Driver notable facts: Debuted in ARWS in 2018 despite only half a season in F3RWRS to their name as far as international competition goes, but has been able to score points on occasion. Similar to Akira Yamamura, little is known about their history, though this could be more due to their more relative obscurity as they have not been in the public eye as long as Yamamura has. One of five drivers on the grid with unknown birthplaces, and one of two with unknown birthdates. Finished 4th in Scandinavia for Union Saver Developments in 2019. 3rd in Formula Nippon in 2016-17.

Won the first race for Kahama in over 5 years in Mexico, in 2016. 1 ARWS win, 2 podiums, 1 fastest lap.

Race Replay - featuring commentary from myself, and at various points, Anna/frogfoot9013, Novitopoli, Ataxia, Dom_Wings (via chat), and Klon towards the end. There are a few periods where it goes a bit silent commentary-wise as not much is going on at certain points, but the race certainly spices up towards the end! Thanks to everyone who watched the stream!

Championship standings after 1 race.

The next race will be at Nürburgring - I plan to run the race sometime next weekend, probably after either the F1 qualifying or race.

Drive of the Race: Naoki Shinjo - an incredible performance to pick up positions where others failed, and score a very well-deserved first points-paying podium for himself and Team Mecha in ARWS competition.
Reject of the Race: Tomo Kazama - that podium could well have been hers for the taking, as she was battling Shinjo for position during the race, before spinning at the final corner and getting lost in the gravel for a concerning amount of time, ultimately costing herself and the team valuable championship points.

Race Replay - featuring commentary from myself and Klon, with frogfoot9013 dropping in at the end of the race - it's a chaotic one with plenty of action, so hopefully it should make an enjoyable watch! Thanks to everyone who watched the stream!

Championship standings after 2/13 races.

I'll be running the next race, the German GP at the Norisring, next Saturday, probably around 12:00 BST.

PlanetARWS.com wrote:Couteau incensed by lack of ARWS testing concessions for inline-three engine runners

Jones Couteau Racing chief Jacques Couteau has taken aim at the AutoReject organisers for not offering manufacturers of the inline-three turbocharged powertrains more testing time, following early unreliability from both Ford and Koenigsegg.

The inline-three formula was a late addition to the roster of powertrain suppliers and, although both engines have apparently topped the power charts, a lack of dyno running and track testing is said to have contributed to their current difficulties in remaining reliable.

None of the Ford or Koenigsegg runners have made it to the finish, although a handful of drivers have been classified with late retirements. This leaves the teams operating inline-three engines significantly down in the championship early on, given the revised points system only applies to those who finished the race.

"We are very unhappy with the current situation," said Couteau. "These engines are not ready, but they could have been if AutoReject gave us the concessions to pursue some reliability fixes.

"Unfortunately, they didn't want to. So we are either stuck with an engine that blows up every race, or we are forced into something more drastic. There needs to be change. Monaco is not a circuit that hurts engines so much, but we are suffering with problems regardless.

"We may be okay at the Norisring, but we cannot wait around to make a decision."

Asked if Jones would consider moving away from long-term partners Ford, Couteau did not deny the possibility if the ARWS governance structure did not change its mind on concessions.

"This is not an eventuality we want. We want to stay with Ford and be successful together, and we think this year's engine is very performant when it works. But the conditions currently do not allow this. So we are considering options, and Ford is very understanding."

Re: ARWS 2023 - PRE-SEASON TESTING RESULTS

Post by Salamander »

Speaking in a press conference at ARWS' European headquarters in Cologne, series commissioner Al Smith has offered the following statement regarding the poor reliability for the Koenigsegg & Ford I3 turbos through the first two ARWS Grands Prix of the 2023 season:
Al Smith wrote:First of all, I have to say, we all completely understand Mr. Couteau's complaints - as well those of his fellow team principals. I absolutely agree that a zero-percent finishing rate for all Koenigsegg and Ford powerplants through two Grands Prix is unacceptable. We are currently encouraging the manufacturers and teams to work together closely to find swift solutions to these issues.

That said, I must state that the ARWS' current position is to keep testing and development during the season to a minimum - at least for 2023. Our primary concern with this is to try and keep costs down for all teams - I know from my own previous experience running a racing team, you always have to push the envelope as a team boss. So, keeping that in mind, our primary concern was to ensure that every team on the grid had the best possible opportunity to develop a healthy financial outlook for the future.

Now, obviously, we're in a situation where every team running the I3 powerplants are having to pay for two brand new engines every race weekend, so naturally that has to become our top priority for limiting costs. We've already had some very encouraging discussions between myself, the brilliant Dr.-Ing. Haas, and those in charge of the Ford and Koenigsegg programmes, and I'm quite optimistic that these issues should resolved in short order, without us having to resort to allowing for costly tests and upgrades to these engines. As such, we shall continue to monitor the situation closely, and we are already making preparations to change course if that proves necessary.
(Translation: I've made a slight adjustment to the reliability values for the I3-powered teams, to ensure that we should hopefully have at least have a few of them finish the race next time out.)

Drive of the Race: James Wilmington - A steady, measured drive where the Canadian took care of his equipment and allowed his rivals to fall by the wayside, earning him, Team Bert Anderwald, and Koenigsegg their first-ever ARWS wins.
Reject of the Race: Vaclav Malsyz - A very silly rookie mistake saw the Czech driver Czechmate himself on lap 2 by simply accelerating too soon out of the turn 1 hairpin.
Race Replay - featuring commentary from myself and Klon, with frogfoot9013 again dropping in at the end of the race - I'm a bit sick at the moment so my voice isn't the best at the moment and listening to it back, my mic is set kind of low, but the race was very entertaining so hopefully that more than makes up for it!

This is very reminiscent of Foxdale's debut season, qualifying well and getting fastest laps, but unable to convert into race finishes. However seeing Koenigsegg complete the podium fills the team with hope.

In a memo leaked to J.O.U.R.N.A.L. by one of the ARWS teams, Autoreject International CEO Makoto Hashimoto has informed teams that they are entitled to an additional 700 kilometers of private testing in the period from June 30 to July 10 following murmurs of discontent by Ford and Koenigsegg .

This comes after a recent public statement by series commissioner Al Smith that "resort[ing] to allowing for costly tests" was something the series was looking to avoid. This comes on the heels of a rule change regarding certain materials used by Mugen in the production of engines for Holiday and Mecha.
(Translation: we are still not quite satisfied with the balancing of the three engine types. I am sorry for the inconvenience, I am afraid 2023 ARWS will be as much of a learning experience for me as it will be for you. Please note that unlike old ARWS, testing is not a gameplay mechanic. You are free to imagine the sessions of your team and report on them, but it won't have any effect)
Bentley Team Kahama wrote:Koyomi Setou Quickest at Barcelona Test Despite Issues, Pierre St. Laurent Completes 80 Laps

On July 6, our team and fellow Bentley-powered O² Czechmate Motorsport used the testing allocation at the renowned Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Regular driver Pierre St. Laurent was joined by fellow Best In The World drivers Asim Adhikari, Koyomi Setou and Laurindo Coelho who each had two hours in control of the other Bentley Antares.

Pierre St. Laurent's day was a full success, completing 80 laps of the 4.675-km long circuit with a fastest time of 1:24.208. "For our side of the garage this was a very fruitful day and we got valuable data for the boys back home to work with," said Pierre after testing, "I feel more confident in the car with every day."

The other car had to deal with many technical issues which particularly cost Asim valuable time. "I am a bit disappointed," he said, "but it still feels great to get this chance to run an ARWS car." Koyomi only managed 13 laps, but was the quickest of the Kahama cars with a 1:24.060. By the time of Laurindo's stint, the issues were fully sorted and he got to do 32 laps.

Drive of the race: Martin McFry - A superb drive, 10 years in the making for McFry who finally takes his long-awaited first ARWS win, and the first for his team in 11 years - despite an ill-fitted wheel on his first pitstop, McFry refused to give in and silenced any doubters with his greatest drive in an ARWS race to date.
Reject of the race: Jones Couteau Racing - Despite the testing allowances, technical gremlins continue to plague Jones - Torrente's transmission failed in a disappointing race for the Spaniard, while a puncture on Cameron's car wound up damaging the suspension enough that it forced the Brit to retire within sight of the pitlane.

Race Replay - featuring commentary from myself and Klon - a very uncertain race with a lot of twists and turns, I hope you enjoy it!

Championship standings after 4/13 races.

Foxdale Press Release

This year has been reminiscent of our debut season in 2013, with a win-or-bust attitude, which has paid off for this race. And we are glad that McFry finally got the win he has been fighting for for so many years. Commiserations to Voekler though, we will give him every opportunity to also get his day in the sun.

Note: Carmen Álvarez Torrente, Kenan Ardaoglu, and Jesus Castell all retired from the race, but remained classified finishers. Additionally, incidents involving cars 12 (James Wilmington) & 26 (Kenan Ardaoglu), and cars 16 (Emma Kickert) & 19 (Humbert Moyenmoutier) are under investigation by the stewards.

Drive of the race: Martin McFry - dodged two crashes en route to a second successive victory, seeing him establish himself as a bona-fide championship contender
Reject of the race: James Wilmington - accelerated and rammed into an ailing Kenan Ardaoglu who was just trying to retire his car, triggering the second crash which almost cost McFry the victory.

Race Replay - featuring commentary from myself, Klon, DigitDan, as well as Dom_Wings in chat - bit of a short race as you might expect, but a lot happened, and was a bit too much to keep up with at times! Hopefully it's still a good watch, though. :)

Championship standings after 5/13 races.
