Bosevic had lost all his chances. All the craziness around was completed when only 5 drivers crossed the finish line and classified. The lowest number ever in a F1RWRS. We loved how the race developed and we´re asking ourselves how it´s taken that much for it to happen. We´ll put our prayers onclouds going wherever F1RWRS is at.
